http://www.ubergizmo.com/2014/02/kinect-guards-the-korean-border/

The Kinect peripheral for Microsoft’s Xbox gaming console is capable of accomplishing a lot of tasks, motion sensing being a major task in itself. This technology has been leveraged by Jae Kwan Ko, a self-taught coder who has set up a surveillance system based on Kinect at the demilitarized zone or DMZ between the borders of North and South Korea.

Kotaku reports that surveillance system is essentially a guard on border duty. Its able to identify living things that try to cross the border, and its competent enough to distinguish between humans and animals. If the system detects that a human is trying to cross the border, it sends a notification to the relevant authorities. Speaking with Hankooki, Ko said that he never though this system would perform “national defense tasks.” The site also claims that this system is set to be upgraded in the near future, with the ability to detect heartbeats, something which the Xbox One Kinect can very well do. Obviously South Korea hasn’t replaced all border guards along the DMZ with Kinect units, humans will stand guards at all times just like before.

Kinect, protecting your investments since 2010.

The cell of this gen.

Cell= a BS code name for a hard to program CPU

Kinect= A 1080p motion tracking camera that takes voice commands.

Kinect does exactly what it's supposed to do and the cell never did, they are hardly comparable. With the Kinect 2.0 we've just gotten a responsive enough device to make good kinect games, we just need to wait for them.

There have been far superior security camera's out there for a long time now. I worked at a place with HD camera's that could zoom in and auto-ID people's faces and was capable of categorizing people's behaviour as normal, aggressive, climbing, falling, nervous, etc. And unlike the Kinect it actually worked consistently.

That was like 10 years ago but I bet they've been around way longer than that at high security facilities.

True, but it must be pretty expensive. I think they might just be trying to use the Kinect as a cheap alternative.

Hey, advertisement! You don't always hear about military using new tech but when you do, it's advertisement.

Yeah but Fighter Within is a piss poor example of what Kinect is now capable of, it was a rushed game to meet the launch window and nothing more.

A joke in poor human (double joke in there human/humor); The next terrorist attack will likely not use airplanes, bombs, or World of Warcraft accounts (deeper pun, or herein DP), but will most likely use video gaming consoles, the Xbox1 and Kinect specifically, to locate specific people based on their personalized advertisement profiles, facial expressions, and sleeping patterns (DP, always-on). They can then wiki-leak (DP) the individuals information to the public. Fortunately for Microsoft, this process voids their warranty.(dp) ....

.. I could do this all day, really. (dp, grammar sensitive response)

kinect sucks for gaming but most of the other uses are amazing.
