Pachter: "I don't know why Iwata is still employed"

The Wii U's performance so far Pachter characterized as "underwhelming," but noted it's possible "but unlikely" that exciting new titles will reinvigorate growth. He believes that Nintendo is missing a huge opportunity to bring new gamers into their brands: Nintendo should put old GameBoy Advance content on phones and tablets for free, and charge $3 to $5 for more recent titles from the DS. Pachter feels this would generate enormous revenue for Nintendo and bring millions of new fans into their brands, and give them a strong way to sell newer titles on the 3DS and Wii U that use those brands.

"I don't know why Iwata is still employed," Pachter said, given that he refuses to take advantage of this opportunity while the handheld market continues to shrink and the Wii U has failed so far to catch on in a big way.

If Patcher is still emplyed in the industry, then anyone can have a job there.

Hopefully he won't be for much longer, or at the least, new management heads move in that can dictate where Nintendo goes from here.

Nintendo misses a lot of opportunities simply by the way they design their platforms. It has very little to do with "teh graphx" either.

But yes, I agree they are also missing out on revenue streams by not putting older titles up in more convenient, and available packages. I don't think Nintendo needs to move any games over to Android, or iPhone, but they could do more than they do now.

I mean, love or hate Pachter, but he has a point. Nintendo desperately needs some new minds that will push Nintendo away from the gimmicks, make a console with specs that will challenge Sony/Microsoft, and get third parties back on their platform. If it wasn't for the 3DS, could you imagine how much worse off Nintendo would be right now?

They actually don't make a living to be right. They make a living to attempt to predict things. Their analyst not fortune tellers.

I'll never understand why Iwata is a scapegoat for all of Nintendo's problems, he's not the only person keeping them in the hardware business, if you want Nintendo to change they would need a complete overhaul in management, not just CEO.

I agree that upper management needs to change, but Pachter is such an idiot. The cell phone thing is particularly stupid. Every single GBA game ever was designed to be played with buttons, and would be utterly disastrous on a smartphone.

I agree, Nintendo should make a super plug in and play console that has Nes SNES n64 Dreamcast, gameboy, Sega ect games ready to download for cheap. Not over price them either, and make games for that platform no gimmicks, just a pure gamers console. Can be both console/handheld just a small box with good controller dosn't need to be a power house, just enough to play classics in 1080p.

I definitely agree that they need new management at Nintendo, so many blown opportunities. If it wants to compete it needs to match at least the specs of it's competition. It's all about online gaming with friends, and services. Nintendo for some reason doesn't get that-- when it's so obvious.

Wii is a success, DS is a success, 3DS is a success. Why shouldn't he be employed? I'm sure Iwata's job is incredibly difficult, and to simply give up his position would be a cop out. You gotta work through the tough times, not give up.

I agree. His triumpths dwarf his failures. A company that is truly in trouble would have seen many layoffs and tons of defections. My question is why havent we seen this? Both MS and Sony have had recent layoffs including all the major western third party publishers. Why has nintendo not joined the party then?

I agree. Nintendo is losing so much money because everyone just pirates old Nintendo games on their iphones. I see it all the time. People have SMB1-3, SMW, pokemon etc and they all play great.

So ignore all the haters who says the games need buttons. They don't. Touch screen works fine for all those old games. There is no reason why they cant at the very least give sell NES/SNES and GB/GBC/GBA games. Pretty much none of those games even used the R or L buttons, so that's a none issue.

Because his real world job doesn't really involve video games. Gametrailers asks him for info, but his job isn't about covering and making predictions about games. He is a stock market analyst that covers dozens of corporations. He just happens to also cover a couple of video game companies.

But, to those saying that he is always wrong. Totally untrue, given that he makes dozens of "predictions" every single day in his day to day job. He is actually right about 90% of the time. It's just that when anything controversial gets said, or when he does make a mistake, it makes headlines and everyone takes about it. Nobody says anything when he is right. He totally predicted almost everything that happened (business-wise) at this year's E3, and nobody talked about it.

I've spoken my peace on Iwata. He and Nintendo's entire management has made very questionable decisions over these past few years that don't instill confidence in me for Nintendo's future.

If the Wii U continues the way it has, and a thing known as reality is finally able to puncture Nintendo's bubble, I'm very curious as to what's going to happen. I see things quickly coming to a head if something doesn't change.

And Japanese companies are traditionally very reluctant to change due to cultural factors. It's going to be interesting to watch.
