Now that the definitive version of the game has been released ( thanks lems for betatesting ; ) I can undoubtedly confirm that the new Tomb Raider is better than all previous Uncharted installments. If the previous game was slightly below Uncharted 2, this time Rise of Tomb Raider beats Uncharted 2 fair and square.

What makes Rise of Tomb Raider superior ? It's just a bigger and better game.

1. Exploration.

Big areas to explore with its secrets, collectibles and secondary missions provide a nice a break from the main action sequences. Levels are not linear, unlike Uncharted and provide backtracking. Some areas require re visiting once you unlocked a new special gear that will unlock yuo new areas of the game, like in Batman,

2. Survival elements

Adds big to the immersion. The Siberian landscapes are awesome, and detailed climate effects make you shiver in your cozy warm chair when playing the game.

3. Crafting

Adds to the variety of combat, introduces additional tactical layer to the encounters and just gives the purpose to all the junk you collect along the way.

4. RPG elements

It's not deep, but still gives you purpose to go after so many collectibles scattered across the map.

5. Graphics.

The best looking third person game to date. Runs great on my humble gtx 780 on high preset at 1440p. Definitely a notch above Uncharted Remastered on PS4.

6. It gives me a break. I love that Rise of TR just gives me a slack from time to time, unlike Uncharted which is unending "Go go go. Next action sequence, next sequence. Don't stop !!!". In the end, I just end up beating Uncharted in 7 hours and left with nothing to play. In Rise of TR i just can pause between main action sequences and go hunting bunnies or dears, explore some caves and just stand still contemplating beautiful Siberian landscapes from a cliff, with cold winter blowing my hair, just mediating on stuff, like, for example, "What am I doing with my life. why I am wasting my time on SW : P "

Uncharted 4 had better bring something new to the table, it has big shoes to fill.

PS. I am pretty sure that some of you nerds will ask me, Why is it official that Rise of Tomb Raider is better than Uncharted 1,2,3.

Well...because bite me.

Good to hear, I'm excited to play it. Hope I'd love it because I didn't like the reboot that much.

I thought the 2013 TR game was better than the Uncharted series. ROTTR is good too but I liked the original reboot story better. This story felt more like a setup for Lara's nemesis like the pre-reboot had in its arc. Anyhow, ROTTR'S story flew over my head until second playthrough, but still an improvement in gameplay department, most notably to replay sections of the game does a lot for me, and score attack is incentive try again and again, making it more action packed package than just the initial campaign.

Uncharted's story I didn't find as interesting against it's production values. I wanted it to be a better shooter and it never achieved that. By the third game I totally lost interest. Even Max Payne 3 being regarded as trying to encroach on Uncharted territory totally stole the show with its solid shooter mechanics and and gritty atmosphere making it an utter joy to play. I remember a few articles making the comparison basically saying Naught Dog needs to step up Uncharteds shoter game. Maybe they listened. The upcoming 4th game looks to have a lot of potential in that area.

Funny that some people consider backtracking to be something good now. I hate it more than escort missions. And the graphics are better than PS3 games? Well, that's good to hear :D

Already finished the first game of the reboot last gen but I'm about to replay the definitive edition on my XBone thanks to GWG. Really enjoyed it. Will get RoTR for the Xbawx, too, I guess when it hits the bargain bin.

But seriously, backtracking. Lulz...

It's a game totally without its own soul. Almost everything that you mentioned there wasn't added because it makes for a more cohesive package. It was added because they just wanted to throw in as much useless crap as they can. Do RPG mechanics and crafting fit into this type of game? No? Throw them in anyways, make it a blurb to put it on the back of the box.

The collectibles and most of the content is just mindless busiwork. It's the Ubisoft approach to world design: Fill your world with a bunch of shit to do but forget to actually make it fun.

It makes me sick that these games are so popular, and that they're somehow considered better than some of the older TR games. They're mindless, soulless products designed by committees to take advantage of brand awareness and they're totally devoid of anything fun or meaningful. If you like these games you're part of the problem.

