Poll: Let's do this: What is the best 3D Mario game? (81 votes)

Super Mario 64 32%
Super Mario Sunshine 7%
Super Mario Galaxy 16%
Super Mario Galaxy 2 31%
Super Mario 3D World 14%

Nintendo's Mario series moves from strength to strength, especially the flagship 3D platformers.

A 3D Mario platformer means assured quality, to the extent that you know you're playing one of the finest crafted games in the industry at the moment.

Nonetheless, Mario changes a lot with each release- so much that you could slap a new character in every game, and it would be an all new IP for all purposes.

Given that, which specific Mario style, which Mario outing, do you like the best? What, according to you, is the best 3D Mario game?

3D World

This was the last Mario game i played :P

Probably 3D World, but I'd have no idea since I've only played up until Galaxy 2.

Sm64, without question

Definitely Super Mario 3D World, Nintendo EAD Tokyo perfected their craft. Galaxy 2 is fantastic, but it doesn't compete with the precision and quality of the core level design present in 3D World

Super Mario 3D World> Super Mario Galaxy 2> Super Mario 3D Land> Super Mario Galaxy> Super Mario 64> Super Mario Sunshine

#6 Posted by iamllamapie (211 posts) -

I thought Sunshine was brilliant. It's probably because of the Wii's lack of power but it held up well for years

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Mine is Super Mario 64. Good game. Lots of hours well spent.

@finalstar2007:

You should try the recent ones like 3D land on 3DS.

#10 Posted by TheGuardian03 (21724 posts) -

I'll go with 3D world for now.

#11 Edited by Demonjoe93 (9582 posts) -

I, uh, agree with AtariKid; SMG2 was my favorite.

Still have to play Galaxy 2 and 3D World but Galaxy 1 and 3D Land are my favourite 3D mario games so far.

#13 Posted by Chozofication (2872 posts) -

I've had enough Mario to last me a lifetime, I think. And they're all so completely devoid of challenge.

Galaxy 2 is probably the best, though.

Personally I liked sunshine the best.

#18 Edited by freedomfreak (40527 posts) -

Galaxy 2, probably.

3D World was fine, but it was just more Mario. Lacked any excitement.

Mario 64 is winning eh? Dat Nostalgia... Or people just voting for one of the very last Mario games they've ever played. That game aged SO badly and as a platformer, it's one of the weakest of the franchise. At least that's how I feel about it.

#20 Posted by Speak_Low (1085 posts) -

SMG1 didn't even get 1 vote?

Mario 64 for me.

#21 Posted by ImDaMan4Realz (94 posts) -

Could u stop with all these "what's the best (insert nintendo related thing) threads? Noone gives a shlt about nintendo or mario anymore so stop trying.

Well, there's nothing wrong with looking at each game in the context of its time, too. Anyways I still love the game for its art style and music. Plus there's a part of me that misses the more open platform structure of games like Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie. But I chose Galaxy 1.

Honestly I think they're all stellar. Really.

The problem with Sunshine, though, is that there's only 50 or so stars worth of real content. It was kind of rushed like Wind Waker, I think.

I don't think 3D World's single player quite holds up to Galaxy, although the multiplayer is wonderful.

Mario Galaxy... Yes thats right, The first one.

#24 Posted by bbkkristian (14952 posts) -

I haven't played any 3d Mario game other than 3D World and 3D Land. :/

#25 Edited by Comduter (2172 posts) -

I can't vote because I've only played SM 64 and SM 3D Land. I find myself enjoying 3D Land more than 64 though.

Galaxy 2 by a mile.

#27 Posted by NaveedLife (17179 posts) -
  1. Super Mario 64 (10)
  2. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (9.5)
  3. Super Mario Sunshine (9.0)
  4. Super Mari Galaxy (9.0)

Have not played World yet. And honestly I need to play Galaxy again to judge it.

Super Mario 64 winning...

sigh

#29 Posted by PrincessGomez92 (3568 posts) -

Galaxy right now. I imagine 2 is even better.

#30 Posted by DocSanchez (1600 posts) -

Mario Galaxy 1. Almost makes me want to dig out the wii from wherever I threw it.

#31 Posted by trugs26 (5459 posts) -

As much as I like 3D World, I think it's getting over rated. I'd definitely put that near, if not, the bottom of the list. Something like this:

Galaxy 2 > Galaxy 1 > 64 > Sunshine == 3D World

#32 Posted by chocolate1325 (32524 posts) -

Mario Galaxy

#33 Posted by Sword-Demon (6970 posts) -

64 was the only one that could hold my attention

#34 Posted by Big_Pecks (5305 posts) -

As much as I love Sunshine, Galaxy changed platforming.

You realize Sunshine was on Gamecube right?

#36 Posted by wiifan001 (18412 posts) -

Dang it....

Mario 64 is only winning because of the split between Galaxy 1 & 2

#37 Posted by mrintro (1354 posts) -

This is funny. When I did the poll in SW about SM64 vs Galaxy most picked galaxy. I personally think Super Mario 64. I don't think this generation of gamers realize how truly special it was because they judge it by the graphics. Hell I still miss being able to punch and triple jump and dive with Mario! Such a staple of my childhood gaming.

#38 Posted by superbuuman (2828 posts) -

SMG2..since it manage to be better than SMG, its SMG2. :)

#39 Posted by AcidTango (582 posts) -

Super Mario 64 is still my favourite 3D Mario game to this day.

#40 Posted by AmayaPapaya (9029 posts) -

Galaxy 2. Galaxy was just more creative and I didn't like some of the gameplay design in 3D World.

And nostaglia.

Anyway, Galaxy 2 is easily the best 3D Mario.

#42 Edited by ConanTheStoner (5280 posts) -

I give it to Galaxy 2 pretty easily, with 3D World in a distant 2nd.

Thats not a knock against 3D World at all, the game is brilliant and my personal GotY, it just doesnt reach the same heights as SMG2. Not many games really do.

#43 Edited by MirkoS77 (7473 posts) -

Both Galaxy games, but the 2nd more so. I cannot think of a better innovation to the platforming genre than the introduction of gravity. It really altered the dynamics and opened the door to some insanely creative level designs.

#44 Edited by milannoir (1557 posts) -

Voted 64, but that was a tough call. Loved all 5, and the last one is a blast. But Super Mario 64 was a game that defined its generation, and one of the most influential games in history in my opinion. It's also one of the few games from before the year 2000 that I can still play without being bothered by its technical limitations (though if I had to vote for the most replayable old game, I'd choose PC games like Civilization II or the first three XComs).

#45 Posted by nintendoboy16 (26689 posts) -

Super Mario Galaxy 1

Followed by: Super Mario 64.

#46 Edited by drinkerofjuice (3188 posts) -

Have yet to play SM3DW, but for some reason I doubt it's as majestic and as impeccably crafted as Galaxy 2. That game was the closest the seventh generation came to perfection.

For the standards of its time: Super Mario 64

By today's standards: Super Mario Galaxy 2

Boo 3D platformers!

#50 Edited by AcidTango (582 posts) -

Seriously what is with the hate against the SM64 fans in Gamespot? It seems that many Mario fans here are always shocked that the rest of us like the game and insults us as well for saying that it is our favourite 3D Mario game. Stop thinking that anyone who likes that game is because of nostalgia. Many of us like it because we still think it's fun.
