Name me your top 5 must own consoles.

Let's say you could only have 5 consoles for the rest of your life, which would they be. If you want you can include handhelds as well.

Mine in no particular order:

1. PS3 with backwards compatibility

2. Super Nintendo

4. Genesis

5. N64

My honorable mentions:

Dreamcast (Great console, but you can find a lot of its library on other consoles.)

PC-Engine/TG-16 (Amazing console if you love Space Shooters, but not enough overall variety like you will find with the Sega Genesis)

This was tougher than I thought. With those above you'd miss out on Metroid Prime, The Last of Us, Mario Galaxy 1&2...decisions decisiosn

With this setup you can take advantage of previous consoles backwards compatibility to get the most out of all 5 consoles. Wii U has Wii and Wii U plus VC games. GCN has a Gameboy Player which adds GBA, and GB games. 360 has Live Arcade, and BC with certain OG Xbox games. PS2 adds PS1, and the SNES has too big of a library and too many gems to miss out on. It would be my luxury pick.

You could always replace the PS2 with a backwards compatible PS3.

Sega Mega Drive (best Sega console)

SNES (plus Gameboy cartridge)

NES (for the huge amount of 80s classics)

Nintendo DS (with GBA compatibility)

and an Xbox since it was the last good console with the best multiplats of its gen

Though I'd rather just get a PC with emulators.

My best consoles were the 360, PS2 and SNES in that order. Once I've those 3, I'm happy. I'd probably add a PS4 to that for the new gen, and can't honestly think of a 5th one that stands out from the rest.

• Wii U - it gives me access to Wii U games, Wii games, and most of the great NES, SNES, N64, and Genesis games
• PS3 (original model) - it gives me access to PS3, PS2, and PS1 games
• Xbox 360 - it gives me access to Xbox 360 games, most of the great original Xbox games, and many great Genesis, Dreamcast, and arcade games
• GameCube - it gives me access to GameCube, GBA, and Gameboy games
• Xbox One - along with the Wii U, this would cover me for the majority of current gen games

With the above combination, the only thing I care about that I would miss out on would be a handful of PS4 exclusives.

Now, given a situation where I could not use the backwards compatiblity of any of the consoles to get multiple consoles in one, my list would be:

• Xbox One - because between the Xbox One and Wii U, I would be covered for the majority of current gen games
• Wii U - see my answer for Xbox One
• N64 - because it is the greatest party console
• SNES - because it is the greatest 2D console
• Xbox 360 - because it is the greatest HD console

3. 360 - Good library, backwards compatibility with Xbox, tons of classics on XBLA
4. DS - Good library + GBA BC
5. Wii - Ok library, GCN BC, Virtual Console

If we're picking due to backwards compatibility, (reasons why some have picked ps3 ) then number 1

1. PC - can play all PC games and can emulate all consoles up to 360\ps3.

Thats it, no interest in any other console as all thier libraries can be emulated well I'm a good PC.

It just isn't the same when emulating. Either the sound is slightly off, or you get glitches in games, especially 3D games.

Amiga 500 would be my number one gaming platform, but it's more like a PC than a console.

I don´t know if a WiiU can be moded, my moded Wii allows me to play all the Nintendo console games, plus all the Gameboy Advance games plus the Gamecube games added to the Wii games.

Playing console games emulated on PC is like Russian Roulette with 5 bullets in the gun. You have a far less chance of getting a game that plays exactly like it would on the real game console. If you have a choice to play all P1, PS2 and PS3 games on a PS3 or a PC, I think most gamers would take the PS3 in a heartbeat.
