That's right folks, your favorite hero in green tights Zelda is coming to Mario Kart 8. It seems Zelda has taken time out of his busy schedule to participate in some kart racing.

MOD EDIT:

Confirmed by Nintendo:

Nintendo's confirmed it. For just $8 per pack, or $12 for both of them at once? Holy fucking shit is that amazing value.

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Two new downloadable content packs will take the world of Mario Kart 8 in directions the franchise has never seen before, while significantly expanding game-play options. The packs, which launch this fall and in spring of 2015, and are available for advance purchase starting Aug. 27 at $7.99 each (or $11.99 for both), deliver a ton of new content, including first-time crossover characters like Zelda from The Legend of Zelda franchise and both Isabelle and the Villager from the Animal Crossing series.

In addition to these two new downloadable content packs, a previously announced game update goes live Aug. 27 that adds a variety of new features, including three free Mercedes-Benz cars that players can race: the modern Mercedes-Benz GLA, the 300 SL Roadster from the 1950s and the legendary Silver Arrow of the 1930s. Go tohttp://ninten.do/6181WR6B to view a video of the in-game karts in action.

“More than 1 million Wii U owners in the United States alone are already enjoying the fun of Mario Kart 8,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Mario Kart 8 already includes the largest number of characters, karts and options of any Mario Kart game to date, and these amazing expansion packs give players even more choices.”

Each pack will contain two new cups, each with four courses, which, in total, increases the number of currently available courses by 50 percent. The DLC packs include classic courses like Wario’s Gold Mine from Mario Kart Wii, as well as new courses, some taking place in the worlds of The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing. New vehicles will also arrive with each pack, including the Blue Falcon kart representing the F-Zero franchise in the first DLC pack.

Mario Kart 8 owners who purchase both packs starting Aug. 27 will get access to eight new colors of Yoshi and eight new colors of Shy Guy to race with immediately. To purchase the packs in advance, users with a broadband Internet connection can click the new “Shop” icon in the game or visit the Nintendo eShop on Wii U.

The DLC packs are scheduled to include the following:

Pack 1: The Legend of Zelda X Mario Kart 8 (Release Date: November 2014) - $7.99

3 Characters: Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Zelda

4 Vehicles

8 Courses

Pack 2: Animal Crossing X Mario Kart 8 (Release Date: May 2015) - $7.99

3 Characters: Villager, Isabelle, Dry Bowser

4 Vehicles

8 Courses

Pack 1 + Pack 2 Bundle - $11.99

6 Characters: Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Zelda, Villager, Isabelle and Dry Bowser

As a bonus for purchasing both packs bundled or individually, buyers receive eight new colors for Yoshi and Shy Guy. Those who advance purchase both packs can begin using the Yoshi and Shy Guy characters immediately.

I disagree, it would look pretty fucking weird to have a horse head at the end of a motorbike.

With that said the design of that motorbike is kinda meh, doesn't seem to have any connection to the Zelda universe (from this angle). The only possible connection you could make is to the Dragon King guy in Wind Waker, and that would be a stretch.

I don't recall nintendo ever doing DLC for their games and it's a shame they've gotten involved in it. Still, some of those additions look interesting. Have they added Metroid to the game at all? It would be pretty cool, instead of driving a kart he could just turn into his ball and race around.

#20 Posted by m_machine024 (14867 posts) -

I'm a bit indifferent about the new characters and vehicles but the 8 new courses per pack is a huge deal! Will really bring new life to the game. And the pricing looks ok too.

And TC, I suppose you're joking when saying that's Zelda. ;)

@EJ902:

By "Metroid", I believe you mean "Samus Aran".

And by "he", I believe you mean "she".

And let me guess, she doesn't turn into a ball either?

It's funny that this is the Sheep's idea of good and proper DLC. "DLC is fine only when it's done right." But it's the same type of DLC/microtransactions you see in other games. I have no problem with them doing this as it helps extend the life of a game, but some Sheep were acting like watchful and vigilant protectors of fine taste, and every other third-party game was bringing down the industry with their DLC, and then you see these Meow Meow Peach and Tanooki Mario pictures and laugh at their excitement over it.

This is DLC done right!

#25 Posted by PhazonBlazer (11615 posts) -

@EJ902: But what if Zelda was a girl? That would be crazy!

I was thinking Midna but Epona works as well if you like that sort of thing.

Well, this is good news, I was losing faith after that stupid Mercedes DLC.

But, I won't get DLC just to use characters, they'll need to add new cups into the mix. If they're just going to add characters then it should be free.

I'm really worried though what's to happen to online if you don't pay for DLC, will it not allow you to race if you don't get the DLC? Or will it separate those who have the DLC from those who don't?

If it's $20 for 16 courses (4 cups), that's a good deal for me. I imagine the courses will be remakes of old tracks from previous games, so I'm curious which ones they'll go with. Don't know about the characters, but the courses alone I feel are worth it. Hope people support the DLC because I'd like to see more and more.

If it was for free, maybe I would've liked it a bit more.

And please change the laps for N64 Rainbow Road.

New Super Luigi Bros,if you count that as DLC since it got a stand-alone release

I was saying this the other day, how cool would a mario kart/smash bros mix up be.

#35 Posted by PrincessGomez92 (3482 posts) -

Looks like a good amount of content for each pack. I'm assuming they'll be $10 each.

#36 Posted by yokofox33 (29373 posts) -

I'd rather not pay for these extra characters, but I'll probably fold and get the first pack at least.

Floodgates are open! Looks cool, wonder if Link will have any of his special abilities. He doesn't seem like a banana peel guy to me.

I always wondered why they didn't branch out similar to smash bros.

Uhhh...yeah it is. It's called the Legend of Zelda, and that guy appears on all the box-arts.

While I'm happy about this and will definitely purchase both packs, I'm disappointed that they don't include any battle arenas. Mario Kart 8 already has some great tracks and characters, what it doesn't have yet is some good battle arenas. Battle mode is by far Mario Kart 8's biggest flaw and fixing that should have been the #1 priority with DLC.

#43 Posted by charizard1605 (56065 posts) -

Nintendo's confirmed it. For just $8 per pack, or $12 for both of them at once? Holy fucking shit is that amazing value.

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Two new downloadable content packs will take the world of Mario Kart 8 in directions the franchise has never seen before, while significantly expanding game-play options. The DLC packs are scheduled to include the following:

Pack 1: The Legend of Zelda X Mario Kart 8 (Release Date: November 2014) - $7.99

3 Characters: Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Link
4 Vehicles
8 Courses

Pack 2: Animal Crossing X Mario Kart 8 (Release Date: May 2015) - $7.99

Each pack has 8 new tracks.

$12 for both packs!?
That's damn good!

#47 Posted by lamprey263 (23190 posts) -

@charizard1605: I'm aware, but someone posted above there'll be two packs, so 8 tracks a pack is 16 tracks, and I imagine they'll make cups of 4 tracks each... anyhow, both packs combined is 16 tracks / 4 cups. That's pretty good considering the game itself was 32 tracks / 8 cups. And, as I just saw in the edit, $12 for both, that's pretty good for 50% more content in tracks / cups.

#48 Edited by Basinboy (11059 posts) -

And what if you buy the Amibo figurines? Do those get you any of the DLC?

#49 Posted by commonfate (12252 posts) -

You can make an advance payment for an $8 DLC pack that releases in May of 2015?

WOW

#50 Posted by Big_Pecks (5245 posts) -

Yeah that's actually pretty good price wise. Wish there was more F-Zero though.
