Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia announced today that it will release a new 500 GB PS3 model with the product code CECH-3400C in Japan.

The launch will happen on August 28th, and the new model will cost 25,980 yen ($253) plus taxes, 2,572 yen (almost 26 bucks) less than its predecessor.

Together with the new launch, the previous models CECH-4200C (500 GB) and CECH-4200B (250 GB) will be discontinued, meaning that the 250 GB version will not be offered anymore.

The differences with the 4200 models have not been disclosed by Sony, so they’re probably negligible, besides the change in wi-fi component that was outed by the recent FCC certification, which means that a future launch in the West is most probable.

A new CUH-11XX PS4 model has also been certified by the FCC at the same time, and with the new PS3 officially outed, we might hear about it soon.

Hopefully this means the same goes for the west aswell seing how many buy those consoles outside of Japan

@Netret0120:

I purchased a PS3 slim 160gb(gaming) and the original and almighty PS3 phat 60gb(display) BTW I named it Mrs.Smith because it's so shiny like Angelina Jolie's dominatrix outfit in the movie so awesome!) ... for my kids to play.(crosses-fingers) But mind you, my phat PS2 still works but I don't know about my PS1 phat. Last time I played Soul Reaver, ants scampered out of the vents when the console got hot.lulz

My question is, why aren't almost 10y old systems (that goes to 360 and ps3) aren't sold for like $99 or less? what kind of piece of tech, almost a decade old cost $250+? This is insane ripoff if you ask me.

I said that a few years ago to many SW trolling jeers. It's even more true today, especially when you consider the 360 is a DVD playing, 2005 launched machine. The PS3 should be slightly more expensive than the 360 due to the Blu-Ray drive/ internal batteries in the controllers, and somehow both machines are in the same price range.

Yes, they both should be cheaper.

That's the market for ya.

lol I remember a common used sheen tactic from last generation.

Sheens: bububbubububububbubu lowering price means they are in trouble and the system isn't selling well.
Sheens: bubububbubububbubububub offering free games, free tvs...etc is a sign of a system not selling well.

I guess this a conscious effort to undermine Xbone launch there.

I say MS and Sony both need to focus on keeping the Xbox 360 and PS3 selling long past the release of the X1 and PS4.

Making the hardware cheaper and cheaper probably helps, but I think making games cheap and available would do more.

I think they need to make all the old games a year or older $10 on XBL Marketplace and PSN Store, at that price I think people would just start compulsively buying them, as well as build stronger consumer confidence in a digital marketplace, which I'm sure both MS and Sony wish to support to a greater degree on the X1 and PS4.
