Ooop

Microsoft will shut down the Xbox Entertainment Studios, ending an ambitious foray into original video programming.

The Santa Monica studio, with its estimated 200 employees, will be shuttered as Microsoft focuses on strengthening its core videogame business. The move is part of Microsoft’s company-wide restructuring announced on Thursday morning, which will see the elimination of up to 18,000 jobs in the next 12 months.

Chief Executive Satya Nadella signaled the change in a lengthy memo to Microsoft staff that expressed support for the Xbox and its importance to the company — but omitted any reference to original television programming.

“The single biggest digital life category, measured in both time and money spent, in a mobile-first world is gaming,” Nadella wrote a week ago. “We are fortunate to have Xbox in our family to go after this opportunity with unique and bold innovation. Microsoft will continue to vigorously innovate and delight gamers with Xbox.”

Absent was any mention of Xbox Entertainment Studios, a division it created when it hired longtime CBS entertainment president Nancy Tellem in September 2012. Her mandate at the time was to make entertainment content that could only be found on the Xbox Live online platform.

Xbox Entertainment Studios fit with Microsoft’s plan to dominate the living room through its game console. But the unit has struggled to deliver on its promise.

Sources paint a picture of a disorganized studio that struggled to close deals and lacked a fully fleshed-out business model.

Notably, this shut-down was not mentioned in Nadella's memo

Wasn't it the TV stuff for xbox?

"Sources paint a picture of a disorganized studio that struggled to close deals and lacked a fully fleshed-out business model."

Seems to sum up the old xbox division pretty well

Already a thread regarding the Halo production which has not been confirmed by MS nor trade publications, Variety, Show business, or Back stage to no longer be in Production.

Damn the terrible news just keeps coming in for lems. I thought MS was too rich to downsize studios and it was only bankrupt Sony that was capable of letting people go. I seem to remember lems mentioning the imminent shutdown of Sony a few months ago when a handful of employees left ND.

Ouch, NPD is today as well. it's really gonna be a rough day for lems if that pre-NPD damage control statement they made yesterday is anything to go by.

So, people complained when they started putting a focus on entertainment, and now that they are winding that down and focusing more on games people are acting like its a bad thing?

Honestly then its not a bad decision. The original XB1 concept was a mess with no focus. The problem for MS going forward is that the console will always underpowered vs the PS4 no matter how many games you shovel out. It wouldn't shock me if the XB1 had a rather short life-expectancy. (ie closer to 5 than 10 years)

@misterpmedia: Wow, you actually posted GOOD NEWS about Xbox One. I'm shocked. This is actually the BEST NEWS I've ever seen you post about XB1. Thank you for this information. Looks like Microsoft will use the extra money they save on making more exclusive XB1 games and new IP's.

This is actually GREAT NEWS. They aren't focusing on TV Show anymore, they are focusing on games. Did you even read the whole article? I'm sure we'll still get the Halo series though. That's already in production. The place for TV Shows (Marvel's Powers) is the PS4 it seems. Not sure how Sony can even afford doing that crap.

so here we have a studio:

  • two years old
  • wasn't making games
  • is a disorganized mess
  • couldn't collaborate
  • wasn't setting future plans and goals for itself

what are MS and gamers losing again?

looks like they were supposed to be more a TV/movie kind of media studio to make content for Xbox Live and they couldn't even deliver on that end

Shame for those early adopters who were definitely down for some original programming to complement their TV box/console. Gotta sting. This console definitely had no clear direction lol.

What's stopping them focusing on both equally? They got loadsamoney.

Oh yeah, I remember, they messed up the reveal and everyone got a bad first impression as a consequence. Now this has to be sacrificed at the altar of Satya Nadella.

It's awesome when a video game company closes it's doors and takes competition off the market eh?

all of us who like the playstation brand better be prepared to pay out our ass for the next console if the xbox brand does die.

If you like gaming on your current fan boy choice, whichever that may be, then you better support the whole industry or you'll be paying $800 bucks for your next fan boy piece of plastic. Moron

All this crappy talk about lack of competition bringing out the worst in Sony and we have the one time were Sony barely had any competition (the PS2 era) they killed it with games. I fail to see your crappy logic. If Sony starts charging $800 for a console then I believe some other company like Google, Apple or Samsung will come in to occupy the vacuum. There's no reason to support a mediocre console like the Xbone so that "teh industry" will stay alive. Good competition should stay alive and weak competition deserves to die.

I see things positively, unlike some people on here. Why waste money on something people aren't interested in. Sure it's sad that a few more people has to lose their jobs no doubt. In the end this will be best for business. Where I work there are layoff every year, so I'm used to seeing it.

Kinect isn't dead and neither is Cloud. Yeah, a good portion of TV is dead on XB1 now, but not on the PS4. So you have that to look forward to.

Microsoft has contacted us to confirm that Halo: Nightfall will continue production. You'll find the official statement below. "... Nancy Tellem, Jordan Levin and some of the XES team will stay on and remain committed to original programming already in production like the upcoming documentary series 'Signal to Noise' whose first installment takes on the rise and fall of gaming icon Atari and of course, the upcoming game franchise series 'Halo: Nightfall,' and the 'Halo' Television Series which will continue as planned with 343 Industries. Xbox will continue to support and deliver interactive sports content like 'NFL on Xbox,' and we will continue to enhance our entertainment offering on console by innovating the TV experience through the monthly console updates. Additionally, our app partnerships with world-class content providers bringing entertainment, sports and TV content to Xbox customers around the world are not impacted by this organizational change in any way and remain an important component of our Xbox strategy. "

Of course it will. It's Halo.

Overall probably a good thing, but does go to show just how messed up the entire Xbox division was. Hopefully they are getting this all straightened out.

The single biggest digital life category, measured in both time and money spent, in a mobile-first world is gaming,” Nadella wrote a week ago.

Shame for those early adopters who were definitely down for some original programming to complement their TV box/console. Gotta sting. This console definitely had no clear direction lol.

Also: >mobile-first.. hmm..

There wasn't any early adopters looking for TV programs. Gamers spoke loud and clear about that. You were one of them against TV. lol!! Now you're talking about early adopters who wanted it. LMAO!! Stupid troll who tried to post more bad news about XBox One, but failed miserably yet again. Gaming first. LOL!! Even more exclusive games in 2015 & 2016. Can't be disappointed about that.
