I'm well aware of why. But that's a ridiculous reason to call me a sheep. Just take a look at my profile and you'll find I'm not sheep.

I'd rather have a good story with so-so graphics than a bad/unoriginal/etc. story with awesome graphics. :?
Games like Mario or Sonic don't really count, though, because Mario's good even with the save-Princess-Peach story (unless it's the RPGs) and Sonic... they just need to not give Sonic a story altogether. Just plop him into a world and say "run and beat up enemies." XD

I agree completely with what you're saying about Sonic.
Story could suffer because of online capabilities, not graphics.
Graphics can only help storyline and the reason is that story is based on 2 things to be great.
1) Plot
2) Presentation.
In order to have great story, you need to have good plot that's for sure, but what is equally important is how well the story is told. That is presentation, which includes directing, visual, acting, and audio. Good camera angles, good details, good acting, good music that fits the mood, and the pacing. That's why directors are rich even though very often they don't write the script. They are the ones that is telling the story. That is why graphics can only help telling the story, not hurt it. Imagine games like Final Fantasy VII or older games told using current generation graphics and presentation (like higher quality voice acting).
As for reason why I said online capabilities could ruin the story is that many games are starting to focus more of online functions than single player aspects of the game. It is very difficult to have story told during online experiance. How often do you get the same type of story telling you experiance in single player RPG compared to MMORPG? Little Big Planet doesn't take story as importance due to it focusing on online experiance and gameplay.
