Cool stats, but you still need both PC and consoles to enjoy gaming completely.

Nah, you can enjoy gaming completely without having everything. Any combination of any two of the systems will give you more games than you can play throughout the generation.

Depends how often you play games.

I don't think there's a consistent enough stream of "good" games on consoles or handhelds, but that's as someone who plays games daily. I couldn't have a combination of any two consoles and be set for the generation.

Odd that Crowd Funding hasn't been mentioned. Some of the biggest titles coming to PC over the next few years are crowd funded.

Some of the major titles are Star Citizen, Eternity, Wasteland 2, Elite: Dangerous and Planetary Annihilation - just a small cross section.

These are potentially big earners, Star Citizen alone is funded to date in excess of $53 million, 444,674 alpha slots in use with 538,007 accounts.

The more exposure people have to tech, the smarter they become... Eventually leading them to build a PC to game on.

It's addicting once you get going. Always looking for more power, tweaking things and expecting the best.

I'm glad PC gaming is growing. Just think... One day (next 5 years IMO) you wont have to upgrade any more. That's going to be the boom of PC gaming.

Pretty much. Is just the nature of human evolution, going forward.

We are doomed to make the PC the only platform for our gaming needs.

It's called progress.

Take out the cafe dominated countries and the country that banned consoles and you lose.

Yet another comment about "Don't count this , don't count that and you lose" . If that's how you wanna play this then don't count revenue of casual games on consoles like GTA , FIFA , COD , Madden etc and now compare it to PC . Things aren't looking good anymore are they .? Let alone comparing one console against PC .

PC is generating more revenue than consoles even when you combine more than 5 platforms . FIVE PLATFORMS (with billions of dollars generated through COD , FIFA , Madden , PSN , XBL etc etc etc) . PC gaming community is currently the biggest one out there , something that was predicted by nVIDIA back in 2011 when lot of people said "they are just but*hurt" .

He is right . Just on PC alone , I've yet to play so many games from last gen and even from 6th gen , and I play games A LOT . Just recently I've finished Doom 3 for the first time , despite being a high profile game ten years ago . Well that's with the PC. There are games releasing on PC every day, and nowadays even more Japanese games than any of the consoles ever seem to get.

But owning two consoles and no PC? Outside of the holiday season it can sometimes be months between good releases.

Agreed.

Tired of these whining consolites. If they're going to cry about a small country like China banning consoles and other low population countries who can only afford to play in pc cafes then it makes perfect sense to remove casual console games from the equation too.

Madden is the most casual game of all. The game has the skill ceiling of a crawl space. I never even played Madden before and showed up at a tournament and won. I tore up the check and blew the pieces in the faces of all those console peasants.

Consolites cry: "Consoles don't have casual browser games" Farmville takes more skill than CoD.

Don't get me started on these idiotic peasants trying to gang up on the pc. "But PC has no direct competition while MS and Sony are at war", boo hoo that has no impact on anything and they know it.

@IgGy621985 said:

Do you? Because I would disagree at this point, maybe in the PS2 era where there was such a big difference between consoles and PC, but now that the best two consoles are glorified dumbed down PC's I don't think that sentiment holds weight.

The Japanese market is barely what it used to be, and a disgusting majority of western games show up on PC. You can easily run the PC the entire gen, and miss a handful of noteworthy exclusives here and there, and that's all fine and dandy because more than likely the multiplats alone will give you a healthy supply of games. Nevermind the PC's deeper roster of indie, kickstarter, F2P games to go along with genres that simply don't exist on consoles.

If we're being literal of the word "completely" sure you have an argument, but the necessity that it was I think is frankly over. At this point you do it because you're that much of an enthusiast and want to be in on that stuff (hence why I own all the consoles to go along with my PC).

Don't get me wrong. I'm primarily a PC gamer. And sure, everything is based on your personal preference, but e.g., I miss a lot of sports games on my PC.

Kickstarter is great, but it's getting overused nowadays. A lot of kickstarter projects remain unfinished, or you have to wait years for their completion.

I don't play F2P games, nor MMOs, but I do enjoy some indie titles.

