Has anyone heard about it? You get $100 off a ps3 when you trade in your ps2 with 3 games.

Gamestop is hilarious, I remember someone here posted an ad that if you traded in your used DS and like 50$ and a game or something, you'd get a new DS. It made no sense what so ever, and was the biggest rip off I ever saw, but i'm sure people fell for it.
#7 Posted by majadamus (10238 posts) -
That's a rip off. If gonna take the offer, make sure you trade in 3 games that are really bad or are worth almost nothing.

Actually they aren't. It's a PS2 with 2 games.

It's a bad trade simply because the PS3's available at retail now have no BC. If you are upgrading to a PS3 you might as well keep your old PS2.

#10 Posted by yoshi_64 (25261 posts) -
Considering the fact that all PS3s out now on retailers don't have BC, you might as well give them all your games. Like Heretrix said. I mean, what's the point in trading in some PS2 games and a PS2 for a PS3 that won't play your games? People should be smart I hope...
#11 Posted by Bigboi500 (29912 posts) -

With no BC that's a terrible deal. There are still more games for PS2 out that I want to play compared to PS3 games.

PS2 games I still want to play:

Rogue Galaxy

Tales of the Abyss

Odin Sphere

Artonellica 1 & 2

Eternal Poison

Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2

Devil Summoner 1 & 2

Persona 5

Yakuza 2

Dawn of Mana

Radiata Stories

Grim Grimoire

Atelier Iris

Growlancer Generations

Suikoden Tactics, 3, 4, 5

Valkerie Profile

PS3 games I want to play:

Disgaea 3

Valkyria Chronicles

White Knight Chronicles

Little Big Planet

Cross Edge

Atelier Rorona

Yakuza 3

Yea true, I wonder if they have a list of games they will accept because I'm sure someone will trust trade-in their crap PS2 games with their PS2 for the discount.
#13 Posted by 2_Quiet_2_Riot (717 posts) -

Absolute Rip Off.

Without a B/C feature in almost every newer PS3's (unless you're buying an older PS3), there's absolutely no way of playing PS2 games. Which is exactly why I still have my PS2 Slim next to my PS3.

#14 Posted by siLVURcross (26106 posts) -
Doesn't make sense. But that doesn't stop people.
#15 Posted by iam2green (13991 posts) -
it seems like a alright trade. i don't have money for that so i won't use it. 3 ps2 games that are more then $2.00 and a ps2. it would be good for people who have a ps2 laying around.
#16 Posted by MoonMarvel (8249 posts) -
I heard there was a download to make your PS3 play PS2 games, not sure how well it works. I am sure Sony knows about it, not sure if they are behind it.

I know! That's the greatest deal I ever heard at Gamestop! What is he thinking?

Edit. Oh 3 games huh? Well that's the normal Gamestop I know and love.

#19 Posted by Gxgear (10425 posts) -

This is a terrible deal that at first might look good.

Current PS3 models dont have backward compatibility.

PS2 is worth 100 dollars alone, throw in the 3 games that Gamestop will actually take (which means they're probably good titles worth at least 30-40 dollars in value as new), you're looking at $200+ worth of your stuff to get a measly $100 off a PS3.

#20 Posted by jonnyt61 (2147 posts) -
I suppose it's a good deal for people who have multiple PS2's and some trash games.
#21 Posted by hat123456 (1272 posts) -

I was actually thinking of getting this deal as I mostly never touch my ps2 since I have a 360 and a wii, so am stillnot surethough

Thats how I got my PS3 in 2007, I traded my 360 and PS2, paid $160 for the 80gb Motorstorm PS3......to me it was worth it.

#23 Posted by mariokart64fan (19495 posts) -

unless you spend 1000 on a used 60 gig or find an old 80 gig laying aaround this deal is a rip

100 for ps2 , is a good deal but with 2 games i dont think so ,

your getting 70 for the ps2 and 10-20 for the games,

so ya rip off,

because newer ps3 dont play ps2

do the math , youll end up rebuying ps2 , lol

#24 Posted by Verge_6 (20282 posts) -

Since Sony (in one of the stupidest moves seen this generation so far) eliminated BC from the PS3, this is a ripoff.

