Poll: One Year Later: What wins YOUR game-of-the-year from 2012 (62 votes)

Halo 4 5%
The Last Story 3%
Xenoblade Chronicles 11%
Mass Effect 3 13%
Assassin's Creed III 0%
Far Cry 3 13%
Dishonored 3%
Borderlands 2 3%
Journey 8%
The Walking Dead 5%
Persona 4 Golden 10%
Mark of the Ninja 0%
XCOM: Enemy Unknown 13%
OTHER / "I'm a hipster!" 13%

i like to revive these because often at the end of the year people get swept up in hype and over time their opinions develop.

for me, 2012 was a really disappointing year.

  • Halo 4 = graphics game
  • Mass Eff 3 = horrible ending
  • Dishonored = bad morality system
  • Far Cry 3 = your average shooter (gameplay wise)
  • Assassin Creed III = 8 hour tutorial XCOM = weak level design

borderlands 2 and journey were really good, but they probably would not have won any other year this gen

It was Far Cry 3 for me.

#2 Posted by BigBoss255 (3539 posts) -

Oh my god. That must have been the worst gaming year of all time.

I'll go with Witcher 2 X360.

Well after 2013 I still have to go with The Walking Dead for GOTY 2012.

mass effect 3 for me, i didn't mind the ending too much, it made sense to me. i do prefer the re-edited version. Having played and loved the trilogy since day one, i can safely say that the vision for the mass effect games is as close to the type of game i dreamed about back in the 80's

more please bioware.

Xcom and Halo 4 were also right up there.

This or The Last Story probably. Maybe Journey.

Guess I'll go with Mass Effect 3.

#10 Posted by Zassimick (6791 posts) -

I'm not really sure. Halo 4 was so much fun for me, and even though I was a skeptic when I played Journey in 2013 it blew me away by how much I enjoyed it. Borderlands 2 was just more Borderlands, Mass Effect 3 was my favorite entry but not my favorite game of the year, and I didn't have fun with Assassin's Creed 3 or Dishonored. Didn't play other games on the list.

I haven't finished Persona 4 Golden yet, and I'm preparing myself for getting into Xenoblade Chronicles again (last time I didn't too far till I got distracted). I imagine that either of those would be at the top of the list if I actually beat them.

Lollipop Chainsaw.

(I spent most of 2012 playing 2011's Skyrim and Dark Souls.)

#12 Posted by drekula2 (1949 posts) -

ill probably give it to journey for at least trying to change things up

Dat ending almost killed the game/series for still haunts me. The game was amazing but FMR that ending pissed me off.

#14 Posted by Pikminmaniac (9110 posts) -

I'll remember 2012 as the year that I felt I hadn't played a GOTY caliber games. It felt lackluster throughout. Maybe Darksiders 2? It was pretty good, but still not at the level of its predecessor.

#15 Edited by charizard1605 (59007 posts) -

Persona 4 Golden. The other games put together aren't half as good as P4G is.

Well, okay, maybe Xenoblade? I never played enough of it, so I'll refrain from commenting on that one.

Crusader Kings 2. Didn't just beat every other game that year, it nailed them up and crucified them and then plucked out their eyes and sent back the corpse.

It was a well above average shooter. Good solid game despite the ending.

Mass Effect 3 was pretty darn awesome, despite disappointing ending, like 99% of the rest of the game was damn cool.

Sure that ending disappointed me, but I was over it by my second or third playthrough.

"Dishonored = bad morality system"

I disagree. Dishonored was a story about revenge. But it showed you that if you got your revenge through any means necessary that you end up being a way worse person than the people that you were after. Dishonored endings offered perfect closure for the ways you played the game

"Far Cry 3 = your average shooter (gameplay wise)"

Again, I totally disagree. Far Cry 3 allowed you to tackle objectives and checkpoints the way you wanted. I think that makes for some great gameplay.

Of those, Borderlands easily got the most playtime from me.

