For me, it was The Last of Us. What's yours?

Tough this year... Tlou was amazing. Though I took issue with some things. gtaV really nailed it... Ac4 came out of nowhere to be ridiculously addicting... Ugh dragon's crown was soooo good. and then theres glorous resogun mm, right now I'd say gta I think.
That said I have mostly played 2012 games this year, so my backlog is big.
The Last of Us took my personal GOTY for the incredible story telling and interesting gameplay. Tomb Raider was a close second though. They did an incredible job rebooting the franchise and did it in a way that was exactly what needed to be done. After playing various games that came out with bow mechanics, TR's bow mechanics are the best IMO and just playing fun. Also satisfying when you hit some jerk in the eye with an arrow.
My Game of the Year;
Killzone Shadow Fall
Knack
The Last of us
Puppeteer
COD:Ghost 1080p+60fps
Assassins Creed Black Fla 1080p+60fps+Exclusive content
Rachet and Clank: Into nexus
Still No Mentions of Arkham Origins and Splinter Cell Blacklist ?
I'm guessing nobody played them.
Arkham Origins is a good game, but it's not GOTY material.
@ Doom_HellKnight
Thats a Steaming Pile of Crap and you know it. Explain to me how a game that copied that the formula that made its predecessors GOTY winners not be GOTY material ? Whatever bad/good things have to say about Origins will most definately apply to Arkham City, this is a scenario were more of the same is a plus. go ahead, I got all night ! :p

You gotta be on the Sony payroll

I'm there with ya bro. Blacklist and Arkham were stellar imo.
GTAV, but Bioshock Infinite is close.
I loved Bioshock Infinite when I played it, but somehow people kept pointing out all the things wrong with it after I completed it, and then I saw them myself, and since I just don't find the game that good anymore. It's really weird and hard to explain, and somehow it has only ever happened in this way to Bioshock for me; it went from my GOTY all the way down to 'eh, it was alright' in a short space of time.

I had somehow totally forgotten about Blacklist.
Love it, I cannot say if it's my game of the year or not though, since I am yet to complete it; but it's certainly up there.
Metal Gear Rising
Well said. I'll have to add that to my runners up list, but GTA 5 is still King imo.
My candidates are
-Pikmin 3
-Super Mario 3D World
-Rayman Legends
All examples of superb gameplay and immaculate design coupled with satisfying challenge (my criteria for a great game)
Honourable mentions: AC4, DMC, ALBW

That's why i usually ignore those 'let's hate good games because it's cool' threads :p
I beat it twice (one on normal and the other on hard) explored every corner, heard every side conversation to learn the lore and story, and that's how i'll remember the game. It does have some plot holes, but no game is perfect.
My pick would be between
AssCreed 4
GTA 5
Super Mario 3D world
The Legend of Zelda: A link between Worlds (yep a handheld game is in the running)
Tomb Raider
The odd omission is TLoU, while I recognise that it is a good game, I can not bring myself to like it for some reason.

Haha, but that's the weird thing, people can normally pick apart any game in front of me, even my favourites like Dark Souls, and I will still happily play the game and still be a favourite, even if I understand where they're coming from....
Just Bioshock Infinite.... I have no idea why that's different.
@seanmcloughlin: I go off straight enjoyment... Ac4 is easily one of the most enjoyable games I've played in 2013... It would be a crime if I DIDNT mention it. :P I want to pick Zelda ALBW but I decided to save it for my kids for xmas... Moments like passing off a Zelda game that good to my kids is too important to not make a spectacle of.
It's not time yet. It's only November 24th. I'll tell you January 1st, 2014.
These are the games in the running though:
- DmC: Devil May Cry
- Grand Theft Auto V (incomplete)
- Batman: Arkham Origins (incomplete)
The only one I've greatly enjoyed was DmC. So it'll probably end up being my GOTY, sadly enough.
Tomb Raider.
Even though I have put over 150 hours into GTA, I found Tomb Raider to be a pretty special experience. It does so much right and feels incredibly fresh.
Soul Sacrifice - GOTY
GTAV was a let down; the missions are tidious not fun, storyline boring, I honestly enjoy saints row the third more (not saying GTAV needed to be outrageous)
I think DmC is the only game I am very interested to play that I haven't
I'm between The Last of Us and Fire Emblem, Bioshock Infinite was a candidate for a while, but it came short in the end...let's see if Super Mario 3D World or Zelda A Link Between Worlds change this.
Also, when talking about "old" games i just played this year i have to say, The Walking Dead is a masterpiece and probably my favorite game this year overall.
