Modern JRPG from Sega Megadrive...WHAT !? Yep, they are still making JRPGs for Sega Megadrive there, and for some other ancient consoles, too, like Sega Mega CD and Dreamcast....WHAT !?

Anyway, the most technologically advanced JRPG for Sega Megdrive that comes in astonishing 64MB cartridges :D

Pier Solar HD is coming to PC on September 30th (along with PS3, PS4 and Ouya).

And before you say LOOOOL SNES-looking game on PC, just watch this trailer. If you don´t find it beautiful you have no heart (for real, you should check it with a doctor, pal).

Having snes graphics doesint make it beautiful. I guess I need to wear my nostalgic glasses. I will say the non snes stuff does look nice though. Besides that game doesint catch my interest.

That is quite good looking (especially that overworld) but that art style almost feels a dime a dozen these days.

I knew there was a reason the Dreamcast is the only console I still have hooked up.

I know, but colors...color they have chosen kinda fascinate me. This combination of blue, black, brown and gold...remembers me the artsyle of fairy tales I used to read when I was a kid. I dunno, there is something in the artstyle of this game that the developer really nailed it.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I don't understand why people consider retro-looking graphics to automatically be a plus point. So many indie games being thrown out with graphics striving to resemble old games, and people praise those so much. And I don't understand it. Only reason I can think is that I started gaming late, and as such I don't have fond memories of playing games that looked like that.

It really is nostalgia purposes. I love games like these, but I'll just play the games like these that I already have, I want new stuff, with better and upgraded graphics. Pretty much Ocarina of Time was a turning point for me. If a console game that has adventure qualities doesn't at least have wii level graphics, then I'm not interested.

I don't mind games like this on handhelds though.

In regards to this games graphics, I think people should know this game was actually created for the Sega Genesis. Like, it can physically be played with a Sega Genesis system.

That's why it looks the way it does. It's not simply another PC indie game with sprite graphics.

I don't think it's that good looking. I mean, almost everyclassic JRPG looks like that. Also, shitty anime cutscenes confirmed (no really, it's shitty looking anime).

That trailer reminds me of The Stanley Parable.

Its a cheaper way of game developers to release their games that have a story and feeling, not always "to hook teh playahs!" as you insist. Some developers still strive to have a good story and background over anything else and this "SNES graphics" just fits so damn well that it's like a... gateway for them and it works so well because most RPGs relied on story and character development most of all.

Exactly, this isn't just another indie game. This is actually an home-brew game made by a bunch of dudes from Eidolon's Inn, an internet forum dedicated to home-brew software, so it's not actually japanese either. In fact, the studio they created during development (WaterMelon) is based in Iowa, USA.
The original version actually comes in an actual cartridge and is playable in an actual Sega Genesis, and it's both the latest and biggest game for the system.

Also, the (few) reviews I've seen have given the game really good scores (around 9/10).

The HD version, (with other graphical enhancements besides just pixel count), is also being released for current-gen consoles so it's not a pc-exclusive like the thread title may make you think.

Its not retro art style. Its an actual Sega Genesis game that was made by a group to celebrate the genesis anniversary.

Cause its cheap and they know some will get drawn to it since it something close to their childhood in looks. Me personally I dont care for it and im one of those people who grew up with graphics like that.

Nice strawman you've got there.

I understand that it's cheap to make games this way. But that doesn't guarantee that all the resources will go on to make the rest of the game good. A game can have a good story and background without having retro-looking graphics, and the same way, a game with such graphics may fall short. Mind you, I don't mean this game specifically. I mean this kind of game in general.

Isn't this Pier Solar HD? Neither the SNES nor Genesis could run the game with that graphical fidelity. Maybe the original version.
