Don't blame consumers for [justifiably] asking for such clarification.

Asked? Really? Complaints and threats are asking?

I do not condone the behaviour exhibited, merely point out that such responses result from the disingenuousness of the original statements.

Yes, whoring your game to a dead console with wimpy graphics hardware like the XB1 is the best way to reach that goal.

Agreed, great decision SE/CD. Release the game initially to the lowest common denominator for the new gen (Wii U is not really a new gen console).

This specific GAME in the IP franchise will not come to PS platforms. Further TR games down the road will if Microsoft doesn't money hat those also.

"I think it can be good for the franchise and good for gaming all up, because it's a franchise that's meant something, and we're going to be able to work with them and invest and try to put the marketing and everything else at a level, and we're active in working with them on the development of the game as well, to try to make it one of those franchises that stands out."

"Phil Spencer: I don't own them building Tomb Raider on other platforms, so I'm just not the person to talk to. I can't talk about the franchise that way. I can talk about the deal I have.

Phil Spencer: Yes, the deal has a duration. I didn't buy it. I don't own the franchise."

Notice how Specifically the PR statements in Spencer's and CDs answers talk about the franchise itself.... Tomb Raider / IP. Never once ROTR is brought into the PR speak. That is what he is considering HIS DEAL. This game alone is the Microsoft deal.

P. Spencer: "Now, obviously if I'm going to partner on it, I'm a platform holder, I'm hardly going to invest to go make the PlayStation version of any game. It is a business. So when we go invest with a partner on a big franchise, we're going to come with certain needs we have out of the relationship."

Another quote from Spencer. This game ROTR will not come to PS4 or PS3. Could another Tomb Raider / IP come to the PS4?

Yes. TR games will come to the PS4. This specific game in the franchise will not. I don't know what's so hard to understand from all of this?

Look at the wording in all the PR released so far.

EDIT: As far as the TIMED claim. That is a PC port of THIS game ROTR.

P. Spencer: "The deal we have in place is like the Ryse and DR3 deals we have"

Last TR game sold best among Playstation fans/owners. It's coming to PS4.

Because of the circumstances around it, lemming. Poor Phil and his lies. :)

So a game that was nominated as one of the best games of the year on every single platform is a B-tier game?

Self-ownage at it's finest.

Plus there would be no Devil's Third or Bayonetta 2 without Nintendo. Keep crying cow...

My point being: TR overpromised and underdelivered. When all was said and done, no one cared.

What does Devil's Third or Bayo 2 have to do with anything, lemming? We've already established it was a multiplatform game. Nice work, lem.

@b4x said:

TR sold 3.5 million copies on the PS3. You guys act is if it's a 10 million seller?

Funding development... It's the exact same thing as developing. There is zero difference. In the end the MONEY makes the product. On the planet Earth.

I asked you, are you serious? You honestly believe what you type? After all the evidence that is right in your face?

P. Spencer: "Now, obviously if I'm going to partner on it, I'm a platform holder, I'm hardly going to invest to go make the PlayStation version of any game. It is a business. So when we go invest with a partner on a big franchise, we're going to come with certain needs we have out of the relationship."

Unfortunately even I bought a copy thanks to hype. Worse game I played last year, and the most generic game of last gen. Tickbox development with no soul. Can't imagine the sequel being any different.

Yeah, and that money is coming from Squeenix because there were already developing it.

Phil can say whatever he likes. He's compromised. No one believes him. And his shifting and sliminess means that, yes, it is coming to PS4. Enjoy your rental, Blackace4X. :)

The backlash was caused by Phil's typical lies about something after months of him trying to present himself as a "breath of fresh air," at least that's what lemmings tried.

Honestly the people defending shit like timed exclusions in this industry are almost as bad as all the companies allowing them to happen. Yes, this is a good business move, but no gamer benefits from this at all. You get your fucking bragging rights on the internet and that's it. Way to go.

The fact that it's coming onto PC and possibly PS systems later doesn't automatically mean we should just stop complaining. This is still another multi-million dollar deal someone made to exclude a game from coming to other systems for a set amount of time. It's not a deal to create a new game, not a deal to save a game and allow it to continue being made, and it's not even a deal to bring a game to systems it wasn't previously coming onto.

And even if the dumbass fanboys don't try to spin the issue by referring to games like Bayonetta 2 or Bloodborne (which are not examples of this same bullshit happening) they still spin the issue. Basically, it doesn't matter that MS is doing it because "you wouldn't care if soandso were doing this!"

I'd also argue that it's very acceptable to be mad not only because this sort of thing is occurring, but because companies will desperately lie to us as if we are too stupid to figure it out and then try to sweep the whole damn thing under the rug after it blows up in their face. This wouldn't have blown up like it did if MS didn't straight up lie about it being timed (which they completely did, not only with that "everything we are about to announce after this point is exclusive" line, but also "correcting" Geoff Keighley on twitter after he initially confirmed that it was only going to be timed exclusive for holiday 2015) The devs weren't any better.

