From the post about if MS will start next gen early and MS needs to drop the X1 price threads it always comes up that the X1 is either doing poorly or doing well. I don't really see and consensus one way or another though so I figured I would ask it directly. So basically if there was no PS4 and the X1 was selling the same amount as it is now would those numbers be terrible , decent or good in your opinion ?

I think it's doing rather well despite many fanboys attempts to spread lies and constantly beat it down.

In B4 sold-in numbers are paraded around as sold-through.

The honest answer is, since MS hasn't given any concrete numbers for how many XBones have sold to actual customers since Q3 of 2014, it's impossible to tell. Even the "It's selling better than the 360 did" soundbite could mean to retailers at this point.

Its doing as well as any console does at this point in it's life

http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2014/08/11/why-its-perfectly-fine-if-microsoft-has-lost-400m-on-xbox-one/

'The $400M figure itself was not the point of this article, but many are pointing out the math leading to all these headlines is misguided. These numbers reflect gross margin, not profit and loss, and are increases, not totals. While we can use that data to approximate $7.1B in revenues compared to $5B in costs, without further information from Microsoft, it’s hard to pinpoint an exact profit or loss on the Xbox One. Though if they have lost money on the system so far, it’s for the reasons I go into below, and would not be cause for alarm.'

'Microsoft’s collection of anti-fans loves to use any opportunity to try and take the company down a peg. The detractors of Nintendo or Sony do the same when the headlines suit them. But the reality is far less sinister than the big numbers and alarmist forecasts suggest. The truth? It’s perfectly normal for Microsoft to lose even a hefty sum when launching a new platform like the Xbox One.'

'It’s exceedingly rare that a new video game console would immediately start printing money from its hardware alone this soon after launch. Sony may be having better luck with the PS4, but they’re the exception, not the rule in this case, and a typical console launch looks more like what Microsoft is experiencing now (not to mention there are still larger problems with Sony itself that drag down the accomplishments of their video game division).'

Bad after the success of 360. Good recovery from their comically brutal fail reveal and launch Though.

I'd disagree, despite eating into their revenue to slash the price sales are still down and it's pretty much dead outside of the US. Here in the UK it's been selling as low as £240 when less than 18 months ago it launched at £420. Never mind that their market share has dropped which no business will be fine with having previously been well positioned in the last generation of their product.

Of course it's not horrendous and much of what MS are doing is what they need to turn things around but no investor would describe falls in market share and revenue and sales year on year as "fine".

I'm shocked, no really. :P

Anyhooey, they're ahead of the Nintendo console that launched a year earlier, yup, doing just fine and really have yet to hit their stride following an atrocious start with tons of bonehead mistakes but sure, if I were an investor, I would like it to do better. I've been saying since the start, Holiday 2016 is their breakout time if it's to happen at all.

Forbes doesn't see it as an issue, like they said. Most consoles are in the same position the Xbone is in at the moment at this point in there lifespans.

I would take Forbes word over anyone's, they know what they are talking about when it comes to business

You will not get the truth here TC. Read up on it in Barron's, Forbes, WSJ. Its doing what most consoles do at this point in their life cycles. The PS4 is doing way better, but as Forbes said that is an exception, not the rule. And Sony knows that first hand as well.

It's doing fine but obviously not living up to Microsoft's expectations at the beginning of the gen. Even the PS3 is considered a failure despite selling a ton. I expect the X1's lifetime sales to be a little over half of what the 360 sold.

Relative to competition, it's doing okay. Relative to every other console ever that isn't PS2 and Wii, it's destroying them.

It's in distant second place, just like the previous two Xbox consoles.

According to our resident Xbox fankids, that's something to be really proud of.

It's not doing poorly but it's not doing good either, especially compared to the 360's success.

At least they changed since the reveal debacle and lolkinect.

It's doing "fine". Which isn't particularly good (Playstation 4) nor is it bad (WiiU), at least in terms of sales. As a machine that gets interesting games? It's pretty weak just like the other 2, as both the PS4 and WiiU are lousy as well. The PS4 just happens to be the least lousy.

