MAG (or Massive Action Game) is not a MMO.

DC Universe is an MMO, World of Warcraft is a MMO, Huxley is a MMO, MAG is an FPS featuring 256 player battles (similar to battlefield).

Where is this MAG is a MMO coming from? Just to downplay the game and conclude that it will have fees?

MMO stands for Massively Multiplayer Online.

MAG is not an MMORPG (Which are those games you listed), but it is most definitely an MMO game.

MAG looks great

However, my concern is that there will be soo many people it won't really feel like your contributing all that much.

I guess you are referring to my thread. Sorry, I have heard many people on system wars say that it was confirmed to be an MMO...

EDIT: I just checked gamespot's description of the game and it says:

"MAG (Massive Action Game) is a massively multiplayer online action game featuring 256 player battles."

So it indeed is an MMO unless gamespot are wrong...

I tried to tlel them, and I failed. Wiki was my only proof but it failed me. :( (Someone edit a page that said MAG was a MMOFPS.) Also, this one guy from a website said so. But if websites are calling games like Zelda a RPG who are we to argue?

Yes. A game that supports hundreds of people is an MMO.

A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMOG or simply MMO) is a video game which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously.

Whatever. I'm not mad that they are calling it a MMO (it's not) I'm mad that everyting is losing it's true meaning. A RPG isn't just leveling up with stat based combat and dice roles, ROLE PLAYING does. And no in a few years just because it's online only it'll be called a MMO now.

so in order for it to be an MMO you need a character interacting with the "consistant" world? Last I checked, thats a RPG...

Why do you keep bringing up role playing stuff? MMO is a term for any game featuring a massive online mode. Massive meaning over a hundred usually.

You could be all indignant about diluting the meaning of RPG if MAG was being called an MMORPG, but its not. There are MMOFPS games, MMO Action games, MMO Management games, etc.

There is the wiki page referred to above, I did not edit this myself before I'm accused of that but yes MAG is on the list it is an MMO though I doubt it will charge fees as there are many MMO games that don't charge to play online games such as guild wars. I think sony would be more interested in selling in game content rather than charging subscription fees as they have mentioned in the past.

Comparing MMOGs to other games

There are a number of factors shared by most MMOGs that make them different from other types of games. MMOGs create a persistent universe where the game continues playing regardless of whether or not anyone else is. Since these games strongly or exclusively emphasize multiplayer gameplay, few of them have any significant single-player aspects or client-side artificial intelligence. As a result, players cannot "finish" MMOGs in the typical sense of single-player games.

Most MMOGs also share other characteristics that make them different from other multiplayer online games. MMOGs host a large number of players in a single game world, and all of those players can interact with each other at any given time. Popular MMOGs might have thousands of players online at any given time, usually on a company owned server. Non-MMOGs, such as Battlefield 1942 or Half-Life usually have less than 50 players online (per server) and are usually played on private servers. Also, MMOGs usually do not have any significant mods since the game must work on company servers. There is some debate if a high head-count is the requirement to be an MMOG. Some say that it is the size of the game world and its capability to support a large number of players that should matter. For example, despite technology and content constraints, most MMOGs can fit up to a few thousand players on a single game server at a time.

To support all those players, MMOGs need large-scale game worlds, and servers to connect players to those worlds. Sometimes a game features a universe which is copied onto different servers, separating players, and this is called a "sharded" universe. Other games will feature a single universe which is divided among servers, and requires players to switch. Still others will only use one part of the universe at any time. For example, Tribes (which is not an MMO) comes with a number of large maps, which are played in rotation (one at a time). In contrast, the similar title PlanetSide uses the second model, and allows all map-like areas of the game to be reached via flying, driving, or teleporting.

MMORPGs usually have sharded universes, as they provide the most flexible solution to the server load problem, but not always. For example, the space sim Eve Online uses only one large cluster server peaking at over 41,000 simultaneous players.

There are also a few more common differences between MMOGs and other online games. Most MMOGs charge the player a monthly or bimonthly fee to have access to the game's servers, and therefore to online play. Also, the game state in an MMOG rarely ever resets. This means that a level gained by a player today will still be there tomorrow when the player logs back on. MMOGs often feature ingame support for clans and guilds. The members of a clan or a guild may participate in activities with one another, or show some symbols of membership to the clan or guild.

However, the boundaries between multiplayer online games and MMOGs are not always as clear or obvious. Neverwinter Nights (2002) and Diablo II are usually called online role-playing games, (RPGs) but are also sometimes incorrectly called MMORPGs (a type of MMOG).

Now that I think about it in MMORPGs even though Thousand of players are in a server the biggest play activity was Everquest's good old 80 man raids(I heard it had 80 man raids anyway...) I guess I'm just going have to raise the standards when I become a developed. But right know you all probably think I"m crazy and have impossible high standards. :P

Mag is a MMO~ but MMO is a rather loose term, considering all it means is Massive multiplayer Online....so 256 is fairly massive for a FPS, so in terms

MAG: "Hey guys I'm a MMOFPS!"

Because all you have is a Douglas Adams quote in your signature and your opinion? :P. Mayby to settle the argument, we need to set a number that makes a game 'massive' I think we all agree it can't be less then a hundred. And NPCs/BOTs to fill up space doesn't count.

Sony said anygame that is played on PSN will not have any fees for any game to play it online so once you pay for it in the Store you will not be charged to play online, That includes the Agency MMO, DC Universe MMORPG, and MAG MMO.

The only games that need to be paided for on PSN are to buy the PSN Network Games.

MAG IS THIRD PERSON NOT FIRST PERSON!

Zipper Interactive created the SOCOM franchise, so they're using that experience into MAG. The Insider that told Kotaku details said it himself they're aiming for the SOCOM feel in MAG in terms of mechanics (i.e. Third person view).