Still, if you can afford it, it's always great to own PC+console since you have more options. Isn't that the beauty of gaming after all?

@mr_huggles_dog: Ok i am fed up with your nonsense.

Do you know where console revenue is coming from? Gta cod and fifa, not the last of us. There are a select few franchsies that make money the rest DONT. They just DONT infact yoshida has said it only 4/10 sony exlusives are sucessfull.

It all has to do with budget and profit, so when a game is made it has to make money, thats why you keep seeing sequels and not alot of new ips.

More money are made from the games above on pc than most multiplats.

The industry is changing, sony has fully embraced indies and f2p because they make money.

As for developers sticking to consoles? Nearly everything is released on pc and released at teh same day. If pc doesnt make money then why do developers release their games on pc? Eg: killer is dead and enslaved or brutal legend came to pc after all? Why? Becuase pc is making money for those games thanks to steam when consoles do not.

Pc gaming is growing, games will sell more in the future.

As for rockstar? Rockstar North does the console version with the highest userbase to cover up their insanse development budget, its like cod only higher. They need as many sales as possible. Since gta 3 they first made the ps2 version then port to pc and xbox. With gta iv more people had x360s so they made both versions and pc got a crap port by rockstar torronto. On the other hand max payne 3 which was made by rockstar vancouver got a pc version. Infact rocktar new england ported bully to pc and x360 and rocktar leeds took team bondi's la noire and ported it to pc. So the reason gta v or destiny is not on pc is techinical and not by choice. Mgs v coming to pc.. pc is getting the games and not "Begging" for console exlusives as you say. In a year or so pc will have every console game released on pc

As for waiting? did you get witcher? nope did ps3 got witcher 2? nope. But lets go back to begging, console gamers still begging for bayoneta 2. Not happeneing because the game belongs to nitendo.

In related news pc gets ryse and dead rising 3.

So i cant really see how pc's position is anything short of amazing.

As for the "master race" aside from being a meme that console gamers take seriously. Pc actually does get everything and does everything better, so i dunno, jelly much?

@jg4xchamp: agreed. Its not likey you gonna get to play everything... or have the money to buy all the systems... and dont forget 3ds it has good games too. The truth is you cant get everything, there isnt enough time in the world to play them anyway

#121 Posted by Cyberdot (3523 posts) -

No, I'm not surprised. There are much more PC gamers than console gamers out there, and yeah, those stats are looking excellent for the PC platform.

I think it's time for console developers to stop caring about consoles as much as they do and focus on optimising their games for the PC.

@blackace:

"League of Legends, DOTA2, WoW, World of Tanks, etc.. is where they are making those billions. If game consoles ever tap into that market, they will grow as well."

How could they?

World of Tanks is already on game consoles and they added Minecraft which onsold the PC version on the XBox platform alone. With rumors of a STEAM app coming to consoles in the future, all M$ and Sony would need to do is support keyboard/mouse devices and gamers could easily play LoL or DOTA2 on their 60in HDTV. Blizzard got Diablo 3 to play brilliantly on game consoles without K/M. You think the same can't be done with DOTA2 and LoL? Only a matter of time and improved hardware down the road.

1) No it didn't on its own. sales in this scenario is a win / lose for console gamers since your version of minecraft is s*it and you've gotta be totally stupid to buy it on the console isntead of just even hooking up a cheap laptop and getting the better version... its a friggin java game for gods sake.

2) Lovely rumours..... I'm sure Sony and Microsoft would LOVE to have a digital store competing with their own >_> with nowhere near the same quality assurance because they are not made for those systems.... talk about wishful thinking.

3) diablo 3 .... that game that was altered to work? and that genre has been on consoles for a long time.... congratualtions in taking the only simplified hack n slash that would actually work..... even then.. the PS4 version doesnt even match the PC version graphically... a Blizzard title........ terrible. You simply DoTA/LoL's controls and you take away half of their charm.

Thats a lot of fairyland nonsense. nobody with half a brain would say Diablo wasn't possible on consoles....

Two current gen consoles and two current gen handhelds. Plus all sixth and seventh gen consoles, and some older still.

