People with high end rigs have been posting their results with the official Oculus Rift compatibility app.
Is an old CPU you say? Here's a more recent one!
Yet, the PS4 is capable of VR! Does this mean that the PS4 is indeed supercharged PC?
They're more than capable CPU's, the fact of the matter is the newer CPU's which have replaced the 2600k/3770k over the years are not a substantial jump in performance, it's like 20%, so if your CPU is overclocked you're more than above the necessary threshold to run any of this stuff, hell, even if it's not overclocked you're still fine.
That is just a stupid app that see's your processor as not being current so it fails you from passing it, software like this is idiotic.

Exactly.
It's like any other "can your pc run it" app...they are only so accurate and don't take everything into account. Most likely what it's doing is what the above poster mentioned which is looking a processor generation and things like that.

compatible := If (modelNumber >= 4590) TRUE; else FALSE;
!?
The 2600k is not exactly new. It came out in early 2011 making it 5 years old.
Yet it's still strong enough to run everything up to this day, esp with OC.

We hit a wall in actual CPU compute needs for application. Even my old i7 930 has plenty of headroom for the vast majority of single programs. Multitasking larger applications can bring it down though.
I'm rebuilding my PC this summer and I'm upset I have to replace my motherboard because that means I have to buy a new CPU. I currently have a 3770k and it would be absolutely fine for the forseeable future given how we've hit such a wall for CPU needs.
I failed the CPU and USB(?) requirements. FX-8350 @ 4.5GHz is insufficient and my USB 3 controller is incompatible. lol.
Rift can piss off then. I have an Ivy Bridge i5 and am more than happy with it. Wouldn't upgrade for Rift.
Too bad for you herms, time to upgrade and shell out another $700 or 800 ( + the VR headset ) chaps. The joys of PC gaming ....
You expect Sony to hand out theirs for free or something? Even if it ends up being cheaper (for just the headset mind you), the specs for it are still way worse. Plus all of the games for PSVR look like ass ATM, so have fun shelling out $$$ for that extra external processor it needs just to work decently. Aren't under powered consoles just great?
Besides, that's a 5 year old CPU anyway and it is STILL more than capable of running VR with a good GPU paired with it. Use your brains rather than relying on a dumb as dirt app that only considers CPU generations to tell you what works and what doesn't.
Pretty sure current i5's are weaker than sandy bridge i7's.
in heavily multithreaded tests. The newer i5s have better single core performance
Well this is interesting...
I have the most powerful AMD CPU (FX9590) that is currently available, yet the app failed it.
I should have figured that though, since stronger Intel CPU equivalents supposedly failed the test as well. Also, I have integrated 6 x USB 3.0 ports in my build, yet that failed as well. The GTX 770 I can understand.
lol, my memory and OS passed. Lame
Honestly, between the cost of the Rift and the price of the build required to run this as they recommend, they really are pricing this right out of the mainstream market.

Of course, the PS4 CPU is actually a quantum space drive in disguise XD. It can also make taco's on command.

var User = System.OperatingSystem;
compatible = (User.Cpu >= Required.Cpu) && (User.Gpu > = Required.Gpu) && compareUserMinorSpec(User);
@ten_pints:
I think even 8350 @ 4.5GHz loses to i5-4590 in aggregate gaming benchmarks. No big loss on my part as I'm not looking forward to it very much. Especially at $500(?).
I just wondered what the ps4 will be doing since even AMDs high-end cpus can't handle it.
LOL I7 3770K not powerful enough... Well look here you crappy app.
My computer blows away an Oculus Rift PC.

This.
+ Also keep in mind that the ps4 vr device comes with it's own inbuilt processor.
The app seems to be going by the age of the CPU's instead of their actual performance. A 2600k is plenty powerful enough for Rift, especially if it's overclocked...

Intel is waiting on AMD... Recent Intel Xeon scales to 18 cores per socket.
For example, XBO's Crackdown 3's massive destruction sequence with game play was processed on Intel Xeon servers.
Intel could have smashed AMD with 4 core i3, 8 core i5, 12 core i7, 18 core EE SKU lines.
For AMD to survive, Intel is not purposely focusing on their low end PC segments, but Intel can't wait forever...
@loco145:
Try faking your CPU model string.
Read http://www.tweakandtrick.com/2010/12/change-processor-name-permanently.html
On my old Intel Core i7-740QM CPU @ 1.73 Ghz work laptop.
I inserted "Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770K CPU @ 3.8 GHz" string into Windows registry
LOL...
I could rebuild my DIY ViDock (External Graphics card adapter to laptop's ExpressCard slot) link it to my spare R9-290...

Please note that we focus on single-core performance CPUs
Single core??? LOL
if my shitty $400 pc can run CS:GO in more than 120fps and 1440p, why it cant run those pathetic wii-style oculus games?
basically any PC can run VR, all they have to do is lower the resolution or settings, but oculus games look like crap and easy to get 90fps >1080p, i see no reason to have a gtx970 by now, its not like they are releasing battlefront of starcitizen in VR
