Virtual Fighter is often considered to be the deepest 3D fighting game, and deepest fighting game outright..

but in terms of 2d fighters, what would you say has the most technical gameplay

is it Mortal Kombat 9, King of FIghters 13, Street Fighter IV, Guilty Gear, Killer Instinct? etc.

this isn't which fighter you enjoy more, but which one do you consider to have the deepest mechanics

Guilty Gear, street Fighter IV > the rest

I would say that KoF is deep but I've always felt that the games got more needlessly complicated with each iteration.

I "technical" gameplay, from counting, hitboxes, Invulnerability Animations, Cancelling.

Its complicated but theres definately nothing deep about it.

I don't know what you mean by "deep".

Do you mean what insane combos you can do or what? Cause pretty much all Fighting Games these days are pretty deep.

Street Fighter 4 isn't even remotely as deep as say Street Fighter Alpha 3, Capcom vs. SNK 2, or even Street Fighter III: Third Strike. Good game yes, and SF4 has depth yes, but not deep in comparison to previous Capcom fighters.

Capcom "dumbed it down" and the popularity went up. If you are looking for depth, that's not the best place to start. It's a good place to start if you are looking for a very popular fighting game, but that popularity came at great cost. I won tourneys with that game. Eh.

Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct are lol worthy choices with regards to depth (in terms of fun, hell yeah though).

KOF is good franchise to look at as well. Obviously, Guilty Gear is another deeper one.

I gave some examples in my post above. I couldn't answer that question in a post in SW (rather better discussion about fighters at a fighting forum), but I did narrow down candidates like SF Alpha 3, SFIII: Third Strike, Guilty Gear, etc.
