Poll Project Morpheus v. Oculus Rift - who will dominate gaming? (36 votes)

Project Morpheus 19%
Oculus Rift 75%

Granted, I don't know that much about either. But I am intrigued more by Project Morpheus because it's a Sony product. They've been in the gaming hardware biz for a long time and are by far the most successful in that category. Also, with PS4 just dominating right now and for the foreseeable future these two should complement each other really well. But what does SW think? Who will win?

I don't think either will "dominate gaming".

Morpheus doesn't stand a chance. It's a half-assed attempt at VR on a machine that is far too weak. It's going to be a failure in the long run.

Oculus isn't screwing around. Not only do they now have all of the leaders of the VR industry working for them, Facebook's acquisition has allowed them to build the entire device out of proprietary tech that is tailored specifically for VR. No more scraps from the smartphone industry. Also the available SDK is already being integrated into dozens of games and even allows users to custom tune unsupported Rift games to output correctly for Rift.

It's not even a competition. Short term Morpheus will see limited success mainly because Oculus Rift is targeting the high end gamers as they don't want to compromise on the VR experience while anybody with a PS4 will be able to use Morpheus with the limited selection of games on the PS4 that will support it. Sadly though not many will as VR is incredibly demanding and the PS4 just doesn't have the hardware. Expect only a handful of games, mostly smaller titles with much lower quality graphics to support it. Over time more and more people will have the PCs that can run Rift games and the Rift's software library will be much larger and will continue to grow. We'll also see Rift, given the fact it's not tied to a PS4, in a lot of non-gaming applications as well as a lot of tourism and entertainment industry events.

Long term Oculus Rift will be the leader of the VR industry.

Neither will dominate gaming per say, but considering the power of the PS4, Oculus by far.

Where's the option for neither? VR may start with the "wow" factor as something new and interesting, but like any other gimmick that relies on cumbersome peripherals, that novelty eventually wears off.

Project Morpheus is on a Closed Platform and has no User Input what so ever.

Oculus Rift can be bought by anyone and is for the most Open Platform in the Gaming World (PC) and has backing of one of the biggest companies on the planet next to google (facebook)

face it, Project Morpheus is nothing, but a "Me too" project and will never be as big as Oculus.

Morpheus will likely work on PC too, but Oculus will be the only way to go I recon.

Neither - and certainly not Morpheus. Certain games might have hardcore following for Rift but I don't ever see VR coming anywhere near Wii's popularity or even Kinect's.

There are many, many, many more PC users than PS4 users though. Even if we assume half of the gamers on PC don't even have a dedicated GPU.

Oculus Rift . Morpheus will be just another over hyped gimmick from Sony . I also don't expect it to be big hit on PS4 . Even 1080p feels blurry when VR is in action . These hardwares are designed for 4K gaming and more than 60fps . Even on PC it'll be ages until VR is perfected .

All I know is I'm dropping a hefty dime on Facebook Rift when Star Citizen is finally completed and released in 2016.

Morpheus....eh. Sony really hasn't any games that have been shown to gain my interest. Alien: isolation would've been one, but they passed that up.

Pity. I'd probably have bought it just for that.

The one with the least amount of trickery and company inflicted limitations and restrictions. I have a feeling that the Oculus Rift will be the more open system of the two.

Neither, VI will be like motion controls, a gimmick that people will go crazy over then the novelty will wear off.

While the Oculus Rift is one ugly piece of hardware, this area cater more to the pc than consoles. Still not sure if it will catch on, though. Then again I have not experienced it myself.

It might be a fad, but I think it can exist long-term as a niche subset of gaming. Besides, VR possibilities for cybersex will keep Rift on the market even if gamers reject it. :P

Ehhhh, I highly doubt it. To me, everything about the VR movement, including the arguments made by its proponents, harken to the '3D revolution' that never came. It was a fad that faded away, and I think that's what VR will be.

Speaking of VR cybersex, remember the arguments for 3D porn? :p

The Rift will be out first. It will feature better technology. It's the only one on an open platform - and that's the going to be the lifeblood of VR for a long time.

I think in 5 years we'll be tlaking about the latest Rift game, and no one will care about morpheus.

All I have to say is I hope Project Morpheus gets cancelled or doesn't take too big of a hunk out of Sony's ass.

Well what chance does Morpheus stand on System Wars? Hermits, Lems, Sheep, and the rest will automatically vote for Oculus out of impulse any way.

That said, I do think Oculus will do better though.

So which are you then? Lem, hermit or sheep?

:p

Another thing:

Sony isn't in the best financial shape, while Oculus Rift is backed by a company with more money than god.

To be frank, given the media attention around the facebook buyout has put the Rift on the mainstage.

Anyways Rift all the way!
