Gamers are obsessed with having choices in their games, having open ended sandbox games that fit the bill of Fallout 3 and Skyrim. These games don't have the creativity and passion that games like Bayonetta and Catherine have.

Many Japanese games are wacky and inventive, whereas lots of Western games just rip of movies.

Call of Duty - Apocalypse Now, Enemy at the Gates, Fight Club, Terminator 2 etc...

Uncharted - Indiana Jones, Lawrence of Arabia etc...

Dragon Age Origins - Lord of the Rings etc...

Mass Effect - The Bladerunner, Star Wars etc...

Now if you just look at games like Mario & Bayonetta. Tell me what movies they rip off ?

Western games may be a few steps ahead in terms of popularity and technology, but Japan will allways be ahead in terms of creativity.

Most of western games' creativity comes from the Arcade titles. The retail games are quite bland.

Wackiness is a tradition that pervades their culture.

American mainstream games are obsessed with a Renaissance-type mentality where everything has to be as "realistic" as possible.

In contrast, Japan takes pride in their wackiness and tries to deliberately flaunt it.

Sometimes it works (Nintendo)...other times it doesn't (niche stuff).

I would have to side with American games just because they try and push the limits of gaming, while Japanese games like to try and push the limits of insanity.

If it hadn't been for all that Western radioactivity, Japan would've never evolved to the state where they would've given us great games like No More Heroes, Okamiand Devil May Cry.

So you have the West to thank for your Japanese creativity.

Bayonetta must be the only game you have played this gen ? There have been a massive list of excellent Japanese titles to come out this gen,Tales of Vesperia, Vanquish, Galaxy 2, Crisis Core, P3P, Skyward Sword, Sin & Punishment 2, Catherine, No More Heroes, Disgaea 3/4, Sonic Generations...... Japan keeps puming out the games even though they don't sell well at all, and thats because companys like Atlus Sega and Nintendo are the only ones catering to the hardcore gamer these days.

All opinions broski. Japanese develop their art styles from manga and anime. When they make a game they seem to want their world to start from scratch. Where as western developers like to use a pre-existing world. I prefer Western games to Japanese, but I don't go around saying Western > Japanese, because I know my opinions aren't fact.

I am an Air Traffic Controller 3. It's not to everyone's tastes. But, I like it.

Japanese games are probably influenced by manga and anime. That's what happens when 30% of printed material in your country is a comic book. But it goes both ways. Japanese media as a whole is influenced by their own aesthetics. Not everything in games is necessarily "from manga and anime." It's just drawn from a common aesthetic base and a common perspective. This is true of western games of well. How much do you think WRPGs are influenced by LOTR? Probably a lot, more often than not. Chances are, Mass Effect has its influences in western media as well. But this doesn't mean that western game is simply lifted from something that exists already.

That being said, are you suggesting that every game story has simply been lifted from manga and anime? That games don't have original worlds?

Disgaea has not change from PS2, nether has tales, don't get me stated on CC, Sin and punishment is the same bullet hell shooter it wason the n64. I forgot about No more heroes,it's added to the list. Sonic generation is a rehashed of Sonic 2. Skyword sword is way too late with the thing it added on. Catherine is also a fun game I forgot and Vanquish...can be beat in 5 hours.... And Bayonetta still is better than ever thing you listed....... That is nothing compered to the western line up.

That has to be my major gripe with quite a few western franchises. I'm so sick of the realistic look. I want creativity, imagination, something that I can't have in real life. I mean for gods sake, if I want to count the hairs on a grown man's face (just using this as an example of how some folks like their ultra realistic graphics) I'll go a day without shaving. A game for me should be crazy, imaginative and well in some extent wacky. It should not be a failed copy paste of the real world.

Do you mean RPG or in General? There are a lot of good games from both sides, I personally enjoy Traditional RPG(world map Turned based lengthy story) than the current trend. Which none of them seem to be doing :| while shooting games I guess European developers do the better job at those IMO, Adventure Europe/*** and fighting.. ***....

