Did VR come and go already? Stats released by Valve state that VR sales for the pass two months has almost come to a complete stop. Info released by Valve's data is saying VR had almost no growth at all on Steam since July and zero growth in August.

This might come as a shock for some, but i think many knew this thing might fail. Not sure what this means for the future of VR, but it seems pretty clear that VR is not appealing to gamers as of now.

What do you think system wars? Do you think VR can make a come back? Do you think itll slowly grow into a new form of gaming? Now that yall know more about VR and many have tried it, was wondering what everyone thought of the latest news.

Oh hell no its not dead yet thats just fear mongering haters.

Its just too expensive right now we need the price to hit a nice 200 dollar price tag for a good headset might take long time tho.

200-300 dollars will be a real nice sweet spot for most people. the 800 vive is absurd thats way too high.

The only thing I'd declare "dead" is my interest in it. I bought the Gear VR, which I know is not even close to being the same as Rift or Vive, but it has given me enough information to know that I don't want to consume content of any kind this way........except maybe for porn.

@ProtossRushX: Steam stats dont lie mate. You can get VR cheap by using your phone. Maybe Google Daydream can save the day.

VR was destined to fail from the start. It is a niche. I won't even call it a fad because something needs to be popular for a period of time and there is no interest in the mass market for VR. The only people who care is a very small sector of hardcore gamers.

@NathanDrakeSwag: Good point there, it didnt even make it to fad status. It got and gets a lot of hype on the internet, but we all know hype dont equal sales.

We'll have to see how VR fairs in ps4 and XBone's market before we can really count it out of the picture.

Still too expensive. A gaming PC with decent VR capabilities will cost you in the range of 800$. Add the headset that is 400-600$ and VR costs you at the very least 1200$. Most people aren't willing to pay that much for gaming.

@Juub1990: Yeah, but one problem is, those who are spending the money, arent really enjoying it much. Its never good when that happens. You want small growth month by month, but you want growth.

They could be very bad for all the studios who took a gamble on VR. Lots of people will be losing millions and many, many jobs.

I haven't seen techdemos sell systems so fast since Playstation Eye, Kinect and Wii motion controls xD

Plus all the room and effort it takes to get it going... Current VR isn't applicable to a lot people's situations just yet.

But it'll improve.

It's not mainstream yet and there aren't any great games tailor-made for VR. It's still in its infancy stage. PSVR should give it a huge boost and more devs will be interested in developing their games from the ground-up with VR in mind. What sells a system is the price and the software. So far VR has neither a good price nor good games.

That's because VR is not ready for full game experiences yet. It is only made for short, shallow experiences best consumed in small doses. Even Sony said VR is best played in short bursts which is not something that should be expected for such a pricey investment.

Will VR be something special in 15-20 years? Who knows. But right now the tech just ain't there for it to be anything more than a novelty, the interest from consumers ain't there, the hardware is way too big to be comfortable or look cool and it costs too much.

Well, shame to hear because it seems like a very pricey investment for something that can only be enjoyed for so long.

I imagine if you wear VR for hours on end it can cause discomfort. Also the hardware needs to be very powerful to allow for a constant FPS so that there is no eye distress.

VR is just getting started. Anybody that has ever tried room-scale VR on the Vive knows that VR is the next big thing in gaming. Two things just need to happen for the VR market to become bigger:

1. The price needs to drop which will happen just like it does for all new, innovative technologies that start off very expensive and only sells to the enthusiast market at first but then eventually becomes more mainstream as the price drops. People forget that VR is no more expensive than VCRs, DVD players, and Bluray players were when they were first released.

2. More people need to try it. Room-scale VR is something that you have to try before you can truly understand what is so great about it. Watching videos or reading about it is not going to do it justice. I've had friends and family who were very skeptical of VR before they tried it and I could tell that they thought that I wasted my money, but after they tried room-scale VR on the Vive, everyone of them now wants a Vive. Over time, more and more people will try room-scale VR and then more and more people will want it. And notice how I'm not just saying VR, I'm saying room-scale VR. If you have tried any VR headset besides room-scale VR on the Vive then you have not experienced anywhere close to what VR can offer. VR without room-scale is just a gimmick that gets old quickly, but VR with room-scale is the most amazing thing I've ever experienced in gaming.

It can cause discomfort from just playing for 20mins. I take a bunch of breaks while playing. And games that move quick take more of a toll. You can really start to fatigue and get dizzy after while. I have this shooter game that makes me dizzy after bout 15 mins cause you have to move left, right, up, down so much with your head.