Reminds me of someone's signature from last year.

"With the first XBox, we knocked on the door.

With the XBox 360 we pushed the door open

With the third XBox, we are kicking the door down."

...and the door swings back immediately and knocks your bitch asses out.

My opinion is that it's doing great, just not spectacular. This is a good spot to be in, because it forces MS to step up their game.

Games are certainly selling well, just look at the amazon rankings now, Black OPs 3 on Xbox One has been number 1since yesterday, yet the PS4, who has nearly twice the install base, has its Black OPs 3 further down the rankings at 4....so how come ? I'm not good at analyzing sales, sometimes you need to look at the bigger picture, and MS for example kept supporting Surface even after a 1B$ write off, and now they are successful with it. So yeah the Xone currently is selling fine the way I see it. That's god enough for me, doesn't have to be number 1.

When I see people say its not doing as well as the 360 I don't think that's necessarily true. If this gen last as long as last gen I do believe the x1 would pass the 360 I just doubt it last as long. I do feel like X1 is on pace for maybe 90 million but the ps4 is probably on pace for 160+ if we went a full 8 years like last gen

We won't know until the holidays.

If in NA Xbox one matches or exceeds last Nov+Dec combined numbers it will still be ahead into 2016. MS will have games in the preseason this time, but if NPD (and even UK) remains flat or less than this year the first few months, NPD won't be able to make up for WW numbers. And say April may the 360 will be ahead.

It's hard to predict because I expect this holiday to be bigger and I think moving some games to the first couple months in the year may actually help them. if they keep any momentum from the holidays due to that, Xbox one will continue to outsell the 360. If not the Xbox One will fall.

As of March, the Xbox One is actually not outselling the 360. But the gaps aren't very big yet. Due to the 360's April and May, the Xbox one might start outselling the 360 again this month and may, especially if we don't have another 77k disaster like last may.

What's interesting is that the XBox one sold 2.4+ million in NA alone last holiday, Probably around 3.5 million WW or more. And a slight lead on the 360 in Jaunuary. When you add up all the numbers, the Holiday season is the only reason why the XBox one is still strongly far from the 360 and is also why it's not really probable the Xbox One will fall behind in 2015.

We don't have enough information for this. Sales wise, it's ahead of the 360 and this holiday season and the first few months of 2016 will determine if it falls behind.

When you take into the information of Sony and MS sold over 170 million+ PS3's and 360's and the mad crazy amount the Wii had sold as well

The PS4 is around 23+ million and X1 is around 14 million units ship and WiiU is sitting around the 14 million mark as well that's a total of 51 million consumers that have jumped into the current gen. Still leaving around 119 million plus consumers that purchased ps3's or 360's or both playing last gen systems.

Things aren't gonna get interesting until games like COD and madden release on next gen systems only or at least until the last gen versions of these games are seriously gimped!

There is a long way to go in the bigger picture

Don't throw shipped numbers when we have no info for those numbers, especially since all are wrong.

Wii U is at 9.2 million as of end of last year. Shipped.

How did the Wii U ship another 5 million consoles and where did they come from?

If it did that, we would have record being announced, and the Wii U would have an actual chance of passing Gamecube LTD.

No company especially one with such influence would be happy with losing money just to be essentially treading water after 2 generations.

I'm pretty sure investors at Microsoft see Xbox at this point as a real eyesore. E3 2015 will be pretty important for its long-term future.

@Captainqwark10: ok fine prove my point even more by lowering the estimated figures

It's still a Fact PS3 and 360 sold over 80 million systems each that's over 170 million console owners

Take the sales now whether exact or estimate and your still at or under 50 millions give or take with the combined sales of WiiU, PS4 and X1.

So there are still around 120 millions people out there that have last gen systems.

I'm even excluding Wii owners add another 100 million plus for them that takes you up to 220 millions last gen owners.

Current gen owners are the minority any way you slice it and until games are no longer being released on last gen systems you have no idea which systems are gonna go off like crazy.