Call of Duty - Apocalypse Now, Enemy at the Gates, Fight Club, Terminator 2 etc...

xXShortroundXx

Fight Club? Terminator 2? What?

... you know what, I'll give you Terminator 2.

And Fight Club the movie was based on a book by the same name.

Uncharted - Indiana Jones, Lawrence of Arabia etc...

xXShortroundXx

Lawrence of Arabia? Sure I haven't played Uncharted 3 yet, and I definitely remember the reference to the Seven Pillars of Wisdom in the trailer. But how is Uncharted a rip off of a movie that looks to portray the life of T. E. Lawrence in Arabia?

Dragon Age Origins - Lord of the Rings etc...

Mass Effect - The Bladerunner, Star Wars etc...

xXShortroundXx

I'll give you Dragon Age, though again, that came out of the books and Star Wars did not invent the Space Opera genre.

Bladerunner has nothing to do with Mass Effect, and it was based on one of Philip K. Dick's work--very loosely based though.

That said, I could relate Bayonetta to a lot of anime out there. I'll give you Mario though.

In Japan, it's not uncommon to see strange concepts being put out. For flight simmers or aviation enthusiasts, games like it are more than welcome even though it's not exactly a flight sim.

bayonetta? you mean that game which is actually based on a bunch of witchcraft and occultism books? ooohh...how original! as if they hadnt made a bunch of films about that.

and bayonetta is lame, bayonetta needed to abuse sexuality just to call the attention, that makes the whole thing lame.

and mario is like any knight's history...a hero who goes through a bunch of ordeals, enters a castle to rescue a princess from a dragon's clutches.

Not to self own myself as I am not entirely sure of the facts, but didn"t the japanese basically steal the whole videogame thing from the west?

It seems to me that The Japanese are really talented at taking someones ideas and making them better.

Not to self own myself as I am not entirely sure of the facts, but didn"t the japanese basically steal the whole videogame thing from the west?

It seems to me that The Japanese are really talented at taking someones ideas and making them better.

The first video game was originally made in America.

The first video game console was originally made in America.

The birth of the Japanese RPG (Dragon Quest) was because of the existence of games like Wizardry...again, made in America.

I'm not big on Japanese games except those from Nintendo. But, I like this:

I am an Air Traffic Controller 3. It's not to everyone's tastes. But, I like it.

I've been to Haneda Airport and Narita Airport so many times. The voices in this game are hauntingly authentic.

It's not that it's a talent they kinda have to for it to sell around the world, see japan doesn't have itself a lot of natural resources for market so it buys stuff from other countries and makes stuff from that and sells it. So they have to meet a certain kind of professionalism to survive while the west which holds the biggest population of customers for markets can get away with doing crap because in here we are paid to get things done not for it to be done the finest way possible. Video games are looked down upon here, it's like a secret culture in society that they don't want to admit exists.

[QUOTE="peterw007"]

Wackiness is a tradition that pervades their culture.

American mainstream games are obssessed with a Renaissance-type mentality where everything has to be as "realistic" as possible.

In contrast, Japan takes pride in their wackiness and tries to deliberately flaunt it.

Sometimes it works (Nintendo)...other times it doesn't (niche stuff).

-

I would have to side with American games just because they try and push the limits of gaming, while Japanese games like to try and push the limits of insanity.

MLBknights58

That has to be my major gripe with quite a few western franchises. I'm so sick of the realistic look. I want creativity, imagination, something that I can't have in real life. I mean for gods sake, if I want to count the hairs on a grown man's face (just using this as an example of how some folks like their ultra realistic graphics) I'll go a day without shaving. A game for me should be crazy, imaginative and well in some extent wacky. It should not be a failed copy paste of the real world.

Then you are looking at the wrong Western games. Go see Rayman Origins, Bastion, etc.

Japan was never an inventing country but they are good in modifying and improving things.

Western games may be a few steps ahead in terms of popularity and technology, but Japan will allways be ahead in terms of creativity.

xXShortroundXx

Nope. West is more creative, both in gameplay and in settings. You're just making mistake of not playing PC games more.
