With the UI, the apps, the cable box integration, kinect functionality, XBL, it's already an amazing piece of equipment. All they had to do was make the specs comparable to the PS4's and you would have the ultimate console.
It will still be a great console but it could have been untouchable even with the $500 price tag.
Take Kinect. Throw it out. Invest that money into specs. Day one.
I like Kinect for it's non gaming features
Like what, honestly? And is it worth the amount of money that it's adding to the console for you?
Kinect at launch, not comprehensive, and stolen from that other forum:
Battlefield 4: Headtracking used for leaning and looking around inside vehicles. Voice commands.
Crimson Dragon: Controller used for movement, Kinect used for leaning and 'rolling'. Voice commands used for companion AI dragons. All done from couch.
D4: Voice commands for conversations with NPCs. Tracks posture and emotion. Can be done from sitting position.
Dead Rising 3: Voice commands attract or distract zombies.
Fantasia: Music Evolved: Kinect-driven rythm game.
Fighter Within: Kinect-driven fighting game (IMO, looks like s**t)
Forza 5: Head tracking in cockpit.
Just Dance 2014: Kinect-driven dancing game. Same as previous iterations.
Kinect Sports Rivals: Kinect-driven action game. Wave racing free/available at launch.
Plants Vs Zombies: Unknown
Project Spark: This game is basically a game builder. Kinect can be used to record actions for NPCs somewhat like MoCap-light
Ryse: Voice commands to AI companions
Zoo Tycoon: Used to interact with animals physically and verbally
Zumba Fitness: Kinect-driven fitness game.
Xbox Fitness: Kinect-driven fitness application. Monitors progress through video workout programs like P90X and Insanity. _________
Then there's the UI control, Skype, profile switching and on and on and Ariston.

The specs are done cooked and out of the oven, but it's very likely a $400ish Kinectless Xbone is coming off the meat train next year if sales don't go their way.
True, they did the hard part. They only had to put in a decent piece of hardware and game over... now this bullshit, x1 preorder canceled, day one PS4 instead. Idiots.

MS used their own SHAPE IP i.e. X1's SoC has 47 MB of SRAM with ~32 MB allocated to the GPU.
If X1 bombs, MS shouldn't have entered the chip IP business. MS' SHAPE IP (some DSP type solution) is their own CELL mess.
Kinect actually seems a lot better than I thought and after seeing the fitness app it actually blew me away a bit just how good it was. I'm still gonna wait at least 6 months despite it having some nice looking games but I just want to see how everything pans out and as I do most of my gaming on PC I'm in no hurry.
If they did what you suggest TC, it would be more like $600 not still $500. Also, regardless of price, if there are no games to play after 3-4 years then there is no value in the system.
