So, the PlayStation TV. You probably know what it is- a joke. The TV based microconsole based on Vita hardware that Sony released to absolutely no success, like all things Vita, a while ago.

I get it- we already have lolVita, and having a variant of it that is amazingly enough, even more limited, leads to just more lols.

I understand.

But there is one very cool piece of technology in the PlayStation TV, something very minor and understated, that I have never seen anyone talk about. I think it's pretty cool, and I want all future consoles to have it.

Ready? Let me lay it out for you:

  • Switching the PSTV on switches on your TV too (I am aware that this is also done by the Xbox One, and to a more limited degree, PS4 and Wii U, but stay with me here)
  • If you turn your TV off, your PSTV automatically goes into sleep mode too.
  • Then, when you switch the TV on again next? The PSTV wakes up from Sleep Mode, and lets you continue from exactly where you were.

Essentially? This is the ultimate form of Suspend/Resume. You don't need to switch the TV on, get the console controller, and then switch the console back on. You just switch the TV on, and your console boots itself right back up to the point where it was when you switched the TV screen off, and it went into sleep.

This I think is a very cool piece of technology. It is something that I think all systems could stand aping, honestly.

1 - LOLVITA

2 - The sleep mode for the vita is much better because it doesn't eat the battery , so its nothing special for PSTV.

I would agree but I am mostly a news and sports watcher on TV. I don't want my TV to pick up with last nights CNN when new information is might be available now. For sports I could see some use for this, but as I am not married, I can usually sit down to watch a game with only the occasional interruption. But if someone is an avid TV watcher I can see the positives of this. I use Netflix, Amazon or HBO Go for entertainment watching and I'm ok for now.

lol... I have something better, it's called Bravia sync. Simply hit the DS4 home button and it turns on my tv and stereo. When I turn my PS4 off, the tv and stereo switches back to tv mode.

Gotta appreciate the little things. It's a neat feature, but one I personally don't need. Nine times out of 10 my TV just stays on CBC.

Not a very compelling reason IMO to get one. However, regardless of its critical reception, I'm sure there's many great reasons to own a PSTV, such as access to some of the Vita titles, download PS1 games and PSP games, play them on the TV. That's a lot of reasons to own a PSTV, plus it's cheap (because nobody is buying it). Reasons not to? Fucking memory cards, no external HDD support for games. It's a mixed bag of reasons to get and not get it. Maybe the only compelling reason to get one is consumer preference.

Anyhow, I hope there's one way to in which Sony could save the digital infrastructure of the Vita/PSTV and that's to basically allow PS4s to act like a PSTV with access to all the same PS1 games, PSP games, Vita games, minis and normal downloadable designed titles, build it into the PS4 to give people access to the same titles available on the PSTV so that those titles can sell. They could reap all the benefits in software sales without taking loss on the hardware. Not to mention, it could be a highly satisfying convenience for patrons of the PlayStation market, and would greatly expand the library of the PS4, maybe even more than Xbox One's 360 BC will expand the market of available titles on the Xbox One.

Oh come on now, if they wanted to do this I'm sure it'd be available on older consoles all the same. It'd probably piss off early adopters of PS4s for newer gamers to get features older ones can't. Then again there's a slight chance it could increase sales of newer models, I mean look how last gen people bought multiple Nintendo DS handhelds every time they added new colors or improved it with DS Lite and XL and DSi (heck, it's happening all over again). But, I think people demand more of Sony and that wouldn't fly, plus the DS was less than 1/2 the price the PS4 goes for.

Still, if there's one reason to wait for a new PS4 model (for me at least) it's I'm not a fan of that parallelogram cut of the PS4 they've had since launch, I mean replacing the glossy surfaces with a matte finish and increasing the HDD size to 1TB is a start but damn I really want a redesign badly. Part of my fear of getting a PS4 soon is that in no time after I do get one they're gonna upgrade that motherfucker and I'm gonna want to punch myself in the balls for not waiting.

@Bigboi500: Sure, and I use that all the time, but that is ONLY for Bravia TVs, and as far as I am aware, works only with the PS4 Switching the TV on, but not being able to switch it off.

Yeah it doesn't switch the tv off, and your co-operating equipment has to be Sony with a Bravia feature. Luckily my HTS has the feature as well, and it's really nice.

Never heard of HDMI CEC / Control I guess. Something that really has NOTHING to do with consoles.

I feel like the device had so much potential, unfortunately, Sony shot it in the foot before anything good could come out of it.

Yeah, I almost imagine a scenario where, "oh, this device could be pretty good, hmm yes, let's remove some stuff." Gotta keep giving people reasons we are going bankrupt.

This is what the Vita TV should've based it's core design philosophy from. It's perfect; It adds less than an inch in overall height to your console and the thing just works. I understand that this is completely different than what Sony had designed the Vita TV around but let's be honest; the main reason to buy a Vita TV is to.. play Vita games on your TV and the thing cannot even get that right.

Isn't a PSTV like $30 now? I wonder if Sony will integrate it in the inevitable PS4 slim. It'll give it BC to PS1 titles plus access to digital PSP and Vita games. The PSTV itself is really small so it shouldn't take up much space within a PS4 revision.

My Sony blu-ray player does that. When i pop in a disc it automatically turns on my TV, and switches to the proper input as well. I don't think it's a big deal, PS3/PS4 maybe even have that feature if you look for it(?). Not sure.

@charizard1605: if you have a Bravia tv the ps4 and i believe ps3 already do this. It's called Bravia sync and allows you to control your ps4 with your tv remote, right down to powering down when you turn the tv off.

That's right I forgot about that. You can use the tv remote to control blu ray movies on your PS4 as well.