MotN, ME3, Xcom, Dishonored, and TWD were also really good.

Still don't know how I feel about Xenoblade (about 25 hours in) - fun gameplay and the story is getting pretty interesting, but the dialogue and voice acting are terrible and it's packed with boring sidequests

where is the witcher 2? how dare you leave the true goty out!

#22 Posted by gameofthering (10372 posts) -

Must have been a bad year. I can't remember any game that I thought of being amazing in 2012.

Hotline Miami.

#25 Edited by Seabas989 (10576 posts) -

Xenoblade Chronicles easily (I live in NA).

Journey was good but not good enough to be GOTY.

P4 was my 2008 GOTY.

Overall 2012 was meh.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

journey for me

Ah yeah forgot about it but this was an honorable mention. One of the ebst racing games I played this past gen.

#29 Posted by jg4xchamp (48783 posts) -

At the time it was Journey(didn't play enough of the games I wanted to play in 2012)

At the moment something between Journey, Hotline Miami, and Mark of the Ninja.

Mass Effect 3 without any doubt in my mind

I agree. I only started playing it back in January and can't believe that I waited that long to try it. It's not only the best strategy game of 2012, but also the best RPG. 2013 was a much better year for gaming than 2012, yet if CK2 would have launched in 2013, it still would have been my GOTY.

#34 Posted by darkangel115 (1849 posts) -

1) ME3

2) halo 4

3) TWD

4) BL2

5) Far Cry 3

2012 was a great year for gaming

#35 Edited by Mozelleple112 (6695 posts) -

2012 was a piss poor year, but I guess I would give it to Journey.

#36 Posted by Floppy_Jim (25810 posts) -

P4G released here in 2013 so that's easy, XCOM: Enemy Unknown. I really do wanna try Dishonoured but I'll wait for Sony to shove it up my PS3's ass via PS+.

my bad then.

2012 was my least favorite game of the generation, by a considerable margin.

This poll needs an option for New Super Mario Bros. U, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Nintendo Land (it wasn't that great, but you did include crap like Journey after-all).

I'd say the best game of the year was probably New Super Mario Bros. U, but I voted for The Last Story because you didn't include it in the poll, and the game could use more love anyway.

#39 Posted by Consternated (498 posts) -

Sleeping Dogs was a pretty awesome game.

#40 Posted by PhazonBlazer (11962 posts) -

Far Cry 3, 2012 wasn't the strongest year of last-gen.

#41 Posted by good_sk8er7 (4322 posts) -

I think mine was Mass Effect 3.

Journey is up there too. I really liked Assassin's Creed 3 until I played it a second time. Now I really don't like it anymore.

#42 Posted by Rage010101 (5470 posts) -

I originally picked Enemy Unknown at the end of 2012 and my decision has not been changed. Such a great game.

#43 Edited by RageQuitter69 (1297 posts) -

Sleeping Dogs was my GOTY for 2012 because, and it was also the most underrated game of 2012.

#44 Posted by Alcapello (970 posts) -

It made me feel like no other game has ever, and that is saying a lot.

#45 Posted by wiifan001 (18436 posts) -

Xenoblade Chronicles is the best rpg on Nintendo console since Chrono Trigger

#46 Posted by bbkkristian (14963 posts) -

Xenoblade Chronicles

#47 Posted by TTUalumni13 (584 posts) -

Xenoblade, easily. It will also be remembered longer than those other games..

#48 Edited by jun_aka_pekto (16703 posts) -

Far Cry 3 for me. I suspect it didn't get the GS GOTY in the wake of that school massacre and the news channels were putting the spotlight on video game violence.

#49 Edited by ReadingRainbow4 (14709 posts) -

I guess Xenoblade. Sleeping dogs was also awesome, such a refreshing change of pace we really need more games set in places other than Murica.

#50 Posted by ristactionjakso (5801 posts) -

Still is FC3.
