Would honestly be more interested if I was a PC gamer, the potential drawbacks it has and general restrictions being in a closed system brings doesn't make it too appealing.
Hopefully it doesn't become a gimmick, because I'm still down for it being implemented well in games.
"They can render games at 120 frames-per-second, which is ideal for VR, according to Yoshida.
The PlayStation 4 has actually been designed to support 120 frames-per-second, which is a detail they haven't discussed until today. There is also a software function that allows games that run at 60 fps to output at 120 fps. We'll be able to try demos using this technology today."
I am sure the actual headset will be pretty good, but the PS4 just doesn't have the necessary power needed to deliver a proper VR experience. The VR game graphics will be scaled back for sure.
I think Sony's best bet of making this work ( short of making the VR's equivalent of Minecraft) is to make it PC compatible. That coupled with their current indie policy would allow for a large selection of games for the device.
As for the device itself, it seems pretty cool. OLED is awesome.
VR on a closed source system is idiotic, it means you're forced into whatever they create and have no access to custom or open source content. These types of things are meant for the PC platform, also the development time frame on this device is not a confidence booster. The Rift for example has been in development for five years and it's still not ready, it's also being funded by a massive company and spearheaded by the best people in the industry.
The Morpheus will be ready in 2016? I don't trust that, it's probably going to be junk with terrible latency and lack of support...
Good luck getting games to 1080p120 lol, PS4 can barely do 30fps, outside of crappy indie tech demos, I don't see much support in the future for this.
Sony is just dumb, getting into VR right now, should have waited for PS5. Not to mention, not even 1440p is good enough for VR
Quick to belittle something you have no idea about and have never tried, very sad.
Personally im quietly optimistic for this with the rumored Project Cars compatability but i'll hold off making a definitive judgement until ive actually had a chance to try it.
Interesting that they have bumped up the specs. I'm intrigued to see how expensive this will end up being though and how it hopes to penetrate the market.
Nice that they've kept improving the base hardware over the last year. Looking forward to this. Don't worry, lems, I'm sure MS will have their AR knock-off ready in 2017.
Very interested in VR but I don't see the point on PS4. It doesn't have the power to run it properly on games with demanding graphics. Should have left it for next gen maybe. I'll be going down the PC route with this when it all kicks off.
A lot of people are saying PS4 doesn't have the power to drive VR experiences. If the Galaxy Note 4, with its sub-PS3 GPU, can render 1440p VR experiences, I'm pretty sure the PS4 will be able to pull off some decent 1080p ones. It won't all be high powered exclusives in VR. It will be ports of less demanding games and content made specifically by developers for Morpheus.
It's a really nice sounding device with maybe too low of a PPI for real good VR. The real issue with Morpheus is the fact that the PS4 is just not going to be powerful enough to handle doing 120 hz at 1080p in most games.
It sounds like the PS4's API allows for interpolation to boost 60 fps to 120 fps. However interpolation means lower image quality. Pair that with a lower PPI and the overall image quality is going to suffer pretty badly for VR.

Yup, you nailed it. Unfortunately it was reported yesterday by 2 different pieces I read as being locked into the PS ecosystem only. Neither actually provided a quote or slide to confirm it, but it was enough to get me believing that it's likely true (honestly, it was always probable.)
By all accounts, Sony has an excellent piece of hardware with the Morpheus. But unless you're planning on purchasing multiple VR headsets I can't see purchasing one in the next few years. Early VR content is going to be somewhat sparse without the modding community on PC retrofitting VR into existing games.
When Morpheus was revealed last year, the ease of porting Oculus games to it was mentioned repeatedly. The SDKs sounded largely compatible. It's still possible the hacker community will get Morpheus up & running on PC with minimal effort and maximum compatibility, but Sony would do SO much better just allowing the device to be cross platform during these early stages. That concession could make Morpheus the best option for the early VR consumer, instead of the most limited.
I'll jump on the VR bandwagon once it becomes as good as it is in the anime Sword Art Online. But VR problaby won't as advanced as it is in SAO for at least another 50+ years. So by 2065 VR should be spectacular.

GrenadeLeper with mad cow disease thinking they improved the hardware. last year it was 1440P. Now it's 1080P. Now lets divide that 1080P into two screens and it's 960x1080. The same pixel density of...hmmmmmm....ITS 720P.
HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH! They made a worse Oculus clone just like Sony always makes worse clones of Nintendo products. Typical Sony
And MisterYoshidaMedia is now saying there's a special software technique to help them with framerates. Oh wait they are duplicating, it's interpolation. So motion sickness and artifacts will come as standard with the screen door effect that Oculus dismissed as not good enough back in 2013
And on top of that, developers on Reddit's VR pages say they hate it and Sony's blowing smoke up people's ass
VR's future is on the PC, and so is AR's future. There is no future for the POS4
Into the shitbin you go, consoles. PC rules this generation.
@Zethrickk382: no we won't see. The ps4 cannot do AAA titles at 120fps. It just can't. This is just Sony getting full of themselves again. They made another ps2, I expect next gen we will have another PS3 debacle on our hands.
I wouldn't be rushing out to buy this thing. 120P LMAO!! I'll believe it when I see it. Unless you're playing Tetris or Solitaire, I don't see that happening. We'll see though.
Agreed, it's far too easy to be cynical about VR as a gimmick, but from people who have "actually used it" it's incredibly engrossing and thanks to the Morpheous having move capabilities it's even more so. "Again, as told from people who've used it"
Is Sony really trying to push this as a consumer product? And is that the PlayStation Kinect camera in the pictures? I don't know, their fans seems to hate gimmicks that include cameras so I wouldn't be surprise if this bombs on a consumer level. Tech wise it may be cool but there's been some cool Sony tech that didn't really catch on and Sony decided to discontinue them.
