Well then..

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/n...oJxynWdD3kHY0M

A feature that would allow retail Xbox One units to become developer kits is no longer planned, according to Microsoft.

Xbox Advanced Technology Group's Martin Fuller said there are "no plans" for the feature, which would allow developers to debug and create games without additional Microsoft-supplied hardware that was introduced alongside Microsoft's ID@Xbox scheme last August.

Why? This was one of the big features they announced last year. Why reverse? I didn't see anything about the reason.

From the link in the OP

"We were in the early stages of Xbox One looking at the idea of a retail kit that could be turned into a development kit, and vice versa," he told Digital Spy and other attendees at Develop conference in Brighton.

"In the end, although that was a very admirable goal, it hasn't happened unfortunately. Can't tell you the specifics of exactly why not."

When asked to elaborate on whether the feature would arrive eventually, Fuller replied: "As far as I'm aware there are no plans. I'm not aware of the reason why we didn't manage to do that."

Who knows what kind of 3rd party stuff they license out for their dev kits. There is a reason why dev kits are usually more expensive, and it's not just because the hardware is a bit more beefy and robust.

Like I said in the earlier post, that comment doesn't confirm much. They *probably* haven't cancelled it but it seems like there might be some heavy changes to the original idea. We'll have to wait and see. I have a feeling they'll talk about it at Gamescom like hey did last year...

SWs should probably keep the bashing for when something is clarified then. All seems pointless right now.

Like the PS4 too. The Xbox One is hard to crack because every game is installed on the HDD unlike on the PS4.

[UPDATE] Microsoft has released a statement on the matter, saying that it has not in fact scrapped the plan to allow all Xbox One retail units to be used as development kits.

There was someone else that posted the updated statements in this thread as well. Guess he was ignored.

Microsoft says they didn't pull another 180, despite headlines you might have seen today on various gaming news sites. The company still plans to add dev-kit functionality to retail Xbox Ones, they say.

Something like that would be a security nightmare. Giving development access to every owner is a disaster waiting to happen.

With dev kits, there are NDAs, contracts, policies, rules, etc.

None of that happens when you BUY and console.

Whats to stop people from breaking the system wide open?

Thats like giving pirates the keys to the building and politely asking them not to steal lol

This isn't even something XB1 gamers really cared about to begin with, yet this fool brings it to SW and it once again backfires on the moron. lmao!! Then when Microsoft actually comes out and says the Sony fanboy sites is completely wrong, cows try to damage control it. lol!!

You do realize that the use of Microsoft's dedicated server is strictly up to the developers and not Microsoft right? If a developers doesn't want to use their dedicated servers, there's nothing M$ can do about it. Microsoft offers free dedicated server to all developers. If you thought every developer would use them, they you seriously are living in Fantasy Land. Get your facts straight.

So they decided not to go with a feature that A) 90% of gamers would not be interested in, they want to play games not make them and B) would have made Piracy on the console a lot easier.

and this is a bad mark against MS how?
