I have often had that thread title before, except for the 3DS. It has always been used ironically, to poke fun at the 3DS is doomed brigade, as the 3DS has continued to dominate the software and hardware charts. Unfortunately, this time, it's not been used with such brevity. While the PS Vita had a great week as far as absolute numbers are concerned, selling over 70,000 units, it failed to outdo the 3DS again. Heck, it failed to outdo the 3DS. its own predecessor the PSP, the PS3 or even the Wii, which has been selling sluggishly in Japan for over a year now. On the software side, it was even more depressing, with no PS Vita title managing to even chart.

On the other side of the fence, Nintendo dominated the charts, software and hardware, again.

Full numbers follow:

I'm posting here just to get my thoughts spread around throughout the different topics related to this issue.

The prevailing thought around these forums seems to be that Vita is doomed.

And all signs are pointing to just that, with a sharp drop-off in the second week and a launch inferior to the 3DS, despite being released at a time where Vita should have been surpassing the 3DS because it's the holiday season.

There are two lessons that Sony still hasn't learned here:

1. Selling expensive systems at a heavy loss ($60 for Vita) does not make profit for the company

2. Better hardware always means fewer console sales because the public associates high prices with inaccessibility

I am more depressed that the 360 has been outselling the PS2 as of late. :(

Oh wow, I'm so thoroughly late this week :P But yeah, this is very worrying. I've said it time and again, we need a strong Sony in the handheld market or Nintendo gets complacent. Moreover, after everything that Sony did right with the Vita, I do NOT want to see it fail. I just don't.

There were over a hundred new PS2 games released this year. The system is still big in Latin America, East/Southeast Asia and India, and Japan of course.

PS Vita is looking to floip harder than the Atari Jaguar

Give the Vita time, it's just a baby at this point. Looking at the games list, man Kirby is doing better in Japan then it did in the west, but that may be due to Battlefield 3.

The Atari Jaguar sold less than 250,000 units...

Even if the Vita is a flop, it's not that bad of a flop.

KONAMI, greenlight Castlevania 3DS as 3DS is currently a healthy platform.

It seems like Capcom foresaw this by putting a mainline RE as well as MH on 3DS.

Like I said in the other thread, it isn't game over yet but it doesn't bode well for the PSV. If it drops even worse in the following weeks it will be looking bleak. Sony can't drop the price, they really have nothing to encourage hardware purchases. Its going to perform even worse in NPD after its initial launch month. Also, all the people that said last week "lol it was only 320k in 2 days" the PSV sold 390k in 9 days, while the 3DS sold 480k in 7 days. Inb4 (i think) AtariKidX says "lol Japan"

Do we? I'm not arguing for Sony to exit handheld console business, but Nintendo seems to have lit a fire under themselves without the PSV even being out. I'm mean I wouldn't call this complacent. -Cut all Execs, including CEO's, salaries by 25% to 50% following the low sales and price drops, I'd love to see the Playstation execs do this after they have to cut jobs here and there posting losses since they sell the hardware at a loss. - Price Drop within 4 months of release - 20 Free games for early adopters -A holiday line up with two Great Mario games -Bringing back Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion, Kid Icarus as well as making sequels to Animal Crossing and Paper Mario in 2012 - Adding a C(lassic) Controller of sorts for the 3DS with the Circle Pad Pro. -Universal Friend Code, Messaging System for 3DS I wouldn't call any of that complacent, yes you need competition coz it makes things better overall, but pretty much all the great decisions Nintendo made was without the PSV on the market.

Finally put it up huh, cool. Anyway, I see that there are no Vita games in the top 20, means that none sold over 43k, that interesting. Holiday rush always surprises me with Ninty, 90k Wii's!! Inazuma did better that what I thought it would.

PSVita have sell 393,886 in first week of release................this is a very strong start.I don't see anything "Doomed"on that.
#17 Posted by Shirokishi_ (11206 posts) -

The PSV needs a Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, Mario or Pokemon game, QUICK.

Kirby made it to 500,000 units!! Yay

All done ONLY because the PS Vita looked like it was on fire around the time of its release. Nintendo dropped the price and hurried up with te games and features that you speak of only to undercut the Vita before the Vita even launched. You know this as well, come on.

Most of those features aren't things you throw together in a few months, clearly they've been in development for a very long time, longer than when anyone knew when the PSV would release or how much it would be.

I lol at how well the Wii is doing.

I thought everyone in Japan already owned a Wii :P

The Psvita needs to pick it up qicker than the 3DS did if it wants any hope of keeping up with the 3DS in sales.

And a price drop, the drop doesnt have to be $80 though, but it has to be good enough to get the people who are holding off because of the price to buy it.

Start by putting a 4gb card bundled in...310(including a game and memory card) is just to high of an asking price...Eh I'll wait for psv-2000

I sure The Vita will gain some steam. Sony should get some big exclusive hits to push it.

And nice that both Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land hit platinum over there.

Mario Kart actually got there first in spite of releasing a month later. I bet it used the Blue Shell

Indeed. Especially when it comes to 3rd parties. By the time Vita is released throughout both Europe & the U.S., the 3DS will be having a huge install base lead while PS Vita will probably only reach a little over 1 million. And who are 3rd party developers going to make more games for? The handheld with a very high install base, or the one with the worst install base?

Moreover, for the Vita, development will be manpower intensive and will require the development of high resolution assets, whereas the 3DS can just use the same assets as the PSP, making it the natural successor to the PSP (which in turn was the natural successor to the PS2).