Not only was the letter explaining the whole deal cryptic and unhelpful (later they edited it) but they basically slap all PS and PC gamers in the face and then for the next several days, proceed to do NOTHING but spam Tomb Raider fan art in attempts to remove the controversial post from the front page of their feed.

  1. Did Crystal Dynamics know about this deal?
Yes, Crystal Dynamics is excited to be partnering with Microsoft to make the best game possible. As Darrell mentioned in his message, we have a long history with Microsoft and they have been a very strong supporter of the franchise. They will help us grow and nurture the Tomb Raider franchise more than ever before.

Translation:

Our long history with Microsoft started when they showed up with a big bag of money and told us to bend over, which is where the long part comes in because really we didn't have much to do with each other until than. This Big Bag of money that looks like it came out of the basement vault of Scrooge Mcduck will help nurture our wallets and Microsoft has agreed to be a strong supporter of our wallets.

#115 Posted by LJS9502_basic (151504 posts) -

@handssss: I agree with you for once. Paying to keep a game off consoles isn't cool...and I'd say that no matter which company did it. A new IP...sure....make an exclusive deal BEFORE the game is announced. But to take established IPs sucks for consumers. And consumers need to stand up to companies. That's how you keep them in line. I despise EA to this day for dissing the DC. Therefore, I don't run out and buy their games unless it's a gift. And I hate that I have to do that.

LoL no it won't. Microsoft just threw money at it just to keep it off the PS4 and PC, if you think any of that money will actually be going into the game or used to make it better you're sadly mistaken.

If Microsoft never threw money to make TR a timed exclusive it would of still been made just the same. If anyone should be pissed it should be Lemmings, because instead of using that money to fund new games and innovation they used it to try and hold TR ransom to PS and PC owners in order to make them buy their console.

Xbots didn't get anything out of this other than the ability to mock non Xbot owners that they get to play the game first, which is a waste of money if you ask any rational thinking person.

I personally think Spencer should've just literally stuck to his "Only on Xbox holiday 2015" statement. All questions regarding ROTR should've been responded with that answer. Stop giving into entitled fanboy gamers. This was a great chance for MS to sell their console and now I don't even know if it was worth it for them to buy a timed exclusive deal.

Gamers need to stop taking everything so personally. The original TR re-boot didn't sell nearly as well as it should've so I'm sure SE were very thankful to have the extra money to fund the game or future projects. I would much rather a dev take a time-exclusive deal to help pad costs, a lot of developers have gone bankrupt, I'm sure that's great for gamers according to gamer logic now. All the people mad at Nintendo have no right to be either, B2 and Devil's Third would not even exist right now if it weren't for Nintendo funding the projects.

Also, to everyone crying about developing the game on the weaker system need to stop. Sega Genesis was weaker than SNES, that sure did stop great games from coming out on the system. The 3DS is weaker than the Vita, sure did stop the 3DS from having great games. PS2 was weaker than the original xbox, PS2 sure didn't have any great games. (this entire paragraph is sarcasm...just to be clear)

Have to say that disagreeing with consumers voicing their opinions blows dude.....as for weaker system.....it's for the 360 as well....a last gen console. So not a selling point.

As for your example...the Genesis came out before the SNES anyway.

Spencer didn't say anything wrong to being with though, he said "holiday 2015". Just by that wording alone I was able to tell it was a timed exclusive.

My point is it doesn't matter if the system is the most powerful. Games are what makes systems memorable and a lot of people here in system wars IMO fail to realize that.

@littlestreakier: How is being the fastest selling game in the franchise and surpassing sales goals not selling "nearly as well as it should"?

That's great that it's the fastest selling game in the franchise but sometimes that's not enough. Tomb Raider's development cost is $100 million; here's a link: http://www.vg247.com/2013/03/27/analyst-tomb-raider-cost-100-million-needs-10-million-sales-to-succeed/. I was under the impression that it didn't turn a profit with my initial post but it actually looks like a year after it's release, the game has finally become profitable; here's a link http://www.gamespot.com/articles/once-an-underperformer-tomb-raider-nearing-6-million-in-sales/1100-6418162/.

Game development costs in general have skyrocketed. Here are a few more examples http://kotaku.com/how-much-does-it-cost-to-make-a-big-video-game-1501413649 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_expensive_video_games_to_develop. Although I personally do not agree with time-exclusives...i understand why they exist.

because they are actually pretty different games.

Uncharted is a linear action game with some puzzles here and there. Tomb Raider offers a different perspective to the treasure hunting premise by including survival elements and some exploration too.

It may turn out the game stinks. If I am paying someone money I expect something in return. Simple business. If that something is not being on PS4 then that's business between the two. People can like/hate/not give a turd. Problem is imo, people are emotional about business. I too have been so.

"Final Fantasy All the Bravest is not really a game. It's a cash delivery system, with you playing as the courier, your money the cargo, and Square Enix the unpaying recipient. After years of trying to monetize videogames, Square Enix has now moved on to monetizing customers themselves. It's cut out the irritating middle man that is the videogame, and found a way to simply get people to hand over money in exchange for nothing. That is what All the Bravest is. It's nothing. It's air. It's a thought. You're buying a concept in order to keep buying concepts.