#25 Posted by OreoMilkshake (12825 posts) -
Is the 80 gig backwards compatible? Probably not, of course.

Only first generation 60gigs. If you find on of those for $400, jump for it.

#30 Posted by NYrockinlegend (2024 posts) -
If you have a back-up PS2, it's an okay trade, but trade in games that mean nothing to you because those 2 or 3 games is where the value is ripped-off(it's more than a $100 value).

[QUOTE="Michael324"]Has anyone heard about it? You get $100 off a ps3 when you trade in your ps2 with 3 games.

they will end up selling your ps2 and 3 games for about 100 so they don't mind. not really much of a deal.

They had this deal back around the time of the PS3's release.Well not exactly. It was the PS2, memory card, and two controllers.

At the time PS3s were BC so I took it. I'm so glad I got a PS3 early on. I couldn't live without BC

That was actually a pretty good deal, considering the BC. But if that element is not in the equation, then no gamer worth his salt should even consider it.

That's actually pretty good. You gotta love Gamestop though. I bet that they do this because they've got PS3s just sitting while the PS2 had a major boost in sales when the price dropped. They probably crunched some numbers and figured that this would boost the # of used PS2s they own (and can sell) and convert people to buying more PS3 and PS3 games, which may be more profitable than the end result of a Sony PS2 price drop and then still lowballing on what they'll buy a PS2 back for. The nerd in me wants to run to Excel and see if I can make this work on a spreadsheet.

Yes. It's as simple as that. It would be one hell of a deal if the PS3 could play PS2 games.

#38 Posted by xscott1018 (1266 posts) -
it's not a bad deal if u have a ps2 laying around. i have one i think it is a bit of a rip off. i havn't touched my ps2 in years. i have a 360 and PC that i play on all the time.
#39 Posted by foxhound_fox (88337 posts) -

I wonder if they would take my old DRE'd fatty PS2? I can't part with my slim because it allows me to play imports... but even then the PS3 doesn't offer full BC, so it wouldn't be worth it at all.

#40 Posted by hat123456 (1272 posts) -

man am still debating this deal

I believe Sony could do this if they wanted to (but they havent). However, it is next to impossible for homebrewed PS2 emulation on a PS3.

I hope someday Sony releases PS2 games on PSN :)

#42 Posted by iowastate (7873 posts) -

it depends on whether or not you need the money off the price in order to get a PS3 and if you are going to still be playing PS2 games.

I have both of them but it took me awhile to save up enough for a PS3 and i would have been tempted because my 6 year old PS2 is no longer worth much at all.

BC was removed to lower the price and make the console more stable and less costly. if you pay attention you will notice that the small percentage problems there are have been the PS3 are happening almost completely with the early models, the ones that HAD that ps2 backward compatibility.

#43 Posted by -ArchAngeL-777- (3786 posts) -
BC hasnt meant squat since the fall of the first year for the PS3. Seriously, no one is going to regularly play PS2 games over Uncharted, MGS4, Killzone, etc. In the early part of the first year of PS3, I played PS2 games a lot. I have maybe played a total of 20 hours of PS2 games since and that was mostly to play the first Ratchet and Clank. If you can get $100 for a PS2, then its most definitely worth it.

Correction; YOU aren't going to play any PS2 games over PS3 games.

The PS2 outsold the PS3 in the month US for the month of April. If you saw a ratio of PS2 sales vs PS3 or 360 sales for every region, I think you'd see that there are a HUGE number of people that would still rather play a PS2 than a PS3/360.
#46 Posted by subrosian (14215 posts) -
Three problems: 1. They can't be any PS2 games, they have to be worth a minimum amount. Considering that GameStop has under $1 in trade-in value for 99% of the PS2's library, that puts you in a bad situation. Trade in FF XII, God of War, or SOCOM? Really? - 2. The PS3 doesn't have BC - so what, you're not going to play your PS2 games again, ever? - 3. There's a PS3 price-cut or redesign coming within the next twelve months, AND Sony currently offers $100 off via the Sony Sty1e credit-card deal. - And just as a last stab, you can get PS3's from Dell for $340 ~ $350 *without* having to trade in your PS2 or games library.
