What makes me wonder about his death is that there doesn't seem to be a successor in line. Miyamoto and Takeda are now in charge until one is determined. If they knew he was so sick as to be close to suddenly dropping dead, you'd think this would already have been long ago talked about.

Perhaps Iwata kept this completely secret (as much as he could) to not upset investors. It doesn't seem that even Nintendo was expecting this.

Did a double take on this one when I looked at gaf, then thought it was a joke until I looked in the thread...

RIP Iwata. I didn't always agree with his business ideas, but I deeply respected him as a person. He was a gamer at heart for the most part, and his directs and comments showed that he cared a lot for fans of gaming in general.

@MirkoS77: Yeah it sounds sudden but there aren't many details except for this quote from TWSJ:

"The company disclosed the news on Monday morning Tokyo time, saying his condition worsened rapidly in recent days after he presided over Nintendo’s annual shareholder meeting on June 26."

http://www.wsj.com/articles/nintendo-president-satoru-iwata-dies-of-cancer-1436747352

Not many details on how it happened or if he even knew. But ir definitely sounds like they were not prepared.

No doubt he was under constant stress from Nintendo's situation in the past recent years. Probably should've stood down as stress can significantly compromise the body's ability to fight disease, at least until he was better. If he suddenly fell ill, he could've been on chemo and gotten an infection. That can kill you quickly as chemo reduces the immune system to nothing.

Goes to show you how quickly things can change, I definitely didn't expect this. He looked really healthy just weeks ago, but looks can be very deceiving. My condolences to his family and friends. Nintendo's definitely going to have a lot of difficulty recovering from this.

I'm more curious as to the circumstances of his death. Cancer? I haven't had time to read up on this, but what kind? Was he in treatment? Had radiation or chemo? I'm a cancer patient myself so know a bit about this. His surgery wasn't too long ago, and definitely too short for any regimen of chemotherapy to be deemed effective. I'm curious as to whether he was diagnosed terminal and he decided to just live the rest of the time he had as usual as he could manage?

This is crazy.

Oh god, I'm so sorry...

For those of you wondering what Nintendo will do now, worry not. They, like any other big company in the world, likely have contingency plans for these rare and troublesome occasions. Interim leaders and all that.

They more than likely will continue as is with what is set in stone already, perhaps making a few different turns here and there. Everything that is not set in stone can suffer big changes, if the next person leading Nintendo decides to do so. As to where NX falls, we don't really know. It's specs, purposes and general guidelines may have been decided for quite some time (thus the public announcement of it's existence) or not (thus the lack of any news regarding it ever since the announcement). So that may remain as is or suffer some changes.

Shigeru Miyamoto has issued a statement: “I am surprised at this sudden news and overcome with sadness.”

Tributes have poured in from across the industry, with leaders at Sony, Microsoft, and the development community paying their respects.

and Shigeru Miyamoto, have already taken on the task of managing the business, and as such is hoping for a smooth transition.

The company states: "Other than Mr. Iwata, we have two representative directors (Mr. Takeda and Mr. Miyamoto). Even by now, these representative directors have been together discussing and managing to operate the company, so we anticipate no issue in the near future."

The last software Iwata ever released was Splatoon.

The last hardware was the New 3DS.

I am glad I got both, ultimately.

I openly criticized Mr. Iwata on a number of occasions for the direction he was taking Nintendo, but even if I didn't agree with the philosophy behind the Wiiu and the Wii before it, that doesn't do a thing to change what this man offered to the industry and gamers in general. I'm pretty floored to see just how many projects this guy was a part of and often in a major way which I never really thought about til now.

Even my father who's not really into games was like, wow the CEO of Nintendo just died.

I'm really hoping NX kicks major ass now, it's a shame the WiiU was the last thing he was a part of. Cancer needs to be eradicated already it took my grandmother from me before I even got the chance to meet her.

We understand Iwata, we do. Thanks for everything.
