3DS had room for pricedrop, the chance of monopolizing Japan by taking out PSV (handheld land) as well as lots of worried 3rd parties with titles in development.

Wii U is already selling at a loss and Iwata's operating income goal for this FY is very ambitious. It's a tough call imo.

Simply posting numbers of a 7:1 install base difference is boring.  Its much funnier when you have a visual representation of just how badly the Vita is doing :P.

What's the cheapest 360 bundle, 149.99-199.99? That is what wiiu should cost. Until then it'll sell 23 units per month.

Yes, Nintendo really screwed things up. They rushed the Wii U out while leaving the Wii (their most successful console ever, mind you) to rot just because third parties and analysts kept pushing them to make an HD console. Now the Wii U seems to be going nowhere and they don't have new Wii software to sell that could keep the whole console side of things profitable. Even Sony, dumb as they are, kept the PS2 going well into the first half of this generation. You could kind of see how Nintendo were going to screw up their best selling console ever when they stopped even bothering with the Virtual Console and Wiiware. Nintendo were perfectly capable of carrying the Wii by themselves for years and years, but they panicked and did what third parties wanted them to do way too early. Now the Wii U will inevitably lose whatever third party support those companies may have promised and Nintendo will have to drag the machine through an entire (and premature) generation... An HD console with HD development costs. This thing is going to backfire and it's going to be ugly.

And it's not like Sony and Microsoft are going to do any better. Launching new consoles in the midst of a worldwide recession is an incredibly dumb move, and they did it just to keep up with Nintendo's now failing new console! The right move was to keep all three consoles going for a few more years until the economy got better. Meanwhile, they should have tried to penetrate emerging markets which are actually, you know, EMERGING now. Latin America, India, China, Russia and a couple of countries in Africa are growing at 5 to 6 percent each year but, instead of selling 360s, Wiis and PS3s to those growing markets, they are now going to try to sell new and more expensive hardware to markets that are either stagnant or going downhill. 

This is an incredibly stupid industry that got way too lucky for a couple of decades. Luck, as it always does, turned into arrogance, and that arrogance is going to bite them in the ass really hard.

Again, Nintendo can turn things around as of this time, due to the fact that it's been THREE (two since this is Japan) FREAKING MONTHS since Wii U released. Not like the Vita where it's been almost a year.

Did you also forget that the PS2 was widely loved? It makes sense on why Sony would still support that early in the PS3's life-cycle (see: God of War II and Rogue Galaxy).

Again, agree. Wholeheartedly, even. All because Nintendo fell into the whole "hardcore" trap, that all of the Wii's naysayers set for the company. It's like Nintendo couldn't wait to show off a new HD console to the world for the sole purpose of shutting people up. Not only has it resulted in the Wii U's troubling start, it even reared its ugly head in the past couple of years for the Wii and the 3DS' launch. To abandon a market that, in my opinion, still had quite a lot of room to grow to play the industry's game of catch-up represents the total opposite of the principles Nintendo thrived on with the DS/Wii dominance. And now, it's Nintendo's turn to face the challenges of HD gaming development, which has not gotten off to the best of starts.

I've seen all of this coming myself, so it's not like what you're saying comes off as a shock to me. Still, to see this in spite of some of the cards Nintendo has already used when it comes to big name times (Mario, Monster Hunter in Japan) is nevertheless very telling. Nintendo's franchises will likely keep the system afloat in a GameCube-like manner at the end of the day, but I still don't see this being a very pleasant sight in a about a year from now, since it's already looking bleak as we type this. And with no mass market appeal either at the moment or coming down the line, it's hard to see things getting any better in any region.
