The "cancellation" of Deus Ex was really disappointing to me. I finished that game with a warm heart. Felt like the game trusted me as a gamer to be given a mature story with mature themes. All the preorder and microtransactions thing didn't help but I honesty finished the game without ever feeling like I wasn't playing a full game. Also felt that the game had little filler. Story was short but focused and all side quest relevant to the world... It sure beats climbing pointless walls endlessly in a plot that makes no sense. (cof cof U4).

It was interesting to hear your opinions on Western vs. Eastern titles.

I'm a little torn down the middle. The majority of the games I have been enjoying have come from Eastern developers or Western independent studios but there are exceptions. Two of the biggest stand out games for me last year were Dishonored 2 and Overwatch. Dishonored 2 may adopt the same approach to game design as Harvey Smith-style games of the early 2000's but Overwatch is definitely a modern Western game who's point of focus is online multi-player. Both games, contrary to @charizard1605's point are games driven by mechanics and level design.

Saying that, I do see his point that Western titles have adopted context over substance in some areas. This isn't a bad thing, like Char mentioned, it's just a preference to other types of games. It isn't just narrative driven games that are dominant in Western games but also content abundance. Rather than having a fleshed out set of mechanics such as Souls, Bayonetta, Super Mario - we get open world titles with very shallow mechanics and a simplified game loop repeated over and over across a large map, putting the attention on discovering new content over mastering mechanics.

I miss AA games too. :(