For instance: Almost every evening I play Mario Kart 8 or Starhawk, do my daily Mayoral business on Animal Crossing, then I might get back at trying to 100% Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, or play TLoZ: Wind Waker HD, try to find more teensies in Rayman Legends, build up a character in Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition, or play something on older consoles like Okami HD or Puppeteer.

I have around 500 games and am always collecting more when I can.

Hi Cranler

1. Why would we take those out? This isn't a hypothetical discussion. PC is first, factually.

2. Even without China, PC is still ahead of each individual console in sales. You need to combine all 6 to stand a chance. Winning.

It's normally console gamers who say "This don't count , that don't count" . That's why I said then casual crap on consoles also doesn't count . If you count everything then PC makes more revenue than all consoles combined . FACT . Even if you remove F2P scene (which is not casual , and in fact games like DOTA 2 are biggest E-Sports games out there) , then still PC makes more money than each individual console (if not all).

Even if you remove F2P scene (which is not casual , and in fact games like DOTA 2 are biggest E-Sports games out there) , then still PC makes more money than each individual console (if not all).

It's cranler poor guy can't enjoy his ban. Just don't bother with him, he'll just derail.

Oh , I see . Thanks for the info . Will be ignoring him from now on .

PC makes most of its profit from f2p and MMO subscriptions. Nice to have a thread that confirms that fact.

Sorry to burst your bubble Cranler, but f2p, mmo, and moba all count. They also get pretty damn hardcore, with bigger competitive scenes and higher skill caps than any console title.

At the most you can only take out the 10% casual titles, which leaves PC still far ahead of any console.

Carnler? Not sure what you're talking about there.

Consoles have no chance in China and many other countries where the only option for most citizens is playing in a pc cafe so your comeback is to remove casual console games from the equation? The biggest f2p game is as casual as CoD so I guess that should be removed then too?

Go try Madden on the highest difficulty or try playing online and see how casual it is.

So you want to compare 1 unified and more accessible platform to a platform that's in direct competition with 4 other platforms?

LOL! Madden, GTA, CoD etc are nowhere near as casual as those casual browser games on pc that make more money than pc's core games.

I know it goes against the hermit agenda but you do realize that it would require about 5x more console gamers than pc for each individual console to have a chance at beating the pc right?

What is called "console" gaming died last gen with Wii and ps3. "Consoles" are now sff walled-garden PCs. MS caused the convergence with the Xbox 360 and missed their own train with the X1.

PC is always setting the trends. Indie and F2P now embraced by consoles. The future being crowd-funded and user-created games.

Wasn't the xbox a pentium 3 with a geforce card?

Yet gaming at large has been waiting for new consoles for graphics and gameplay to go to the next level.

I think crowd funding will continue to be the exception rather than the norm. Gamers having to invest in every game would be ludicrous.

I feel honored and somewhat sympathetic.

You made a thread just in my honor since we're debating this in other threads....and sympathetic b/c it's sad that mods would let this sort of thing go.

I mean...to let someone make threads solely for the purpose of manipulation.

Again...the kinds of games that make it on PC are NOT the average game. So in your thread I'll spill out the logistics like I have in the other threads.

MOBAs, F2P, and MMOs make up all that gaming revenu guys like to lump up together and say "PC makes more money".....yeah....for 3 types of games.

Steam doesn't release it's sales so you can't go by that figure.

Also, if PC gaming was profitable for the average dev/publisher.....then they wouldn't constantly go to console to sell games. Rockstar is a prime example. They basically look at PC gaming as an afterthought....if they thought it was worth it to release GTA V on PC ....they would have done it....but instead....

..the "master race" has to wait....unlike the "peasants".

Look at CDPR....they're all about PC gaming, right...and PC gamers generally speaking love them to death. Yet....they went to console for the second game....and waiting to put it on console b/c such things had to be tweaked and added....so, basically the PC crowd did beta testing.

Master race....seems you guys might not even get GTA V.

Which would suck....b/c I don't want anyone not to play a game they want to play....but, wow....would it say so much without speaking a word.

