Microsoft Corporation’s Xbox One Looks Like a Total Failure
Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) may have a problem on its hands. Not Windows 8, but its latest video-game console, the Xbox One. Based on recent sales data, rival Sony's (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation 4 is significantly outselling Microsoft's offering -- in the U.S., at a rate of 2-to-1.
While a poorly selling Xbox One isn't great for Microsoft, investors in Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA) could ultimately be the ones most exposed.
NPD data shows Sony dominating Microsoft
According to research firm NPD, Sony's PlayStation 4 was the top selling video game console in the US during the month of January, edging out Microsoft's Xbox One. VentureBeat puts the figures at around 280,000 for the PlayStation 4 and 145,000 for Microsoft's Xbox One. On a cumulative, global basis, Sony has sold about 5.1 million PlayStation 4s, while Microsoft has sold 3.4 million Xbox Ones, according to data compiled by VGChartz.
The discrepancy is even more notable in light of the fact that Sony still hasn't released the PlayStation 4 in its home market of Japan. At the same time, Sony seems to be struggling with supply constraints, as many retailers in the U.S. have completely sold out of their allotted shipments.
Moreover, the PlayStation 4 doesn't even really have any video games worth playing. As new consoles, neither the PlayStation 4 nor the Xbox One has a robust catalog of offerings, but with exclusives like Dead Rising and Killer Instinct, Microsoft's Xbox One seems to have the better lineup.
Why is the Xbox One struggling?
There are myriad of reasons to explain why Microsoft's console isn't selling as well as Sony's. But the most significant by far is the price difference -- at $500, Microsoft's console is a full $100 more expensive than Sony's machine.
That $100 difference is likely due to the inclusion of Microsoft's Kinect, an accessory most core gamers (the sorts of people likely to purchase a console early in its life) don't seem to want. At the same time, Microsoft's console is slightly less powerful than Sony's, resulting in marginally better graphics.
Electronic Arts could be the one most exposed
The Xbox isn't really part of Microsoft's core business, so in that respect, the lack of sales shouldn't really have too much of an effect on Microsoft's bottom line. But one company that could see an impact is Electronic Arts.
Titanfall, arguably Electronic Arts' most anticipated game of the year, will be exclusive to Microsoft's Xbox One platform (it will also be available for the PC and the Xbox 360, but the Xbox One version has received most of the focus) There's also Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare, a game that, like Titanfall, will be exclusive to the Xbox One in terms of next-generation consoles.
With a lesser install base, it's possible that both of these games could be a retail disappointment, failing to generate the sales Electronic Arts had been anticipating.
Still early in the console war
That said, it's still early in the console war. Sony's last console, the PlayStation 3, was a retail disappointment early in its life, as consumers struggled with its high asking price. Ultimately, however, the PlayStation 3 was able to close the gap with Microsoft's Xbox 360, as Sony gradually cut the price and delivered a slate of quality exclusives. Maybe Microsoft will be able to pull off something similar.
Nevertheless, at least for now, Microsoft appears to be far behind.

The guy used VGChartz for sale data. That pretty much kills that article right there. Also this is a blog by a biased fanboy.
There were a lot of these type of BLOGS for the PS3 back in 2006 as well. Didn't stop the PS3 to go on and sell over 80 million. Everyone knows the XB1 will sell betteronce the price drops and better games get released.

