haha, that video is hilarious.
The only thing I don't understand is, if the princess is a princess then why do they live in a shitty house?

No. He's a chubby Italian plumber in red overalls and the concept of sinking even a dime into evolving his purpose into anything more than what we've accepted is pointless.
You're missing the point entirely (and also decades of change and progress in the series) if you think Mario has been the same and/or needs to evolve.
@charizard1605:
This is why in reality nintendo is the most mature of the bunch. They are GAME DESIGNERS. Mario could be a fucking ball and it wouldn't matter. The majority of the gaming community sees it the other way around. They see the paint but not the structure.
So, you want Mario games to be boring cinematics with little to no gameplay? Well you're playing the wrong genre then.
@Bread_or_Decide: One major reason why it's a Black Sheep of the Mario Games is that it's the only one that actually has a Plot. Heck Nintendo went as far as to include Voice Acting.
Also 64 is overrated.
How many Mario games involves Mario beating Bowser to save the Princess? Now compare that to the amount of Mario platformers where the goal isn't to save the Princess.
Oh yeah, lots of them of course, but your post made it seem like that's all its ever been. It's not true of Mario platformers and it's certainly not even close when you factor in other Mario games. Hence me saying - not true.
If you want to argue the majority then sure, but that brings us to the next part of my comment - don't care.
Sorry man, you don't have much of a topic here tbh. It's obvious that most people don't put much weight in the story of Mario games, just as people don't play Minecraft for its graphics, or Elder Scrolls for its combat. It's a non-issue.
Beyond that, you're just wrong since there are quite a few Mario games that do have different stories.
I think we should talk about food though, I love a good food topic.
I personally loved Rosalina and her backstory in Galaxy. It felt so .. warm, added a little more charm to a already breathtaking game.
I wouldn't mind more of that minimalistic tidbits of plot thrown in Mario games that fit right at home.
Yeah, no doubt man, it doesn't really bother me and in some cases it adds a nice touch. And what was great about SMG is that you could go view the story at your own pace.
I was just trying to stress how unimportant it really is though. Story isn't what kept me coming back to Mario for almost 30 years now. It's all about that pitch perfect platforming and tight, creative level design layered under that timeless Mario aesthetic. The story is just so far off in the background and more often than not it just feels like a minor speed bump in my awesome gameplay experience.
I already called it. Open world mushroom kingdom. A rabid Goomba bit a Toad and it spread like wild fire. The mushroom kingdom gets destroyed by feral fungal monsters. A middle aged Mario who lost his brother in the initial outbreak has to escort a young Daisy who got bit by a fungibeast and is immune across the mushroom kingdom to the laboratory where the cure will be extracted from her corpse. But along the way his journey with Daisy returns his humanity and he is faced with a moral crisis. Save the kingdom but sacrifice the girl who truly saved him? Or sacrifice the world so that the girl can live?
When the jumps and turtle shells don't work Mario has a array of guns and can upgrade his guns and build shanks from bits and pieces he finds across the post apocalyptic wasteland.
I think this is what the OP was looking for.
We've been saving the same damn princess since 1985 and nothing really has changed. Sure we went 3D and into outer space, big deal. At the end of the day the goal is still the same, kill Bowser and save Peach.
Why is Nintendo so afraid of changing things up in terms of plot?
one of the oldest sayings -"if it aint broke dont fix it".
Also one of the most counter intuitive ones.
Changing Mario's story would be so damn easy. Too bad Nintendo really does not give a single oz of ****.
@charizard1605: aren't we saying the same thing. ..? The Mario narrative doesn't need to change because the Mario narrative is the gag for why I'm playing these deliciously well realized games which revolve around pure gameplay. Mario saving the Princess has always simply been the vehicle to place us into a game world. evolution in the series needs only come through the gameplay itself.
I find it hard pressed to believe there is anyone sitting around believing Mario games have spun some worthy narrative for 30 years or that the narrative has even mattered outside of the big picture premise, "save the Princess." shit, part of Mario's lasting charm is the fact that you can go from console to console, revision to revision and one thing remains constant.... Save the Princess.
Hey, it's a better story than Destiny!

Sorry, I completely misunderstood your post, good sir. I blame the fact that I was sneaking it in while at work :p
@charizard1605: see that it never happens again! :P
Work... Sigh. Its 6:15am where I am, I could sleep all morning, but it seems that quality sleep no longer exists in life after you have kids. :/ some day I dream of sleeping like I did when I was in high school.
Christopher Nolan should add his spin to it.
Mario: "WHERE'S THE PRINCESSS?" "SWEAR TO MEEEEE"
Bad Guy: "who... who are you?"
Mario: "IT'S A MEEEEE MARIOOOOO" *Mario headbutts bad guy.

"tears"
That would turn it into real art. Not this jumping on turtle heads or wth that plumber's fetish is. Ugh so immature. We need a touching story, 1 hour cutscene of Mario explaining why he cares about the princess so much and why Bowser is such a bad bad turtle.
I dunno there has been quite a bit of variation in the stories except the part of saving the princess, but I never cared much about it. They are all pretty simple and meaningless, seem to be more for kids, and I skip them when I can.
The Zelda stories can be like a Disney-fied fairytale (with which I mean, very childlike) but I can enjoy those more than the Mario ones.
Just because the story is non-existent doesn't mean they should just stick to the status quo going forward. I mean is New Super Mario Bros U really that different from Mario 3 or Super Mario World? You know games that are over 20 yrs old.
BTW, I'm talking about the main Mario games, which are platformers. Mario RPG is a totally different kind of game.
Why does Mario need a different story? What importance of having him do something else will change your experience playing the games?
You didn't specify which games you were talking about. I rebutted with examples of Mario games with drastically different stories.
Also, if you want something different, have you played Super Mario Bros. 2 or Yoshi's Island? Mario platformers with a totally different story.
The NA version of Super Mario Bros. 2 wasn't originally a Mario game. Yoshi's Island came out a long ass time ago. I'm talking about new games going forward need a change of pace story wise.
@emgesp: Holy crap, talk about moving the goalposts. First, it's any Mario game since you didn't specify. Then after I have examples that had different stories, that changed again to recent games. You can't argue worth a damn. Your point is moot as you have been proven wrong by several people now. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Straight out of Reddit, a fan theory by u/drunkrobot97 about the significant role Princess Peach provides.
TL:DR version- Making peace in a kingdom with numerous ethnic groups is never easy to do, and Peach happens to be very good at it.

It is broke though
1) Where do black people fit into this picture? Why are there no colored people in the Marioverse?
2) "Damsel in distress" is a sexist theme to have in a game, it implies women are weak and need to be saved - this needs to be redone for modern society. Peach should be saving Mario, not the other way around.

Haha, I get what you are saying. Maybe one day when yor kids are all grown up you can get some sleep for yourself :p

Yeah, that's SW for you.
Nobody can just say "well shit, I was wrong.." Nope, gotta modify the argument until you 'win'.
And even some of the newer games, THE NEWEST GAME for example, have done different things with the story haha.
CoD and madden have static gameplay with stagnating levels of improvement. Mario saving the princess is just a backdrop to the main story. The gameplay is the main story and its radically improved every iteration. Dynamically different in function as well.
Not to mention Super Mario 3D World was a different story.