You talk as though MMO's, MOBAS, and RPG's are a bad thing lol. Most PC gamers understand those genres are the bread and butter of the platform. Also, given how PC gaming is growing it's becoming clear more people are interested in those types of games than the typical console game. Throw that in with the best version of multi plats and you have a winner. As far as GTA is concerned lol...I'm over that argument. I've been burned out on GTA for awhile now. Wanna rustle my jimmies? Talk about RDR not being on PC.

What are you talking about? lol. Lets stop pretending that people on consoles care about games like LoL, Dota, etc. On most forums, console gamer's constantly talk bad about those games. Part of the reason people play on consoles exclusively is because they don't care about those types of games at all. How is WoT doing on console? Did 75 million people download it? I highly doubt it.

@1fragleft: Really? picking ubifail as an exampe of games selling better on consoles? REALLY? is it not clear yet everyone hates ubi on pc?

As for the last of us? It sold 7 million with the ps4 remaster and let me say this clearly THATS ONE GAME IN 10 YEARS. Not to mention extremely high rated. As yoshida said "only 4/10 sony exlusives sell" So lets not go there, becuase most console exlusives are irrelevant, yet they keep making them.

So yeah, for 180 milion ps3/x360 the sales are quite bad.

Surely you are not claiming that higher sales means better games.

Surely I'm claiming the largest esport scenes, the largest ammount of loyal players, the fact that their playbases GROW after YEARS instead of decline rapidly like most consoles games... that I suggest every facet of them is quality and exactly what a great deal of people want in competitive games?

meanwhile... how many players of CoD and GTA are just chavs that buy it, go "cool I can be a criminal I SO SWAG, or I PLAY DAT SHOOTER WHERE I KILL PEOPLE THAT LOOK LIKE OUR IRAQ WAR!" for a few hours then discard it?

These mobas have more concurrent players each than CoD has across 5 platforms now... their relevence is huge.

What would you use as a measure of quality and reception? media outlets that are currently more focused on praising how "movie like" games are? or how sexist all of us gamers are? or how they can promote their next crappy little video? you can get more consistant information off sites like reddit than this and ign combined... yet I'm suppose to take their measure of quality?

#146 Posted by gamecubepad (6112 posts) -

@1fragleft

Yes, the Xbox was PC as well, but the 360 caused the shift. It was really a war of ideology, and Sony and Nintendo both abandoned the "console" hardware mentality and fell in line with PC mentality.

Crowd funded and user-created games will become a norm and source for a big chunk of quality games. What happens to the standard publishing model at that point who knows.

I believe a new breed of gamer has been evolving on PC and once unified, will do amazing things. Custom rigs, mods, indies, and kick starter games are only a foreshadowing of what's to come.

Fucking stomped.

He forgets many of those moba, f2p, and mmorpg not only score AAA-AA, but they have extremely high skill-caps and multi-million dollar tournaments.

But those are just the fact,s IMO Those genres are more legit than the big console genres that barely have gameplay.

No single console can beat it alone. Best system.

I'd argue that fighting games require a certain level of skill, but those are becoming more popular on PC as well, since MKX, USFIV, and Tekken 7 are all on board. Oh and the devs for Tekken 7 claim PC will be the main platform. *yawn* not much left for consoles except corridor movie games.

Only valve multiplats sell better on pc.

I said TLOU sold 7 million, I said nothing of TLOU Remaster.

Uncharted franchise was at 17 million sales as of March 2012. So that's almost 6 million sales per installment.

God of War is at 21 million sales.

Halo has 50 million sales while one of the pc's biggest franchises Civ is at 21 million.

It would be nice to see sales breakdowns on multiplats like Tombraider, Bioshock, Arkham etc. i would imagine the console version sales are much higher. Especially when you consider that one of the pc's biggest exclusives of the year Divinity sold only 160k copies yet that was enough to put it at the top of the steam sales charts. Console games that sell with those kinds of numbers would be at the bottom of the npd charts.

On the bright side it's probably the oversaturation of pc games that kills individual pc game sales.

You think Ubi doesn't know the digital sales numbers of it's own games?

Assassins Creed 3 sold 12 million copies in the first 2 months. Starcraft 2 was one of the most anticipated pc games of all time and sold 4.5 million after 5 months

In light of this it's safe to say that the bulk of those Assassins Creed sales are from consoles.
