Poll Nintendo or Sony - greatest console company of all time? (116 votes)

Nintendo 63%
Sony 37%

I'm gonna go with Sony. Nintendo has a legacy and a rich history and enormous contributions to the industry. Sony though made consoles more than just for kids. Look at how dominant PS1 and PS2 were when during those gens. The tech was amazing for their time. The PS3 fumbled in the beginning, but Sony still managed to recover and set the tone for this gen. Now the PS4 is back to Playstation domination. The Wii did indeed sell like crazy, but that has all fizzled now. I still think Nintendo has a chance for next gen now that their back is against the wall. What do you think, SW?

i would go with sony...nothing really flopped for them. Sure ps3 blew it, but they still managed to bring in about 80+ million users in the end while also bringing us uncharted series, the last of us, infamous series, resistance series and some indie gems like journey. can't be that bad.

i have no liked nintendo since the wii and to some degree the ds.

Nintendo will always be the greatest gaming company to ever exist, and Mario will always be the greatest gaming mascot.

Sony has a gaming division. Nintendo is a gaming company. The only other large player still dedicated to gaming and gaming alone nowadays is Valve.

Between the two, Sony. Nintendo has been my secondary console since the Genesis days. This gen (PS4, Wii-U), I'm not even considering buying their system.

Sega is a good runner up due to Genesis, Game Gear and Dreamcast.

Can't vote, both have been fantastic in their own ways and at different times. And both have anchored the industry at one time or another.

This is an unfair question. You shouldn't put us in the position to make this decision. Sony.

Well I think Sony was also a shitload more impressive, considering they basically came in as a complete unknown into a market dominated by Nintendo, and proceeded to break every bone in its body and make a throne out of its corpse for two generations.

Last generation they stumbled badly, but they got up and currently they are in a pretty strong position with Nintendo and Microsoft just seemingly shooting themselves in the foot time and time again.

Gotta be the big N because no matter how well one of their consoles does they always seem to have some of the best games ever on their systems.

NES: Super Mario Bros 3

SNES: Super Mario World,ALTTP,Super Metroid,Chrono Trigger

N64: Ocarina of Time,Majoras Mask,Goldeneye,Mario 64

Gamecube:Wind Waker,Metroid Prime,RE4

Wii:Galaxy 1 and 2

Voted Nintendo. If it wasn't for Nintendo backstabbing Sony, The PlayStation as it is we known today would have not existed and it's all thanks to Nintendo for making it happen. Nintendo was giving a gift from the Heavens from Sony and they turn it away, Sony wanted revenge and Nintendo created there own worst enemies.

PS4 Forever.

Sony isn't actually a gaming company. They're an electronics conglomerate. This means that Nintendo wins by default.

Is there a reason you didn't include the 8 bit and 16 bit sales numbers? Did you just start it from when sony entered the console race? Cause forget sales (although they were great), the 2 best nintendo home consoles were the nes and snes, and they're not listed

This is a hard choice for me but I'd actually go with nintendo despite the ps1 and ps2 being such beasts. Ninty had the nes, snes, n64, gamecube. and that's not even counting the handhelds.

If I had to rank every main console company by tiers it would be.

  1. Nintendo
  2. Sony
  3. Sega
  4. Atari
  5. Colecovision
  6. xbox

Nintendo no contest. The amount of genre pushing games they've made is astonishing. Sony doesn't put in the time or money into r&d like that. Every major change in games put to practical use is a result of nintendo. The only other company that compares is sega. Sony isn't in the same league.

And this nullifies the sales of these two consoles?

We are comparing Nintendo's console history as a whole with Sony's console history as a whole. Omitting the NES and SNES, which are arguably the most important Nintendo consoles of them all, paints a very inaccurate and misleading picture.

Nintendo, there would be no Playstation if it wasn't for Nintendo. Literally the PS1 was supposed to be the SnesCD. Too bad the SNES was the last truly great Ninteno console.

Toughie.

Playstation consoles have been my favorite each gen since Sony hit the market. The PS1 was a narrow win for me, but the PS2 and to a lesser extent the PS3 blew out Nintys offerings. And even though the Wii U is currently running circles around the PS4 games wise (not a tough task), this won't last for long at all.

But then you have Nintendos killer history in the market and the fact that as a game developer they walk all over their competition... even some of the most well known old school 3rd party companies had some of their best outings on Nintendo consoles. Nintendo consoles served as the birth place for so many awesome franchises and innovations/popularizations that we take for granted today.

It's tough for me to imagine the gaming world without Sony, but impossible for me to imagine what would have been without Nintendo.

Personally i would go with Sony. Every single console , even the super problematic PS3 , delivered in the end massive exclusives , cool new technologies etc ..

Sales talking also , PS1 was a super hit considering was Sonys first attempt vs super well established video gaming brands like SEGA and NINTENDO while PS2 destroyed everything. Even PS3 did okish with such a pathetic start and so many problems.

Nintendo lost their touch pretty bad after NES/SNES. Sales ( wii sold for entirely different reason than actually hardware/software and that was controller and motion controls ) , 3rd party support , prematures deaths/life supports ( wii went into life support in 3-4 years while it had 100M userbase lol ) , exclusive losses to Sony ( example Final Fantasy series ) , bad architecture and choices ( N64) drove developers away ... I can go on what Nintendo did wrong all day long.

Anyways , my personal preference goes to Sony for various reasons with the biggest being that every single Sony console delivered in the end massive amount of great exclusives and massive amount of great 3rd party exclusives/timed exclusives/multis. Theres not a single generation that Sony failed to deliver and support even into next gen unlike any other company ever did and thats why i vote Sony.

In the end of the day though is what YOU prefer or YOU had/have more fun with.

Nintendo easily. You do realize that many people have very fond memories of Nintendo handhelds as well right? It's not just about home consoles. Nintendo has easily had a far greater impact on the industry. There franchises are synonymous with gaming like Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Pokemon, etc. The same cannot be said for Sony even if I currently like their recent output better than Nintendo.

PS1 and PS2 was cool.

PS3 Sony had atleast some cool exclusives.

PS4 Sony is........................lol.

Nintendo has been usually consistent, and while i can definitely agree they rehash waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, etc, they deliver actually good unique hardware and fun unique experiences.

I don't need to. Just throw in, what, 62 million NESs and 49 million SNESs, and you're good to go.

Assuming you want to throw in handhelds, that's another 120 million Gameboy/Color, 84 million Gameboy Advance, 153 million Nintendo DS, and let's hold off on 3DS because you're not counting current gen stuff, it looks like. I guess adding handhelds would also entail adding some 80 million PSPs on there.

NINTENDO simply because they have been there since the beginning (Gen 1) and SONY have only been into console gaming since gen 5.

Hmm...well part of the sales for the NES was their ironfisted dictatorship of third party devs.
