It’s game on in China, as Microsoft Corp.’s (MSFT) Xbox One becomes the first entertainment console to hit the market after the end of a 13-year ban.

Microsoft today began taking orders for its new game console from online retailer JD.com Inc. (JD) via Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s (700) mobile-messaging applications. The pair of Chinese Internet companies hold exclusive rights to pre-sell the locally made Xbox One until July 30, JD.com said in a news release. The console is slated to ship nationwide in September.

Microsoft was the industry’s first big player to start production in the country after the Chinese government last year allowed console sales in the new Shanghai free-trade zone and opened up an estimated $10 billion market. The first Xbox didn’t even exist in 2000, when the Communist Party banned game systems over concern they would be bad for kids. It was released a year later.

“The potential market for Xbox in China is huge, there’s a lot of prospects for growth,” said Bill Fan, a Hong Kong-based analyst at China Securities Co. “Tencent could cooperate with Microsoft on games in the future, and Xbox can utilize Tencent and JD.com’s distribution channels to generate more sales.”

MSoft starts the comeback to hold court in generation 8.

There has not been an alternative to consoles piracy in more than a decade. Every market has piracy and China will be no different. It will be interesting to see how much of each console will sell. The partnerships that MSoft has cultivated will help it for sure.

You sounded like you know Chinese and China very well. Have you been there or live there? I lived in China for a good few years due to business related. I can tell you most of them play PC or imported PS2 or PS3 from other places such as Hong Kong but not many interested in MS consoles. Also Sony already translate a lot of games to Chinese for PS3, PSP and Vita in Sony Aisa, so I do not see any advantage MS going to have in China.

No there hasn't, but unlike most places it's widely just not really monitored there like it is anywhere else.

that's likely because most of the extra countries ps4 released in that xbox did not or released a bit later in barely make a difference in overall numbers. There's a few big territories and of course the U.S. is the biggest. ps4 managed to somehow overtake the xbox here which was kind of surprising, especially factoring in all the america-centric advertising MS did such as free games bundled in from the getgo to rapid pricedrops, NFL deals and other cable tv shit.

With all those units they dumped on the market, this comes as no surprise.

Sony set this trend during the PS2 era, getting everybody to flop into the console, and then booming with games later.....then again PS3, and now again PS4. It is a very high precision tactics brought about through dragons of ancient Mesopotamia with attributes of patience and faith. The result? Instilling discipline and keep users from turning themself into the victim.

chinese nerds worship the japanese otaku culture. This will be just another failed battle for the xbone.

Many people that take those polls haven't bought their PS4 yet while others can say that but not buy it. The fact is the PS4 is preferred by more people than the X1.
