Granted, it doesn't have a ton of them, BUT, the Vita is perfect for visual novels. The system is very comfortable to hold and the touch screen works perfect. Danganronpa & Danganronpa 2 are great examples of how awesome the Vita can be for these types of games. With the upcoming Steins;Gate - Vita version will be the definitive experiene And you bet your butt Zero Escape 3 will be best played on Vita. As for other visual novels you can play, there's Walking Dead, Virtue's Last Reward. and I think eventually - Tales from the Borderlands. There's no denying that the Vita is becoming home to the visual novel. Can I get a hell yea, SW?

Walking Dead and Tales are visual novels? I'd say that goes to 3DS or DS by A LOT.

Better and more visual novels and better suited for them. The one thing a stylus is good for. I'd argue that ZE is better on 3DS because of that.

Hotel Dusk on DS is by far my favorite visual novel.

It is quite interesting that most visual novels released on the PS Vita do not get released outside of Japan. Not only that, but they tend to sell not that many copies which explains the wide use of special editions.

@onesiphorus: It happens with both 3DS and Vita. Even with DS. Since they tend to sell less outside of Japan. Strangely enough if I remember correctly Zero Escape has actually sold better in the west than Japan.

Was the 360 considered the RTS "king" with its 6 games designed for real time strategy?

That's like the pettiest victory you could achieve.

Even less so for vita with visual novels.

Being king of a genre that is light on gameplay and interactivity in a medium where the defining trait is said gameplay and interactivity isn't anything to boast.

The Danganronpa games are nowhere near as good as the Phoenix Wright games, and Virtue's Last Reward doesn't make a huge amount of sense unless you played the Nintendo exclusive 999.

So I don't know. If we include stuff like Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright and Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies, I'd say that the 3DS has the edge here.

@Planeforger: You can get the story for 999 on iOS, as well (it is missing puzzles, so it is literally a visual novel on iOS). You can also play most of the Phoenix Wright games on iOS (except for Apollo Justice and Layton vs Wright). Dual Destinies in particular looks fantastic in high resolution.

Overall, I'm not sure either handheld is really king of visual novels since so few visual novels make it west in the first place. That said, I can think of 3 good visual novels on 3DS (VLR, Ace Attorney DD, and Layton vs AA) and 4 on Vita (VLR, Danganronpa 1, 2, Steins;Gate). Dai Gyakuten Saiban might be good, but who knows if it'll ever come west.

@SakusEnvoy: Nope, we've had his discussion before. The iOS version of 999 is so terribly gimped that it actively sabotages its own story. It's not just the puzzles that are missing, entire scenes are gone, and the big reveal of the story is so intrinsically tied to the DS hardware that on iOS it becomes meaningless.

@charizard1605: I know you have strong feelings about the iOS version. ^^° I can say from my personal experience of playing both, that I never would have even seen all the endings were it not for the iOS version. If the goal is to catch up on the story, that was pretty much the entire purpose of releasing the game as a digital novel with flowchart. I did not personally find the story meaningless on iOS. I won't deny the flaws you mentioned, nor claim that it's the equal of the DS version. My main goal is just clarifying the facts and options available.

I would argue that stuff is completely worth the sacrifice. Those puzzles are not great, and having to replay them every time you get an ending is some of the worst design I've ever seen in a VN. It doesn't help that skipping through dialogue is insanely slow for no good reason.

Is the twist ending hurt because it's not on the DS? I guess, but the impact of the story would still be there. I think you're overhyping the hardware twist in 999, it's not THAT good.

I really do think that better pacing and visuals is much better then the benefits of the DS version. The ending probably would have had a much greater impact for me if I didn't have to wad through the stupid bs in the DS version. I was pissed when I got one bad ending three times. I had to look up an internet walkthrough just to make sure I didn't get another bad end. It completely took me out of the experience, wasn't worth it.

Correct answer is PC. I prefer the Vita as a means to play visual novels, but there's just more of them on the PC.

The Vita is an arguable second place though.

This. PC is the visual novel king, and then Vita.

@Ant_17: When it comes to jrpg's, the ps3 wins. Sure, the vita has P4: Golden, Nintendo has gems like Devil Survivor, Strange Journey, Rune factory (wait, does that count?), but on the ps3 you can play the Atelier games, Persona 2+3+4, Nocturne, many Tales of games, Resonance of Fate, Xenogears, Suikoden and I guess Hyperdimension Neptunia for those that are into that stuff.

As for Visual novels, I dunno. With Pc you can play Steins Gate, Umineko, Subarashiki Hibi, Muv luv Alternative, emulate 999, Danganronpa AND Ace Attorney, so yeah.

Pc basically doesn't have the best omes when it comes to which platform VNs were released for, but emulators work like a charm.

As for AA vs Danganronpa, I prefer the former too (some installations of it are actually among my fav games ever), but I wouldn't pit Danganronpa far behind it.

So much unwarranted hatred for the Vita, i might just have to remind everyone that the PS4 is approximately ten million units ahead of the Xbox One. But back on topic, i'd say the Vita is good for its vast array of exclusives, Gravity Daze always comes to mind. It maybe just isn't the king of any specific genre but is competent in many.

hashtag PS4 top selling dominant platform hashtag the vita is also a playstation system
