So I wiped the dust off Bioshock today. To be honest I was surprised how well the game had aged, sure some of the gunplay was slightly unrewarding at times but in terms of overall game mechanics, immersion and story it beats TLOU hands down. It might be the case that such a long time has passed that I simply cant remember Bioshock getting as much hype as TLOU but I am pretty sure it didnt.

Dont get me wrong im not bashing TLOU its one of the 7 awesome games I own for my PS3, I was just so impressed with Bioshock for the second time in my life, I think if it was a new IP released tomorrow it would be just as competitive with any current titles.

The story, atmosphere, setting and art of Bioshock are all fantastic. Unfortunately, I simply don't find it that fun to play through. The Last of Us hits all of those marks, but is also plays incredibly well. So in this instance, I have to say The Last of Us is superior. They are very different games though, so it's hard to do a fair comparison.

I have no love for the gameplay in Bioshock. I honestly stopped caring about the story halfway through Bioshock. The broken balance and unsatisfying gunplay was just too much for me to care about the world or it's characters.

I don't even know how you compare the two....both have great stories, but TLOU connected with me a lot more. Rapture was an awesome setting, but seeing the detail Naughty Dog put into its post-apocalyptic world was chilling alongside the giraffes and all those depressing letters. I just have to give the nod to TLOU.

@always_explicit: lol.., They both are 2 completely different types of games that were both equally awesome. Why you chose TLOU to compare it to blows my mind. Cool opinion though.

Remember just cause people have an opinion, doesn't mean it's correct or even good. While Bioshock is a great game, it is not even in the same league as TLOU.

While I absolutely love both games, Bioshock is my 2nd favourite game of all time. The level of immersion in that game is only second to Half Life 2.

I haven't played TLOU, but I thought BioShock was a real chore to finish. The gameplay was really weak and although the atmosphere was great, it didn't really offer a whole lot of variety.

I thought Infinite was vastly superior in every way.

If you liked Bioshock so much, I STRONGLY recommend to buy System Shock 2 (it is available cheap on gog.com and works flawlessly on any Windows 7 PC). It does everything Bioshock did, but is much more immersive and does not have certain gameplay issues Bioshock had (i.e. infinite free respawns). You will even learn to love the graphics despite being dated by todays standards.

Exactly. Bioshock is a game I really want to praise as art because of it's beautiful sylized graphics, cohesive atmosphere and the issues and concepts it takes on, but in the end, I just don't have many fun memories playing it. All I remember is getting lost in a maze of needlessly confusing (and claustrophobic) level design.

I wouldn't say so. IMO the best games this gen:

1. MGS4

2. The Last of Us

3. GTAV

4. Uncharted 2

5. Bioshock

Runners up: Skyrim, Arkham City, Oblivion, SMG1/2, Obvlion

The first Bioshock was a pretty mediocre game apart from the cool twist.

it pretty much did tbh. that was the golden era of 07 when bioshock, halo3, crysis, modern warfare, the witcher, mass effect and gears (pc) launched in the space of about 3 months.

good times...

Bioshock 1 WAS a great game. It use to be one of my favorites from early this gen...

But lets be real here, Bioshock 1 doesnt come CLOSE TO the level of quailty in the Last of Us' gameplay, story, characters etc nor is it as cohesive of an experience.

Hell, Bioshock 1 still doesnt even surpass Uncharted 2..never mind The Last of Us lol.

1. Last of Us has MAGNITUDE superior combat and gunplay.

In Last of Us you actually feel like a survivor too, whether it be scavenging for items, that actually matter to the gameplay, or in the combat -where you have so many options of attack, and enemies who react to you...making for many dynamic encounters.

Encounters with the Infected play out much different to human encounters as well... each have their own nuances..So there is a lot of depth to the combat in Last of Us - also due to the fact its backed by item resource management gameplay and real time crafting.

There is so much more strategy then meets the eyes involved in the gameplay of Last of Us

-Do you craft for offense or defense/ when is the right time to craft / do you stealth or do what you need to do provided you have the resources etc / do you set traps with bombs or play cat and mouse with enemies...

And if you got caught in stealth, Ok improvise now -brawl/run/shoot or combo of each, lose enemies then give stealth another go etc.

You can do so much with the combat in Last of Us. Its sandbox like. You play combat encounters in Last of Us how ever way you want!

Just to make it simple...

Playing cat and mouse with enemies as you pick them off one by one is pure exhilaration....getting caught in stealth and improvising on the run is exhilarating....losing enemies after getting caught and re-strategizing is exhilarating...getting by on the skin of your teeth while on low resources is exhilarating....I can go on and on...

The Last of Us has the GREATEST combat gameplay of any game PERIOD. I have never played combat more intense, brutal, and dynamic in my life.

Where as Bioshock 1 plays like your average generic FPS with magic(plasmids etc)

2. Last of Us has such a amazing characters too. Bioshock had NONE last time i checked lol

3. Its not even close in the story department either.

Last of Us has one of the greatest stories ever in gaming - the beautiful yet dauting JOURNEY of Joel and Ellie who you deeply cared for....The story was mature, deep and thought provoking on its own merits too....

NOT forced like In BiosShock 1 (we have socialist undertiones, we are so cool and mature)

And this has been a problem with all Bioshock games...they have ridicilous twists just for the sake of trying to appear complex/deep...

The whole thing with Ryan at the end etc. The story in Bioshock 1 went to SHIT towards the end.

Not to mention that in The Last of Us, gameplay and story which are both excellent in Last of Us, come together so perfectly like two halfes into one. No game even comes close to managing that, on the level of the Last of Us etc.

Bioshock is just as much of a mess between story and gameplay as any other big FPS or action game

Even though I liked Bioshock 1, The Last of Us DESTROYS IT in every way...and thats real talk

In fact, the Last of Us is ONE of the greatest games I have ever played BAR NONE.....NOTHING EVEN COMES close to topping The Last Of Us for me. Naughty Gods indeed!

Why can't you be just like normal person and admit you like TLOU And Uncharted more. The two games are different, theres very little to compare them with. no need to get all Fanboy up in here.
