New Xbox Scorpio Console Will Deliver "Really True 4K," Exec Says

Project Scorpio will have graphical fidelity on a level "never seen before" on console, Aaron Greenberg says.

Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro came out last week. Across the fence, Microsoft's Project Scorpio console is slated to arrive in holiday 2017. Now, Xbox executive Aaron Greenberg has discussed the upcoming Xbox console, saying it's capable of delivering "really true 4K."

"This will really bring the most powerful console you've ever seen," Greenberg said at this weekend's Xbox FanFest in Mexico City. "It will bring these really true 4K, really incredible visual games that we've never seen before on the console."

"People who have spent thousands of dollars on a high-end PC are getting that experience. How do we bring that to scale in a console in your living room? That's a big part of what Project Scorpio is about," he added.

Microsoft has said that all of its first-party games will run at a native 4K. "Any games we're making that we're launching in the Scorpio time frame, we're making sure they can natively render at 4K," Microsoft Studios GM Shannon Loftis said in September.

Microsoft announced Project Scorpio at E3 in June, but the company has not offered much in the way of specifics about the console since then. That may not change soon, as Greenberg said Microsoft is saving a good deal of significant reveals about Project Scorpio for 2017.

Earlier this month, Xbox engineering lead Mike Ybarra said Project Scorpio will "of course" support backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 games. The console also plays all Xbox One titles. According to Microsoft, there won't be any Project Scorpio-exclusive games--except for virtual reality titles.

Pricing for Project Scorpio has not been announced, but Microsoft has repeatedly referred to it as a "premium" device, so it likely won't be cheap.

Sony's PS4 Pro, which launched on November 10, sells for $400. Microsoft has said Project Scorpio is more powerful than Sony's console by a significant margin.

Indeed, RDR on 360 looked phenom for such a lack of ram and a system launched in 2005 so RDR2 on Scorpio in 2017...., ZOMG, don't tease me with a good time. :D

Like id Software's lead programmer said, native 4K on Scorpio titles will be a waste. The games will be using current console type settings in order to run games at native 4K. Hopefully we get a 1080p mode with better effects and performance as well.

Bought the Pro on the second day. Will be using this for a year, then I will purchase the Scorpio. This is one strange console generation!

Not all 4k are the same and the PS4 Pro will just fake it till they make it. I have no doubts the Scorpio will deliver "really true 4k" especially when even the Xbox One S in essence is an overall real 4k machine over any PS4 since it includes 4k blu-ray.

The hype is real for the Scorpio but terror and pain lurks in the posts of Sony loyalists.

But on a serious note, non of this makes a difference to current owners of either system.

Yes and no. Even the PS4 Pro's approach to doing 4k upscaling is welcomed. Ultimately we have these 4k TVs that aren't being utilized properly at all. Filling out more of the pixels will simply end up with a better image quality than upscaling 1080p. So any attempt at getting as close to 4k as we can is good for those who own the set.

What developers need to do is utilize multiple graphic options. There should be a 1080p60 option for games on these machines. There is nothing wrong with console games having multiple rendering settings to best fit the display they are being displayed on. If I pick up a PS4 Pro or Scorpio, it would be very nice for that extra power to be visible on a 1080p set.

I'm not talking full graphics settings like we see on the PC. Rather a few core settings that focus on resolution and framerate. A 1080p30, 1080p60, and 4k30 option should be included in pretty much every game. Hell even a 4k60 option if possible. Every setting would have the rendering tweaked accordingly. Some people would be ok with 1080p30 if it meant a visibly better looking game. A lot of gamers would prefer 1080p60 regardless of the hit of graphical quality. And finally, others just want as many pixels as they can get to fill out their TVs.

@davillain: High end PCs only have trouble running 4K games in 60fps at max settings.

Yeah, it will, at current Xbone settings that average from Medium to Low on everything but Textures. Great 4k Experience.
