Now before you break out the bullet points, I'm strictly referring to game related features and implementations. I don't wanna hear about how good it is at traversing the UI or how 'minority report' the voice commands and hand gestures are. Saying 'Xbox, On!' does not wow me either. At the minute the ones I know about are gimmicky like being able to shout at zombies in DR3(lol, wtf?)

Context: Hopefully at the end of the year I'll be buying a kinectless sku and Quantum Break will have been released(providing it turns out good), not to mention a hefty price drop if sales continue as they are. But in the instance MS keeps kinect as a pack in I was wondering what great benefit Kinect 2.0 actually has to gaming in general for the system and if it's worth waiting until it's eventually dropped even if it takes longer?

Some concerns: I think it's flawed as it doesn't have the advertised 1:1 experience for gaming that plagued the original Kinect and despite being a pack-in will be limited to UI functionality primarily with the odd casual game here and there(D4 & K.S.R). The lack of software also is concerning and shows even MS doesn't have quite as much confidence in it as they thought they had. People are telling me to 'wait and see' or 'hope' that devs use it in the future, which is not really a convincing argument for something I'm paying a premium for.

I love how this is the only excuse some ppl have for not wanting a kinect.. bottom line, if you don't have friends that aren't gamers, say, a girlfriend or females (shock) then you won't want a kinect in your parents basement or wherever you mooch from. Like me, I have a girlfriend and invite girls and friends that aren't hard-core gamers over and kinect is very fun for them and me, especially while drinking or just passing the time. I just said the Kinect is great piece of tech but devs hate it and the games for it are ass, how is it revolutionary it's exactly eyeTOY 3.0, And it's pretty much a downfall of the Xbox this gen it's nothing more than a gimmick, give me any example of how this is revolutionary? how is it redefining gaming? It's pretty much trying to get Nintendo's success last gen, this gen and it's failing hard.

edit: Also Kinect last gen proved nothing more than awful games,and cheap tricks, If I wanted gimmicks and fun in the basement with non-hardcore gamers I'd get a Wii or Wii U(actually own one), and also what has MS innovated with the Kinect? Sony didn't need to innovate anything this gen, except for them getting more games for gamers, the innovation thing is bs that Cows and Lems try to pull when PC gaming has been surviving countless years with the same controls and hasn't changed it's core.

It could be useful for the RTS genre when combined with k/m support (whenever a dev actually decides to do this).

I have both platforms. I don't think the kinect is worth it for gaming only, but its not a knock on kinect as much as it is a knock on games for it. It's pretty cool to use in BF and DR3 though, but as of now for pure gaming not worth it. Still after using it, I don't know how i lived without it. Makes me PS4 feel like old tech. Like going back to a blackberry qwerty keyboard after using swype.

@misterpmedia: Outside of the voice commands (which in games like Skyrim and Mass Effect were hella fun), there isn't much Kinect in multiplats or games that aren't specifically "Kinect games". The voice commands are awesome for the media functions of the console, and I have started to really get into the motion controls for the console interface as well.

I could see down the road where voice commands in multiplayer games would be awesome - you could have all the rich commands for games like WoW, but for the XB1, they would be voice activated instead of hot-key based. Sadly, nothing like that exists right now (yet, anyway).

I really don't know why anyone would want an XB1 without Kinect.

Thanks for the reply. So finally we have one. Refinement and development of in game voice commands. But for the rest, as stated in the top post, I said avoid mentioning the UI/media functionality if possible as I'm interested in what Kinect does for gaming.

Literally all I use it for is turning my system on and watching Netflix all with voice commands, I never use it when I'm actually gaming. Also it's really nice to "sign-in" automatically since more than one person uses my console.

If's that's all I ever use it for it's still worth it imo.

I guess that we will have to wait to what D4 has in mind for new use of Kinect in gaming. It is supposed to release Q2 2014.

P.S., my nieces and nephews love the 360 Kinect. They literally play Kinect Sports and Dance Central all day when they come over.

As someone who does not give a damn about console wars the only thing I can about the kinect right now is that it's a really good remote control for your TV. other than that I got nothing.

@Solid_Max13: hmm.. simply because it requires no controller to operate.. it scans your facial and body characteristics and implements them in the game.. Microsoft is to Sony as Apple is to Google. I was pissed when Microsoft decided to side with the opinions of gamers because they are not ready for gaming to evolve..

I think by the responses here the Kinect is not aimed at the hardcore gamer, it's mainly just a UI navigation tool because the UI sucks to use with a controller.

The other main thing to use it with is Skype, and making videos of you playing games (although quite why you would want to do that is beyond me). If they are not bullshitting about it's abilities to detect subtle movements and your heart rate (sounds like bullshit to me) they could incorporate little things in games to determine out comes of situations based on your actual reaction (not over exaggerated movements), perhaps they could use it in RPG games when you are interacting with NPCs by smiling at them or staring at them for funny responses, perhaps you could taunt enemies and use gestures such as waving to get the attention of NPCs.

If they could add that level of immersion into games then great, but I would have to see it to believe it first, the first Kinect seemed like a over hyped piece of shit. The Fighter Within does it no favours, if I was Microsoft I would have banned the release of that.

I'm not denying the potential and technology of the Kinect, it's impressive but unfortunately gaming wise it doesn't seem to belong, and it's potential is wasted on games for casual purposes and will not appeal to the hardcore crowd.

Well in Xbox Fitness it shows you on the screen, shows which muscles are being worked on the most (glowing red spots), reads your heart beat per minute, can tell if your not quiet doing the exercise properly. I also think in Kinect sports that the jetski handles extremely well, moving to which way you lean, boosting if you stomp your foot down, nearly 1-1 movements and the full game isn't out yet, so it can get better.

Apart from those two games, Skype uses it brilliantly, full body tracking, can see you even in a dark room, 1080p video conferencing, plus I got 6 months of free calls to anywhere in the world when I purchased my Xbox One. I am thoroughly impressed with Kinect 2.0 so far, and it's only the beginning, hopefully Microsoft supports it all the way to the end of the gen and more.

You will have to wait for the damn thing to have a use. Admittingly the Kinect Sports Waverace demo is pretty awesome however....but that is one demo for one game.

@Solid_Max13: I agree with that one.. But the majority of console gamers are not 'hardcore'. If you like to be alone in your room playing games then that's all good. I enjoy that when I have nothing else to do, but I also enjoy playing games with friends, in person, not online.. You can call a casual gamer or whatever, but the fact is not everyone is nerdy and anti-social..

There are only hopes and potential for the Kinect yet nothing of significants has been released for it except Ninja Fruit and Dance Games. I want there to be more games that integrate Kinect kinda like Madden did with calling audibals and saying hut with it. Hopefully Kinect stays attached to the X1 so everyone that has a X1 has a Kinect so hopefully developers will play with it and utilize it. So now all Kinect has are party games, kid friendly stuff, and potential, nothing more.
