Pretty much my favorite YouTube channel, this guy looks at video games he likes through a critical eye, seeing particular tendencies, pointing out background details, and providing theories as to what went into the development of a game.

It's great stuff, and now with a fantastic video game. Enjoy everyone. Can't wait until Galaxy 2's (the GOAT's) review.

Jesus a 36 min review of an over 6 yr old game? I mean I loved Red letter media's review of star wars but at least star wars was a bad movie which made the review hilarious.

Whatever I'll give it a shot.

edit: Okay gave it a couple minute shot.

boring, not informative, and too long, dry delivery.

TBH it's been a while since I played on any console or handheld.

Company of Heroes 2 multiplayer takes up most of my gaming time now.

But I really want to start Galaxy 2 soon.

Very articulate, knows what he's talking about (which says more about his prep skills than his actual knowledge), and provides amazing insight into just what makes Super Mario Galaxy such a great game.

Will be looking forward to Super Mario Galaxy 2, which IMO, fixed many of the flaws that SMG1 had.

I think the first is better than the second but both are incredible games but Super Mario World beats the lot of them.

I dunno. His main issue with Galaxy was its mechanical regression - in terms of Mario's moveset - compared to the previous two games. Galaxy 2 doesn't really add anything new to that. Don't get me wrong, I think Galaxy 2 is the better game, but I can't really see Matt viewing the game as a clear superior to Galaxy. I reckon he's going to be one of those who considers Galaxy 2's iterative nature less impressive than Galaxy 1's innovation.

As far as I watched he didn't really add anything new to what people who have already played it already know. Kind of pointless. Also it was annoying when he was describing how he thought the game was made talking about it's physics and lighting, ugh.

That was a very interesting review. His voice's tone towards the games he reviews though, sound like he's bored with them at times. Though, despite some of his very descriptive explanations of certain mechanics I didn't feel bored with his review, he definitely spent a lot of time looking into the game and its features. Thanks for posting it.

Not a wrong opinion, but most certainly a bad one. There's no credible argument for 64 being better than Galaxy. 64's level design looks downright janky in comparison.

Even back then I thought SM64 was the worst of the mainline series. It wasn't until SMG that I loved 3D Mario games.

I always find it funny.

People who hate on Nintendo often call Nintendo fans overly nostalgic... yet it's usually the people that hate on Nintendo are truly the nostalgic ones.

I mean with some games I can get the argument. Super Metroid is still one of the best in its franchise despite being old as dirt. Arguments could be made for the older Zelda games too, like LttP, or MM...

But when I see these Nintendo haters clinging to the opinion that SM64 is somehow better than either of the Galaxy games, or that Super Mario Kart is still the best Mario Kart title?

Get the **** outta here haha

EXACTLY, holy shit! I thought I was the only one lol. When SM64 came out I felt like the series just died. Going from the likes of SMB3, SMW and Yoshis Island to that.

Man, those were sad times.

SMG definitely turned my views around regarding 3D Mario.

I kind of feel the same way. I mean, I have utmost respect for SM64 for what it accomplished. Its influence, importance, and ability to bring Mario into 3D with such confidence and verve is worthy of high praise, but I never found to be game consistently fun (some levels just don't work on any level) and it shows its age something fierce: the game is clunky, which is very rare for Mario.

Sunshine is a high quality game but has most of the same issues. It's just somewhat smoother because it's newer.

How some people can say those two games are better than incredibly tight and focused, supremely polished, and endlessly imaginative Galaxy games is just beyond me. I think this is one case in which the nostalgia argument actually applies.

Back in 96 I was in awe of SM64 and thoguht it was amazing to look at. But after the honeymoon phjase I would always come back to SMB and SMW and enjoyed them more. I appreciate SM64 as a blueprint to make a proper 3D platformer but I feel like other platformers from that era were better then SM64.

Right on man, it was a landmark title for sure. Looked amazing and as far as early 3D console games go it did a lot of things very well.

I can always credit it for what it brought to the the table, but of course it was nowhere near as tight as its predecessors and it was outclassed very quickly by its contemporaries.

I'm just glad that Nintendo finally got it together with the 3D games, SMG1 + 2 and 3DW were all a blast to play and every bit as tight as what I'd expect from a Mario platformer.

Because of this thread, I've been looking back at some Mario 64 footage. Man, that shit is even rougher than I thought. The levels have this kind of barren big-but-not-doing-anything-interesting feel to them.

Even Throwback Galaxy in SMG2 with its improvements over the original still came off as a fucking lame ass level. And that was one of the better levels from SM64, not so barren, it actually had a heavy emphasis on platforming obstacles.

I swear, I think Nintendo put that level in Galaxy 2 just for discussions like this lol.

Agreed on the bolded.

To be fair some of the best SNES games have aged extremely well (ALTTP, Super Metroid, FFVI. Chrono Trigger, SMW, SMW2, etc). Same with some Genesis/MD games.

While there were a number of 3D platformers that vastly improved upon SM64, I think it would be fair to say that, with the exception of the modern Mario 3D platformers, 2D platformers just own the shit out of 3D platformers in general. Not to say that 3D platformers aren't worth playing but they don't have that same sense of tension and momentum.

Yeah, it seems really out of place. The cloud suit seems a bit at odds with the level for some reason. I think they knew the level was not up to the rest of the game's standards but wanted the nostalgia rush/fan service.

In one of landlors (sp?) threads, I made a similar point. Glad there's one thing we can agree on, the hypocrisy of the "Nintendo fans are nostalgic" argument.

Hmm I agree with most of the video although it focuses almost exclusively on what could have been better, not so much on what is there. I understand that is sort of the point of his video's (see how things could have been made better) though, the result is more like a study than a review. Watching it as a review almost makes me not want to see his other reviews because they would be, if consistent, extremely negative for other games. But I like the idea of these video's studying these games and seeing how everything might have been improved, just don't call them reviews.

I don't agree with everything he suggests. Like increasing the complexity of how Mario controls may not have been a better design, with how much the complexity of everything that is not Mario has increased in this game. I feel like the devs were compensating in complexity there, and I'd say it was probably a good idea to do so. I and seemingly everyone else agree with almost everything he said and that shows a surprisingly deep understanding of what might make for good game design in theory.