In what world is TR 2013 just below Uncharted 2? It's not nearly as good. All your knocks against Uncharted are lame, arguably only 3 didn't maintain a good use of quiet time (and it still had plenty), 2 and Golden Abyss did this particularly well, hell even Uncharted 1 was alright with it.

The only objectively better things are easy, 1440p and 60 FPS are dope. Still, despite having not played RotR, I have very big reason to doubt your compliments of its elements when 2013 did some of them poorly. The survival element was trash, the Metroidvania, backtracking, and crafting, along with the RPG elements all felt unecessary and didn't hook me in any way, exploring was minimally rewarded at best, especially with those lame excuses for tombs. Not saying that RotR can't be a significant improvement - Uncharted 1 to 2 exists - but I'm doubtful on some fronts.

Gonna play it on the One this week.

that seems pretty subjective. I enjoyed the reboot and ROTR more than the Uncharted games because the mechanics were simply better. Sneaking was clumsy in those games and combat was a chore. Uncharted has better writing and setpieces but the actual game parts are way stronger in the new TR games. They are just more fun to play.

Uncharted 2 felt like a complete game though. I began question other genres because coop was fun multilayer ripped of the perk system but was fun dynamics maps just very creative. Taken account all that and its better and bigger then Uncharted 2? Sold because also I just saw a $35 sale lol.

That's be interesting to hear why. Not that I care to be contrary but just saying most people largely regard Uncharted 2 as the best in the series, and that's probably been the general consensus for a long while. BUT, given the recent Uncharted collection, and them eliminating the motion controls for better play, and upgrading the visual assets, I can believe the original game can be held in higher regard than when it was first released.

@jhonMalcovich: with your logic any technical rpg is better than u2. Im glad you enjoy the game so much. And with your logic it took half a decade and and a whole gen to be "technically" this is a sad to those with clear. If anything you just adverted the game your teying to through shade on. Thanks maybe the in five six more there will be a "technically" better tomb raider than uc4. If what you seem to have observed repeats.

I felt the last Tomb Raider was better then all the Uncharteds, but i think it depends on your taste, i love Tomb Raiders exploration, and its what i dislike most about Uncharteds.

Uncharted 2 was fantastic, didn't like 1 or 3 at all though. Also didn't like the last Tomb Raider much (other than graphics and controls), but love Rise of The Tomb raider, much better than 2013's TR game imo. Has more tombs, more puzzles and tomb raiding, also has more of the TR feel to it. Great graphics and atmosphere to!

I would say Rise of the tomb raider and Uncharted 2 are vastly better than the others (Uncharted 1, 3 and Tomb Raider 2013)

You'd kind of hope RotTR would surpass Uncharted mechanically since it came out 6 years after and is a whole generation ahead of Uncharted 2. Now compare it to The Last of Us and the upcoming Uncharted 4.

Official...like any one cares what you think. We will see how ROTR stacks up against an Uncharted game made in the last 5 years. The Last Of Us shows Naughty Dog is still easily the superior studio.

Agree with this 100%, I thought the reboot was just more fun to play than all the Uncharted games. The story in ROTR is better than the last game and they scaled back on how many setpieces there are but they double down on what made the first game fun. It was miles ahead of anything they've shown from Uncharted 4 so far.

I'm guessing the point of this thread by Little Johnny is 'PC is teh bestest' or something like that.

Do you realise it's possible to like ROTTR and also U4 if you're a gamer who likes great games and not just some juvenile pathetic dweeb on the internet bleating on about something being 'the best'?

We seriously need an age restriction on posts on this forum. 12 and over would count Little Johnny out but let's all agree it would be no great loss.

Another thing to keep in mind, what does Tomb Raider has and Uncharted 1/2/3 doesn't? Lara has the deadliest weapon, the Bow/Arrow. The Bow is what makes Tomb Raider/Rise of the Tomb Raider so unique, I wish Uncharted 1/2/3 had the Bow that Lara uses.