I have a room dedicated to VR gaming and nothing has given me such a delighted grin.

This feeling I get is even better than when I first experienced a 3d game compared to a 2d one.

I was playing Rec Room on the HTC Vive and it was way more fun than I thought it would be.

I met a chinese guy and even though I could not understand his language I was still able to play a game of ping pong with him.

When I hit the ball off the table I saw him looking around for the ball and all I had to do was point to it for him to find it and resume playing.

I also played paint ball with 4 vs 4. The top opposing player was decimating our team and I was able to hit him while he hit me at the same time. We gave each other a high five and the game ended right after.

Despite being thousands of miles away and not understanding each others' language you can still communicate well enough with motion and have a blast.

I also tried out another short VR experience where you play the main role in a ballet performance. You play as a prince searching for an item of immortality.

The finale of the performance left a grin on my face. I am not sure why but it was such a spectacular experience seeing the female form dancing around my character, she even starts to float through the air.

It is an indescribable feeling when your brain interprets what is happening as something with real substance, especially when that thing gets up close to you and you feel like you are going to touch it.

I also played a lot of Space Pirate Trainer and found myself taking positions I normally don't use in other VR games.

I was ducking and strafing about to dodge lasers shot at by small floating robots. I also crouched low and raised my arm that had a shield to block shots coming from above then at the same time I used my other arm to aim to the side to shoot down any other enemies.

I've tried a boxing game which had me holding the controllers in such a way that I could comfortably hold a boxing stance against the A.I. opponents.

I worked up quite a sweat trying to block and strike back.

A case could be made that the affluent early adopter market for VR has been saturated but that is no gauge of popular demand. There are also rumors that PSVR might work on PC, and if that is the case, then VR will be democratized dramatically more quickly than first anticipated.

But in a space where a $600 console was considered a sacrilege, freaking out over the $700 thing not being a popular success out the gate is myopic at best.

@RyviusARC: Have to agree with that. Its why i love Nintendo so much cause i can play games with people all over the world even though i dont understand their language. I love how they use the emotes to communicate and how it auto translates.

I also love the non talking. I cant stand games where people talk and try to tell you how to do stuff etc. Most times people are arses or act childish on voice chat. And other times, you just dont feel like talking.

@NathanDrakeSwag: I never liked party chat on WoW, etc either. You always get that annoying party member in your crew who your too nice to tell to just fack off. They be bugging you like every time you sign on. he, wanna play, hey wanna, hey wanna play. Hell no i dont want to play, you talk too much. Get the fack out my guild!

J/k, i just try and hide from them or pretend to be busy. I always just like typing. But sometimes we werent allowed to type in raids and pvp, etc, we had to use voice chat.

I don't think it's ready for the mainstream. It's too expensive, as many have already said, and it needs more content that shows off the power of the experience.

Personally, I don't think it'll be worthwile until Star Trek's Holodeck is invented. But that's just me being a negative Nancy.

No it's not. It's just that the market has been tapped out at the current price range for VR.

At these massive prices for what is currently little more than a gimmick until devs figure out the best uses for VR and build the library, it's just not worth it. It was never going to be a major seller until the price drops.

If the price gets to around $200, I'll get the PSVR. I'm not going to pay more than that for an add on. Until then, VR doesn't really matter to me.

It just started, dude. VR is probably one of the least dead things in gaming. People not wanting to shell out 600 bucks for a huge helmet which demands very powerful PC hardware for a "pretty cool" expereince does not = VR is dead.

It never really taken off. The VR novelty wears off faster than motion control novelty in gaming. VR is only really good in short burst like stage demos and maybe even theme park rides. There's really no demand for it in the usual gaming business. Sure some gamers will still get VR titles but VR titles will hardly unlikely top the charts. It's cool that companies could show off their systems could handle VR tech but to really push hard for it to divine their system is very risky, good luck to Sony lol.

It's not dead, it isn't even out yet. People really need to stop hating on new tech. With that said, I think the hardware just isn't good enough to convince gamers to buy it on a mass level. It'll be more niche. After trying the PSVR I'll wait a gen until they make a better quality headset. Or maybe try a vive or rift if it comes compatible with the scorpio. Sony dropped the ball trying to make it more price friendly and made a pretty poor VR experience

It's not going to be a major seller until the mainstream can use it. A custom built PC with a 970GTX at least is not what many people have. The hardware requirements and price of entry are going to be too much of a hurdle for a long time.
