Nintendo segments via DSi/New 3DS, should Sony/MS try? Better hardware, graphics, exclusives.

I heard before that DSi had exclusives that weren't compatible with older hardware and the New 3DS will also be doing this. MH 4 also seem to have better graphics (textures) due to the new hardware.

You think Sony or MS could try this? At least get a resolution bump, maxed AF, higher AA for the new hardware.

e.g.

PS4 BF4 or 5 = 900p/60fps

PS4.5 BF4 or 5 = 1080p/60 FPS + better AA and/or better AF

Though I'm not sure if they should do "exclusives" locked to the "PS4.5/Xbox One point Five".

Maybe throw in built in mics on the PS4/X1 revision, too since the New 3DS has a built in NFC, Eye Tracking, Additional Buttons and Nub/Nip other than the improved SoC.

No, these brands are pretty much selling on brand name, I don't think they can work with changing things up with "The New PS4" or whatever.

Although I won't lie, it does seem tempting to make the consoles less obsolete years from now.

It's a sensible idea- it would ensure consoles don't become obsolete as soon as they do these days. That said, console RnD is ridiculously expensive, especially the way Sony and Microsoft do it, and I highly doubt they would be able to do it in a way that is economically viable.

It's a retarded practice that has only hurt Nintendo.

@charizard1605:

I don't think they're gonna require much by adding more gpu shader units and slightly increasing clockspeeds of either GPU or CPU (or both). AFAIK on res/aa/effects.. that's more of a GPU flex.

Sony/MS may not have to spend so much like on a whole new custom architecture and I'd assume won't be much since x86 is pretty common and still being pursued and developed by AMD. Not exactly an esoteric SoC.

I doubt throwing in an array of mics on the console would require much R&D either (Kinect/Eye mics do this already I think).

I'm fine either way; if they do or don't. It just made me wonder why Sony and MS haven't done it while Nintendo has.. twice.

PSP might be the closest thing in comparison to the DSi/N3DS by getting a 100% boost of CPU (firmware) and double the system RAM (PSP 1000 to 2000). I don't think there was a title that segmented the userbase tho. AFAIK just faster load times or maybe slightly better performance with the games near the handheld console's EOL.

this is basically what I am hoping for. I gladly pay 150 bucks more to get a better GPU to have my games run at 1080p/60fps. Others who don't care still have the chance to play on lower resolutions. Just don't make games exclusives to the PS4.5.

@soethi6:

Maybe 3 years from now they could release that for $ 349 and with 1TB HDD while the older 500GB PS4 models would be at $ 249.

Wonder what they'd call it tho. PS4 FHD (Full HD)?

Or maybe just be hush hust about and just call it the PS4 Slim (but has better hardware inside).

They are already doing this when they made the PS4/XBone.
They're minor steps up from the older hardware for which games are still being made.

If you're going to spend $400 twice, why not just get a PC?

It would be nice if consoles had expandable ram or graphics like the N64 did. I don't support companies releasing upgraded consoles at full price, though.

Sony and Microsoft have already been doing that, unless you don't want to believe the Slim Models exist.

Heh. That's why I also mentioned 350 for the new one and 250 for the older one (and less storage). :D Also hoping the upgraded ver. won't be 399 :)

I don't think the PS3 Slim or the later 360 models had games upgraded (resolution bump, better textures, better aa, etc.) over the older models.

@j2zon2591: Neither did the DSi. Did you forget that the Xbox 360 Slim models came with Kinects? That's about the same thing as DSi, as DSi added the Camera and Digital Shop.

N3DS is a different story since it does seem to boost performance for games like Monster Hunter 4 and Smash Bros, but Only ONE game so far is said to be ONLY N3DS exclusive and that's Xenoblade Chronicles 3D. Everything else is playable on a regular 3DS. It's the same as certain games on Xbox 360 that require Kinect OR can USE Kinect but not required.

Different case since Slim Models don't divide the userbase. It's the same spec, plays the same games.

New 3DS, on the other hand, has its exclusive game.

Except, I just explained the similarities between New 3DS and 360 Slim that came with Kinects.

Of course not everyone of them came with Kinects, but that was the big push for Microsoft back then. The Kinects DID divide the audience between games that are Kinect Compatible or not.

No one gave a crap because Kinect was garbage, but the concept was still there. ALSO 360 Slims had Wifi Adapters in them while regular 360s didn't.

These things have already been going on, just none/some of you haven't noticed till just now.

A very interesting analogy. Thanks you. I still think it's not the same if it were to have the boosted image quality of what I've mentioned for those specific titles (Kinect games =/= 1080p/60fps BF4 or 5 with better AA and AF). But you are right. That stems out from what I initially presented.

I'd also be surprised if there were only to be 1 game that can't be played on the older 3DS. but as you say, N3DS is a different story.

Thanks again!