motley fool is an investor's site, and you know how investor's already feel about Xbox
The same way they feel about the PS4 apparently. Sony investors want Sony to dump the Playstation division to a subsidiary owner as well. Sony said no. Microsoft has also said no. Nuff said.
oh no another console that i will eventually play a bunch of great games on will be in last place oh no!!!
lulz, do you have any idea the number of game systems over the last 20 years i have liked and lost the gen they were in?
if you think not winning a gen means anything i don't know what to tell you.
the genesis, intellevision, dreamcast, turbogfx16, og xbox, playstation 3, 360, colecovision, neo geo, ect, ect, ect... were all great systems that lost their gens so why is it important now?
oh i know why, because to you gaming takes last place over popularity and having your choices validated by the majority.
how sad...
Holy hyperbole batman. One month of NPD numbers means the end of times. I wonder how these journalists got jobs.
I dunno........it seems to be selling extremely well. Soon Titanfall drops......that Halo tv show is in the works. That will be really cool........Xbox Live is the go to online experience - for people that actually care about multiplayer gaming that is. PSN is a cheap knock off..... X1 is the complete package.
Also that article is based off January numbers only......ugh........at a rate of 2 to 1........ok buddy.......then he goes on to quote VGChartz.......haha
Xbox one is a failure... a couple months after it launched lol....
omg ppl r stupid....
Well, I guess im enjoying my failed console more than I have in previous gens since the Nintendo 64 days, and couldn't be more anticipated with its failing future.
XBone isn't looking likely to out sell the PS4 this gen, but it doesn't have to for it to be successful, it merely needs to stay "in the ballpark". The 360 has already done the heavy lifting of getting devs to largely go with simultaneous multiplat releases, instead of the exclusive PS releases we saw in gen 6 with Maybe a port 6-12 months down the line. They have a healthy install base that's growing steadily, and with the architectures so similar I don't see anyone dumping their planned XBone ports quite yet.
That said, the sooner MS ditches the Kinect and get themselves price competitive with the PS4, the sooner they'll close the gap in monthly sales.
Now fool.com is credible when not even a month ago I posted an article that was negative about the PauperStation4 and the Cows said fool.com was a joke..........
SMH Sony Fan continue to be the clowns of SW.
Too bad The One has been out for a decade and has no chance at catching Sony..........
There is no way in hell that Microsoft will be able to recover from their mistakes. This gen is in the bag for Sony.
I expect Sony to sell over 100.000.000 PlayStation 4's, meanwhile the Xbox will probably be at 35.000.000 at best
You mean like Sony with the PS3 last gen?
Sony is just taking back what was their's from last gen. Sony did everything wrong and came back to pass the 360. I don't see how they will let MS back into the race.
I don't care if it's VGChartz, the domination of PS4 over X1 is amazing & Japan is about to launch the PS4 which will make it even worse for MS. The Europe numbers are what's amazing, 57,000 PS4 vs 12,000 X1s sold. Wow!

Why could Sony still sell as many PS3s as MS did 360s with a year late start & priced $200 higher? Because people like & respect Sony & like their gaming consoles. MS makes a console that is only $100 more & is released at the same time & they get their Butts handed to them by Sony. How many threads were there over last gen on here where Lems said those were lame excuses as to why Sony was behind? 1000s of them where Lems trashed Cows because we said Sony was behind by a little because of the major advantages MS had. Well look Dumb F Lemmings, it's true.
Poor lems, even the mainstream media is picking up on the flop that is the Xbone. Motley Fool is an investor website and you know MS' investors feel about Xbone division already. This looks like the WiiU all over again. Mainstream media reporting it's a flop and its fanboys denying it. Better start thinking how to jump ship lems. Titanfall won't save the Xbone. It's a multiplat and I just got done playing a match in the beta and I don't own an Xbone. Expecting droves of people to spend $500 to play a multiplat is nothing but wishful thinking at this point.
Now i am all for Sony power, but Xbox One is still selling well let's not forget that. MS is doing just fine. Just calm down people

i really want Sony to succeed, but competition is good aswell. Hopefully Nintendo will continue to release good games and MS will realise they aren't doing us any favors atm

that's because Sony was busy feeding PS4 off to the other 49 countries. If Sony went all out on North America, the result would've not been pretty for XBONE.....
lol sony fanboys have no lives and already bored out of there minds with knack which complete trash along with killzone 4 which everyone was FORCED to buy (killzone is/was never a triple A title judging by how bad kz3 did in sales compared to 2 plus sonys ONLY fps game since the rest tanked ) cause there was nothing on the damn console to play besides call of duty part 28 lol. Driveclub is delayed till god knows when so ur stuck with those 2 shitty games lol.
Infamous 3 looks boring as hell. All footage they've shown is just the main character shooting red spit balls at the A.I. who auto aim at u or that shitty baby whip which looks boring & far from next gen gameplay. Only things you can blow up so far are those stupid black bridges/ black pillars where A.I. is just waiting for u to blow them up lol & cars which we've seen before. Saints Row 4 with its super powers looks FAR better in gameplay/super hero powers then boring infamous 3 lol
It all comes down to is the games & sony has a shitty lineup so far & they haven't won jack shit yet lol.
So much lem tears in this post.
