Sniper Elite developer Rebellion, which owns comic publisher 2000AD, has announced plans to open up its back catalogue of characters for other studios to use in games, including the comic's most iconic creation: Judge Dredd.

Rebellion co-founder Jason Kingsley made the announcement at the 2000AD 40 Years Of Thrill-Power Festival over the weekend. According to Bleeding Cool, Kingsley also said that the game studio had something big to announce later this year.

Dredd is an incredible character that seems like he'd be a natural fit for videogames but, with few exceptions, the history's a bit of a dismal one. I remember a 2D platformer on SNES that was alright, but the less said of Dredd Vs. Death the better. It would be amazing to see a British studio like Rocksteady or Ruffian taking on Dredd, giving us an open-world version of Mega City One and a Lawmaster to rocket around on.

Rebellion has made a few titles themselves, like the aforementioned Dredd Vs Death and Rogue Trooper, but many other great 2000AD characters have been left untouched - the ABC Warriors, Nemesis, Slaine, the list goes on. Fingers crossed some great games come from this. But yeah: Ruffian doing Dredd. Crackdown with a killer license. Just a thought.

The Film was great (new one) and it would make a fun game.. Hope true as I'd pay some attention to it.

Never cared much for the Stallone movie, and I don't read the comics, but damn, the last movie 'Dredd' was pretty awesome, too bad it never got a sequel. Anyhow, I'd like to see what kind of game they can make. I'm interested. Though, I was hoping now that Sniper Elite 4 is out that they'd work on some Nazi Zombie Army DLC first.

I believe they continued the movie through comic form, although I would be totally for a continuation in video game form, it wouldn't be the first time. Timothy Daltons last appearance as Bond with an original story-line (in loose 8/16bit terms) was James Bond: The Duel. More people outside of the UK will be familiar with the movie Dredd's than the comics.

Not sure i'd want Rebellion handling it, while AVP 2000 is one of the best adaptions, it's later console centric game missed the mark completely.

Judge Dredd Vs Death is although, mostly in capturing the character.

@lamprey: Indeed, the Stallone movie was very avg to me as well, but the one with Mr Urban that came out a few years ago was great. Hopefully the game is able to maintain that dark, gritty style.

The comic books are more black humor than the movie, with Judge Dredd basically Donald Trump if he was cool.

Judge Dredd game with Hotline Miami style would kick ass seriously.

I hope it's like that, but probably not.

I dunno. Do we really need a Dredd game? Halo replaced it for me.

I'll play it if it has a I AM THE LAW-button. Thoight the latest JD movie was pretty great. Should be a character that could work for games. But then again so does Star Wars and look at the all the garbage generated by that franchise.

I actually rather liked the Dredd VS Death game, it felt just like a Time Splitters game.

If it ain't Karl Urban as Dredd in the game, then nope.

Last few games haven't done so well so Rebellion have been more focused on Sniper Elite lately, which I imagine have a quicker turn around. But yeah, i'd love to see a good next- gen Dredd game.

I would much prefer a sequel to the most recent movie as opposed to a game.. The FPS genre is saturated and I highly doubt it will be anything more than a run of the mill fps with Judge Dredd thrown into it.

The idea that we are ignoring the fantastic comic that spans decades and is one of the best things ever created and just talking about the two movies that don't reflect the source material all that well is driving me crazy in this thread. Educate yourselves.

Normally, I'd be totally down for a new Judge Dredd game, but with Rebellion at the helm I'm not so sure.

Hopefully not, that was an atrocious movie. Campy as hell and a typical "90's" movie... but it wasn't Dredd.

Would love to see if Rocksteady were in charge of development. While I'm greatly enjoying Sniper Elite 4 presently (this franchise has been screaming for bigger maps and man does it benefit), they're still a 2nd-tier studio. They're great at nailing the main pillars in SE4 (sniping, bulletcam), but anytime the game has close combat it's awful. A Dread game would involve a lot of close, brutal fighting, and I'm skeptical their pedigree would suffice in an area they've proven themselves lacking in.

So yea, no offense Rebellion. You know how to make a long distance head or nutshot extremely gratifying, but everything else is passable at best. Give it to Rocksteady.

Terrible acting, horrible dialogue, one-liners to the extreme, cheap effects... only something someone who grew up in the 90's can appreciate.

I don't like movies from any specific era. I enjoy movies from specific genres. But keep making assumptions.

Haven't seen the newer movie, but I heard it was better than most 80/90's movie remakes. Now, Robocop was the one that sucked horribly, so it's a good thing they didn't make a game of that.

Kind of like that new Rambo game... What a shit show. Wasn't a fan of the movie, either.

Consider my interest officially piqued. They better get Karl Urban to the voice.

Dredd done very poorly, it won't get a sequel. It continued in comic book form.

Originally (from what I understand) they had a trilogy planned with Judge Death in the sequel.
