Mario Kart 8 vs DriveClub

Mario Kart 8 for me.

It's the most baffling thing i've ever encountered. Games are for everyone. And while yes some games are made specifically for children MK8 is not one of them.

To be honest, I'm more excited about the new Mario Kart more than Driveclub. I haven't played a mario Kart game since n64. Frankly, I lost interest in Driveclub back in November when it kept getting delayed. I own a PS4, and I don't even a WiiU, but I may pick one up for Smash bros & MK8 if the online is any good.

It's ridiculous. This is the racing game Nintendo gets so you put up with it but let's face it. Its a kiddy karting game you've played a million times before.

Sure Wasdie, I understand all of this. I understand that DriveClub has technically a whole lot more going on than Mario Kart does- no arguments there. But you know what, given all that, I think I am entitled to call the devs out on their choice to prioritize resolution over framerate. I think I can do that, and I think if I were them, I would have prioritized fluidity (i.e. higher framerate) in my racing game over higher polygons or higher resolution assets.

As for your final point: I agree. Guilty as charged. Then again, that is literally what all of System Wars is, Wasdie. That's what this board thrives on.

Isn't Mario Kart an arcade racer and DriveClub a simulator? Doesn't seem like you can really compare them. But I would definitely try both! Nintendo and Evolution Studios are both great developers.

There was a long time when people saw the entirety of gaming as something only for children, and when you grew into adulthood, well then you just weren't supposed to game anymore. That was the general public view on gaming.

I agree, gaming is for everyone and there is not quick divider that says 'bright colors = children / gray and brown = grown men'. Lots of people enjoy lots of different games. I see kids playing GTA and COD, which have an 18+ rating and I see grown adults having fun with Pokemon and Mario.

I enjoy a lot of 'kids' movies as well, like Pixar, but that's because they aren't kids movies, they are for everyone. Like you said.

Mario Kart 8 is 'not the same game I have played thousands of times before.' it is not the only game on my Nintendo. Oh, and there is nothing about it that is kiddy. Family friendly, maybe, yes. Kiddy, no. Kiddy is stuff like Dora the Explorer or Blue's Clues, which appeals only to kids. Family friendly appeals to everybody, including kids. It's a fine distinction people often forget to make.

@charizard1605: I can't help you if you're not over familiar with the franchise which has been largely unchanged for a long time. Some of the character designs are shocking. Peach? What the hell is she? She looks like a toddlers dolly. The design is kiddy. I know there is a fine line between "family" and childish but in this case I think it's largely down to the lack of a mature alternative. And look forward to the glut of Nintendo racing games about to be released for wii u. What are they again?

I'm gonna play the shit out of some kiddy racing!

Then, I'll get Project CARS later this year. Best of both worlds, brah.

Mario Kart 8 actually runs at 720P and 60fps( most of the time). There are some exceptions to this rule.

And I really don't get the comparison between both games.

It's a racing game series ffs, how do you expect them to change it? They add new tracks, new items, new vehicles, new characters, new mechanics, and new modes every single time. This time, they've added so much stuff that it is the single largest evolution the franchise has seen yet. I would like to see your suggestions as to how they can meaningfully evolve this racing game franchise that satisfies you.

Also, let's see, the best looking racing sim is coming to the Wii U- Project Cars (in fact, it was announced for Wii U first, and is leading development for consoles on Wii U). So there is that, if you want something less 'kiddy.'

And man, I can't argue with you about what you think looks kiddy. If you worry about that sort of things, then in my opinion, we have fundamentally different outlooks on gaming.

WTF ? when the previews were out all of them (yeah, I watched all of them) said the game was 1080p and 60 fps in 1 player or 2 player modes.

The game went down in resolution and/or fps when it was played in 3-4 player modes.

Digital Foundry says it's 1080p/60FPS. I'm inclined to trust their analysis.

The game actually runs at 720P and 60fps.The framerate goes down to 30fps only in certain situations like in 4 player splitscreen if I recall.

What game will sell more? I'm guessing MK over the lifetime, but the WIiu install base is pretty small and thanks to SONY and PSN+ you can get DC at no cost.
