Media Create Japan Sales December 19-25: PS Vita Is Doomed

I have often had that thread title before, except for the 3DS. It has always been used ironically, to poke fun at the 3DS is doomed brigade, as the 3DS has continued to dominate the software and hardware charts. Unfortunately, this time, it's not been used with such brevity. While the PS Vita had a great week as far as absolute numbers are concerned, selling over 70,000 units, it failed to outdo the 3DS again. Heck, it failed to outdo the 3DS. its own predecessor the PSP, the PS3 or even the Wii, which has been selling sluggishly in Japan for over a year now. On the software side, it was even more depressing, with no PS Vita title managing to even chart.

On the other side of the fence, Nintendo dominated the charts, software and hardware, again.

I'm posting here just to get my thoughts spread around throughout the different topics related to this issue.

The prevailing thought around these forums seems to be that Vita is doomed.

And all signs are pointing to just that, with a sharp drop-off in the second week and a launch inferior to the 3DS, despite being released at a time where Vita should have been surpassing the 3DS because it's the holiday season.

There are two lessons that Sony still hasn't learned here:

1. Selling expensive systems at a heavy loss ($60 for Vita) does not make profit for the company

2. Better hardware always means fewer console sales because the public associates high prices with inaccessibility

PS Vita is looking to floip harder than the Atari Jaguarxmasdrink

The Atari Jaguar sold less than 250,000 units...

Even if the Vita is a flop, it's not that bad of a flop.

KONAMI, greenlight Castlevania 3DS as 3DS is currently a healthy platform.

It seems like Capcom foresaw this by putting a mainline RE as well as MH on 3DS.

Give the Vita time, it's just a baby at this point. Looking at the games list, man Kirby is doing better in Japan then it did in the west, but that may be due to Battlefield 3.nintendoboy16

The Psvita needs to pick it up qicker than the 3DS did if it wants any hope of keeping up with the 3DS in sales.

I sure The Vita will gain some steam. Sony should get some big exclusive hits to push it.

Indeed. Especially when it comes to 3rd parties. By the time Vita is released throughout both Europe & the U.S., the 3DS will be having a huge install base lead while PS Vita will probably only reach a little over 1 million. And who are 3rd party developers going to make more games for? The handheld with a very high install base, or the one with the worst install base?
