New Saints Row is set for a Gamescom reveal

Saints Row is a series with outdated humour, tried painfully to be edgy with gameplay that was essentially "I want to Grand Theft Auto", but try hard, setting the dial to 11. Largely still adhering the formula of "follow line, do thing". Archaic, espically in an age of BOTW, where your weapon breaks every 20 seconds.

The game is apparently being rebooted, and will hopefully be more in line with modern expectations, removing CIS white males and being politically minded bringing up colonialism, the police being evil and pressures of being a tumblr user. The gameplay stuff doesn't really matter too much, as long as it's not too difficult.

During next week's Opening Night Live.

It's been a little over two years since publisher THQ Nordic announced a new Saints Row title was "deep in development" at series studio Volition, and finally it seems the silence around the game is about to be broken, if a tantalising new tease is anything to go by.

The tease in question comes courtesy of noted presenter and producer Geoff Keighley, who shared some intriguing art on Twitter earlier today - featuring a heavily graffitied wall adorned with the word 'Rebooting' and, crucially, the Saints' beloved fleur-de-lis emblem.

The same image has now appeared on the official Saints Row Twitter feed and website - just in case there were any lingering doubts about its connection to the series - meaning the only real question left to ask at this juncture regarding what would be the first numbered Saints Row title to release since 2013 is, 'When will we learn more?'.

And it's back to Keighley's Twitter feed for this one - specifically the caption accompanying his original tweet, which read, "5 days until Gamescom on Wednesday. We are 'Bossing' it with our announcements this year." That 'Bossing' obviously being a reference to the name Boss, given to the player-created protagonist in the series.

Keighley completed his tease with a plug for next week's Gamescom Opening Night Live, a two hour livestream event - kicking off at 7pm in the UK/11am PT next Wednesday, 25th August - promising a "new look at this holiday's biggest upcoming video games and what lies beyond". And if that doesn't include a rebooted Saints Row, then consider me officially bamboozled.

Saints Row > post-San Andreas GTA.

I don't understand how this franchise is still around. I've tried most of the games and they're either not for me or I just don't get it. They feel outdated even for games that are outdated and almost bad to a fault... but then again, I think that is perhaps what they are going for?

Never had any form of interest in the series.

Really hoping it will be like Saints Row 2. While I appreciate the tight writing and go-for-broke approach of SR4, I think that was something that can only be done once. SR3, meanwhile, was kind of wavering between one half-baked idea to another.

There's not much to get. Saints Row games are cathartic sandbox fucking around fun. As one reviewer once summed it up:

Saints Row 2 shows a much better understanding of its audience. It is fully aware that most gamers are dickheads, and if you give them any kind of freedom their first instinct will be to abuse it. If you give them guns, they will shoot old ladies. If you give them cars, they will run over old ladies. If you give them aircraft, they will ascend to the highest possible height and hurl themselves out onto an old lady. And if you give them customisable outfits their first instinct will be to take off all their clothes and run around the streets hip-thrusting in the faces of old ladies. If you try to stop them doing all this, they'll hate you for it. Not only does Saints Row 2 not stop you, but it keeps score!

Saints Row sucks now. The first 2 were great but now it is nothing but childish jokes and bad game play.

I had a good time with 4, am certainly keeping my eye on 5.

Even if they aren't amazing, we need more stuff like Saints Row and Just Cause - not everything has to be "mature"

Can't say I've had any fun with this series but hey if this is a reboot I'll keep an eye on it.

I'll take Saint's Row 2 over any GTA. Hopefully this is true.

I'd also like a Saint's Row IV remaster in the same vain as SR The Third.

All I really want is Saints Row 2 get the Remake treatment since 2 was the best in the series anything afterward was all meh.

They better make it similar to Saints Row 2 because if it's more like Saints Row 4 then I don't care at all for this new game.

@madrocketeer: I had more fun with Saints Row 3 than any GTA after San Andreas.

I agree with you on this. Saints Row 2 is still the best in the series. Plus Stilwater is a much better city than Steelport in my opinion. Also Saints Row 2 was better than Grand Theft Auto IV. I remember how disappointed I was with GTA IV and when SR2 came out, I was surprised how incredible that game was. To this day it's still a fun game.

SR was great for its time, especially after GTA began to take itself seriously, but it's waaaay past its time. Tried playing the remaster of the third game and I was like

I may check it out if its a remaster of the second game, just because its my favorite and no decent port of it exists.

Ah, Saints Row, the notorious, bat-shit crazy interpretation of GTA. It might just be worth playing a new Saints Row game while waiting for GTA 6.

Saints Row 2 was the best one by far, hoping it's a remaster of that one.

SR3 was fun but they started to lose sight of what made the series so engaging.

I enjoyed SR1-3. Never bothered with 4..

I wonder if this new one will be more like SR2 or 3.

I loved Sunset Overdrive and I hope Spiderman scratches some of that same itch.

I also loved Sunset Overdrive and Spiderman didn't do much for me.

I enjoyed 2 and 3. Everything after that was crap.

2 was really good, but that's the only game I like in this series.
