http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/12/mass-effect-4-will-use-frostbite-engine

So will this be next gen then? It seems like EA is moving with frostbite for all of it's games. Probably cheaper for them to do so because they don't have to license from a third party and they paid for it to be developed anyways. I hope this means bigger more diverse environments!

Well, they better change the engine.
Mass Effect 3 sometimes showed some horribly frightning details in some places.

This, and as long as they get the ME look and feel it really doesn't matter, and I suspect they will be able to do larger environments more easily.

The graphics were already excellent for 2 and 3 (1 was also good but hindered by frame rate) but this is good news I guess. Dragon Age 3 will benefit from FB2 far more.

Why wouldn't they just upgrade to unreal engine 4. Unless it's not ready to be shown or used yet.

Frostbite is a very capable engine, but they better not do what all the others using it do and cover the screen in dirt and flares. Actually.... ME already had a tonne of flare effects. :P

It's weird that EA hasn't done this before. I mean created an engine for all their franchises. There must be tons and tons of savings to be made. Let's see if they can really leverage this next gen (kind of scary thought :P)

Ummm idk. Maybe because EA doesn't want to fork out license money and negotiate with Epic every time they want to use and use the engine? I really can see all the major publishers having all their 1st party developed games using a central engine. Easier to maintain, cheaper to use, and the engine can be customized to the developers liking instead of having to ask the engine developer for permission.

That and/or ME4 will still be on current gen systems, so UE4 is not needed.

True.Guess I was kinda hoping to see it on UE4 just to see what it would be like.

I mean they should've ended it with ME3 and followed a new protagonist or setting.

Plus I'm glad you pointed that out I didn't notice.

It is following new protagonist and new settings with a different story to boot.

..........I don't see why they would do that when the engine for Mass Effect 3 looks great and we didn't really see any limitations with the things it provided with.. It seems like a unnecessary money sink that doesn't address ANY of the complaints made about the series or that specific game.

Destruction would be nice to have, as well as bigger worlds instead of hallways. They want to change the gameplay up, so I can see this as a good move.

JangoWuzHere

i'd like to hear why you think this is lame.

EA's got a powerful and flexible engine built with multiplatform developement in mind, aswell as having support on tap for it via Dice and Black Box the engine suits them, its being utilized to its potential as its going to make dev cycles a lot more streamlined lowering costs and developement times.

And you are trying to make this out to be a bad thing? the only thing lame here is the opinion your showing.

Does anyone else think this is really good news? It should make the combat a lot smoother to control. Mass Effect 3 felt too much like 2.5 in part because of using the same engine! :(

This sounds fine with me... Just keep the exploration open and the combat fun and I'm cool... the milkey way was the best "universe" this gen... I want more, and I don't want it to be MMO.

Frostbite isn't just a level editor for Battlefield. They've made racing games with it so it's pretty versatile and you can make whatever game in whatever genre you want with it. If ME turned into a FPS it wouldn't have anything to do with it being on Frostbite.

This is going to be interesting. We still don't know what the engine is fully capable of and suited to outside of BF3, and if NFS The Run is anything to go by, EA was a bit premature in trying to pull a Capcom MTFramework.

Thank God. Now we can get a game that doesn't have clunky controls(there's not an UE3 game that doesn't feel clunky.).

No. The Frostbite 2 engine is a more capable and prettier engine than the UE3. EA already owns the FB engine, they wouldn't have to pay a cent in licensing and royalties like with the UE3.

The engine will often inform the gam design, I can tell you that from working a lot with UE3 and Unity, and dabbling with CryEngine's variations of Unreal and Source over the years. Some are more suited to some things, some arent. More often than not one size fits all doesn't work, and that can come down to the fundamentals of an engine. Take X-Com - it's an unreal 3 game, and it's as good as a turn based strat game has been on an engine not made for this kind of thing. And it still breaks and has major issues. Or racing games in UE3 - how can we forget Fatal Inertia. That's not to say the engine could be reworked to suit it in a variety of ways - I had to give that a shot with UE3 UDK in making a sidescroller, well before there was a preset package for sidescrolling and that was a nightmare. These days it's extremely easy. However it doesn't mean it's going to be nearly as well suited for it. Which is why the whole Frostbite thing reeks more EA management than anything else. But hey it could be great, I'm all for more engine diversity.

789shadow

- did you actually play the DLC ending? If not, youneedn't ask this

- they can set it anywhere during the timeline. How about a game about the contact war between humans and turians? Or the pirate attack shepard held off? It's a big universe