Final Fantasy All the Bravest is fucking disgusting."

Sorry but past history is evidence and there is more evidence than this I could find you of SE selling out.

Yes, whoring your game to a dead console with wimpy graphics hardware like the XB1 is the best way to reach that goal.

It is if you want help with funding, marketing, and development.

Gee, I wonder why a company would be willing to do that?

Sorry but no, that has nothing to do with RotTR. I steal a car and I am caught. Everytime I drive a car after I am guilty of grand theft auto?

Sorry but Yes, RotTR is under the same Square Enix. And that analogy makes no sense, if you're a convicted car thief you think I should just hand over my keys and just trust you won't steal it? Why should I give Square Enix the benefit of the doubt when they've done nothing to earn my trust in fact they've done the exact opposite of late. No matter what way you spin it past history is evidence and the evidence is in my favor #dealwithit.

@Shielder7:

There is nothing I have to deal with. You stated something that was complete conjecture. Any logical human being can see it. I never said I was driving your car. The fact is evidence of past crimes has no bearing on current situations. It may make you PERSONALLY wary, and I wouldn't blame you for that. But you said to him, "LoL no it won't. Microsoft just threw money at it just to keep it off the PS4 and PC, if you think any of that money will actually be going into the game or used to make it better you're sadly mistaken"

That is a statement, not the expression of your own apprehension towards SE. I said it was nonsense because there is no proof that the money paid for RotTR is not being used for the game. There are actually quotes by Spencer to the opposite. " and we're going to be able to work with them and invest and try to put the marketing and everything else at a level, and we're active in working with them on the development of the game as well, to try to make it one of those franchises that stands out."-http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/08/18/why-microsoft-wanted-rise-of-the-tomb-raider

Now whether that is true or not is beyond me. And you can feel anyway you wish personally about the validity of it. But you have NO PROOF to back up your statement. I hope you can deal with that.

LMAO evidence of past crimes has no bearing on current situations? Are you on drugs?

1. Selling out technically isn't a crime.

2. The definition of the evidence that we're using in this context isn't based around the criminal (Law) definition

3. If a Mass murderer shows up to your town and people start mysteriously disappearing don't you think the cops should investigate that guy first? You can trust the guy and walk down a black alley with him if you want to, but I'm a little smarter than that.

If you bought any of that PR BS you might as well tattoo your forehead with naive and gullible, and yes past history in this context is evidence i.e. Proof. if not you better go tell scientists and psychologists they're doing it wrong. It's shown time and time again past behaviors repeat. If I have reason to believe something will or won't happen such as past history it's not conjecture.

Sometimes you just have to use your noggin, if some individual kicks you in the nuts every time you try and shake his hand what makes you think he's not going to do it for the 5th time?

On drugs? No. But I have some study of law under my belt. If a mass murder shows up in my town and it is known he is a mass murderer there is no reason to investigate the man. As you said he is a mass murderer. He would be arrested because the current situation is the man hasn't stood trial for the crimes.

What, other than your feelings, which are in no way facts that apply to anyone else's reality, does that Final Fantasy, Sterling quote have anything to do with Rise of the Tomb Raider. You can link them in how you feel all you want, it doesn't make it fact, and therefore it isn't proof of what you said to him. See your confusing your feelings about someone or company with facts that you don't have.

Again, show me Proof that CD isn't using any money from MS in the deal for RotTR on the development of the game. You cant. You show me what they did in the past. As I said if that makes you wary, fine. But you told him he was mistaken for thinking different. Ok, show me the proof from This deal that backs that up. You don't have it. That is conjecture. Guesswork, because you have formed an opinion about a situation without all the information. You're trying to spin this into where your hesitancy to believe SE is a fact. That is coming from your anus.

was looking forward to playing this on my PS4 since most of my gaming buddies are there.... Such a shame.

Welp, I guess I'll buy it for xbone and play it by my lonesome regardless of how the multiplayer mode turns out on this game.

I loved the fact you tried to break down the exaggerated example but failed completely to acknowledge the fact you're using the wrong definition and not the one I gave you. This isn't a court of law so were going to use the standard definition.

Yeah Square Enix....... I thought I went over that do you not understand the connection Square Enix has between the two? And past history is considered evidence in this context not just feelings pal.

That's easy CD isn't using any money from MS because it didn't get any of the money Square Enix did. But if you want to get really technical "Proof" is only a mathematical term as nothing outside mathematics can ever be proven, it's why I've been using the term evidence. A person with a law degree should of known that.

For the sake of argument what exactly do you want me to show you? Exactly what SE will do with the money in the future? Well since I lack a time machine and the ability to hack SE I can't give you that, but any rational thinking person will agree that's beyond absurd. I can show you evidence that SE won't from past history which I have. Just like the past history of a junky shows that it's a safe bet he's going to spend his money on drugs.

Bottom line I have evidence to support my claim, you have none I win.
