every build i've done since forever has excluded a blu ray drive. yeah i've seen blu rays, but i just don't need them. 1080p streaming is ... where it's at.

plus, isn't disc swapping kind of last gen? these days you want to browse through digitally, and consume the content right away, the next gen way.

so, if you build a pc without blu ray - can you still get a next gen experience? my answer is - yes!

in fact, i think its viable to build a gaming pc without an optical drive at all. i wonder - is such a pc even more hardcore?

"How do you install Windows?" - some n00b.

"bootable usb" - CrownKingArthur, pro.

Cool story bro.

Both my desktop and laptop have Blu Ray drives in. I'm a film collector y'see.

Even if I wasn't though, I don't think I would want a pc without an optical drive. Not yet.

You don't even need a CD drive for your PCs anymore.

Save that space for another Tera!

I don't bother with Blu Ray on my PC's either. I do keep a drive in there but it's main use is older games I still have on disk and burning CD's. I do still pick up a retail game on occasion, if I find a good deal, but as it just gets installed it doesn't matter if it's on a couple of disks.

My laptop came with a BluRay read & write. Talk about unnecessary. I haven't had a single chance to use it yet.

Honestly cannot remember the last time I used a disc drive on my PC lol. In fact I don't think I'll even get one on my next build.

I have a BluRay disc drive in my PC, which is my first rig, that I built in 2010. Though it's not necessary for gaming, it's great for movies; streamed 1080P videos do not look as good as 1080P videos on BluRay because they're compressed.

I'm OK with just a DVD drive. I've only opened it twice. The first time was to install Windows and the second was to install Motherboard drivers.

I have enough blu-ray players in my home. My rig doesn't even have an optical drive let alone a blu-ray player. It just isn't needed. I have one external optical drive if I ever need to install something and even then i've only used it once and that was to install windows. So yeah blu-ray isn't needed. But they are cheap now a days so if you want you can always throw one in your build. Me I chose to skip the optical drive and get more memory.

You shouldn't install drivers straight from a DVD. You're much better off going to your motherboard manufactures website and downloading the latest drivers from there.

Did you try to be clever? you can't "legally" borrow or trade PC games for the last 10+ years. I suppose you can give them your cd keys ect.

point still stands consolite, all my games come at a click of a button.

I have two disc drives: a CD/DVD player/burner and a Blu-Ray player/burner, as well as an Aerotech front panel fan controller (it's badass). If I was gonna make a new build though, I'd just keep the fan controller.

I like physical media, even for my PC. Also as games get bigger my data cap comes into play, not to mention duration of downloads.

Hell in some cases a trip to Gamestop, or UPS delivering a title is faster than it coming over the line.

blu ray is useless for gaming but i will probably put one in my next build anyway.

they are cheap and i will probably have it hooked up to my tv so may use it to watch a movie every once in awhile.

I like Blu-Rays for movies.

For games, they are simply a delivery method. Even the Next-Gen consoles will eventually be 100% HDD installs anyway; the Blu-Ray games install faster than Digital Delivery and don't require an online connection to install. That's about all the benefit there is to it.

But I agree - if you don't already have a BD-ROM, you really don't need one. It's just a convenience thing.

My blu-ray addition in my laptop was my greatest misstep when I designed it. :( shouldve added another fan or a second graphics card.

Digital downloading is where its at baby. I don't remember the last time I used physical media on the computer. And if I could, I bet I was pretty mad about having to do it.

lol, no. Its just not installed anymore. Sits in there and does nothing. Power was a premium on my last build, so I was afraid to hook it up to the power supply.

I live 25min outside of Cleveland. I built my home with some nice acreage so I could enjoy some piece and quiet. I know it may shock some of you, but easy access internet doesn't stretch as far as people like to pretend that it does.

Mine has a Blur-Ray drive in it. You have to buy a $100 piece of software to get it to play movies. I got PowerDvd. Pretty awesome.

Disgusting logic. Imagine if everyone thought like this. No more movie industry. (Well at least no more $200-300 million budgets)

Last time I used mine was when I installed Windows 7 on an SSD... that was months ago.
