When it comes to the competition, it’s always nice to hear good words. That’s exactly what Microsoft’s Phil Spencer has done, stating he believes that Nintendo’s first party IP catalogue is amazing. Spencer also had nice words for Sony, admitting the company has done a nice job with the direction of the PlayStation 4. Here’s what Microsoft Studios VP had to say about Nintendo:“Nintendo, I think – and there’s some argument about this – that their first-party is such an amazing asset. Their first party studios and IP can lead what they do as a company and the platforms are almost in service to the IP – not in a bad way. They have such iconic stories and this will seem somewhat random, but when we go back and do something like Killer Instinct, a little bit of the history of your franchise can actually be important part of people feeling connected. Obviously the history of Killer Instinct isn’t a history on Xbox, but it’s Rare’s history and I think the reaction when we announced it on-stage at E3 showed that playing to the people’s heart, I think Nintendo does that as well as anybody in terms of hitting the franchises and having huge success with them.”Of course, the Killer Instinct tie in comes from the original release of Killer Instinct on the Super Nintendo, back when Rareware was a second-party developer for Nintendo before Microsoft bought them out. It’s nice to see Spencer acknowledge that Nintendo has some of the best IPs in the gaming industry, though.

Having the legacy behind it is a great asset, and it is good to hear Spencer take note of it. Too much nostalgia can do more harm than good, like with Nintendo for some people, but when you do it right no one can really complain. And Killer Instinct seems to be a perfect example of this.

I seriously think most praise for Nintendo 1st party has more to do with nostalgia than anything. I played and almost beat completely SMG1 and yes, it was a good game and very fun but never deserving of the vast amount of praise it got imo. a 96 on meta... really? Sure it had its charm but it holds itself with some very basic mechanics and its hardly above an 8 game for me. Never played Zelda, I admit but from the footage I see, it hardly stands out as something amazing, at least the more recent games. Played some smash for the wii, not enough to make a valid opinion about it but I dont think I was having any fun with it... lets see what I played also from Nintendo... Played some metroid (dont remember wich one) and that was somewhat fun aswell, but did nothing that stand out. Nintendo games are severely overrated imho

@Vatusus: so what I got from reading your post is, "I haven't actually played Nintendo games with Mario on the cover. but since they are so popular, I think they are overrated".

That's like me saying TLOU of overrated. Bunch of nostalgic Uncharted fanboys buying into Naughty Dogs 4th cinematic movie game, when I haven't even played it.

Hum, what part of "I almost beat SMG1" didnt you understand? How did you translate that to "I havent played Nintendo games with Mario on the cover"? You lack reading comprehension skills bra

And I admit I havent played many Nintendo games, but I have a few (maybe not for extended periods, outside of SMG) but still enough to form some kind of opinion based in what I played. I found them nothing special. Its my opinion, deal with it

And TLOU may be overrated idk, havent played it yet, but you cant say it was claimed because of nostalgia when its a new IP and plays nothing like Uncharted, based in what I read in reviews. What kind of stupid logic was that?

No doubt.

When it comes to gameplay, level design, and challenge, Nintendo really has no competition in the 1st party arena.
