http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/03/27/after-the-layoffs-sony-is-now-working-on-hiring-again-insider-explains-what-happened/

Stig and his team spent almost 100 million dollars on a game that failed every QA test that took. The game sucked. They shitcanned the game and a lot of the people involved. They offered Stig a spot on barlog’s project – he didn’t want to go from game director to something lesser so he quit.

This makes sense, right? Shitty game, money wasted, people fired, head guy leaves out of ego? I mean that all makes sense.

100 Million my ass

You don't cancel a game that is in full production for no good reason. There must have been something substantial that drove Sony to pull the plug.

excuses? what happened to the rest they didn't want to take a lesser role? they been letting the top of each studio go with the exception of poly.

#7 Posted by kinectthedots (2766 posts) -

If there is one thing we can say, it's that Sony does know quality, with 3 exclusive GOTY titles in one generation their QA process can not be questioned.

Also Sony is one of the most lenient companies with it comes to accepting new Ideas and perspectives on games (look a Quantic Dream) so if they won't let a game come out, it must have really had some issues.

Everything makes sense now. I am sure some will try to re-set the fire to blaze but this makes much more sense.

It's not impossible if they had to restart the game every time for it to be to his liking he it's almost 25-50 mil each time so yea it isn't unlikely. Many games had high prices attached to it.

100 million in a failed project. God damn, I'd be furious were I a suit at Sony. How can anyone fuck up this bad?

#10 Posted by tonitorsi (8658 posts) -

Of course it did. Its the reason as to why a billion dollar company like Sony pulled out.

Waste of resources, time and money.

100m dollars wasted? Wow

According to the insider they restarted the project 3 different times. Ouch. It was suppose to be due out this year.

Some say he spent 100 million dollars just to emulate pong.. All we know is, he's called the Stig!

GoW3 sucked balls. The story was ridiculous and it played more like a tech demo than a proper game.

What else has he worked on?

#15 Edited by edwardecl (2239 posts) -

Wow if true I don't think his prospects at running any type of project where there is a level of trust is going to happen for him ever again. Wasting 100 Million is insane, I hope the rest of the team is able to salvage something from the work done to use in other projects at least.

#16 Posted by handssss (1899 posts) -

this is the SSM guy right? Was he working on the game with the Battlestar Galactica writers or is this a separate project?

Games get cancelled in various stages of production dude.

$100,000,000?! Wow!! That's an insane amount of money to waste on a failed project. They should have kicked his ass out ages ago then.

#21 Posted by CrashNBurn281 (590 posts) -

That is a whole lot of wasted money. If Sony did actually offer him a place on a different project, it is more than he deserved.

True. I'm surprised they even bothered to offer him a place on a different project. That's an insane amount of money to waste on garbage.

As a consumer I love it. They'd spent a bunch of cash, but it wasn't going to work out. Done, kill it.

#24 Edited by DarthRamms (1005 posts) -

Insider source and really 100 million dollars that's just unbelievable

#25 Posted by GrenadeLauncher (6256 posts) -

Told you they wouldn't have shitcanned a four year old project unless there were significant issues. Apologies inbound from the lems? Doubt it.

#26 Edited by XboxDone74 (2116 posts) -

I guess that's why they brought Cory back. Shame. I like Stig, but if the project was going nowhere, and a ton of dough had already been dumped into it, something had to be done.

Well.......he should have known how to write a proper story then. Instead he makes Kratos the biggest hypocrite ever by having feelings for Pandora just casually ignoring the millions of deaths of other little girls in his ultimately super-selfish quest for revenge against the Gods.

He was the director of God of War III, which did very well critically and commercially. Sometimes games just don't work out. If it couldn't pass QA, that's a failing on the part of the entire studio, not just him.

And this guy directed God of War 3, which is one of my favorite action adventure games ever.

Damn.

So now Sony's studios suck?????

So now GOW3 was horrendous????

So now Twitter douches rumors are fact???

So Sony Fan continues to be the clowns of SW.............

#33 Posted by kuu2 (8134 posts) -

Twitter Douche is just that!

"Driveclub is a great game, and the direction hasn’t changed since my departure. This has been confirmed by SONY in various press releases over recent days.

I have no problem in dealing with very large projects, as I’ve been working in the games industry for the last 19 years, and have worked on some very prestigious titles, so there is genuinely no truth to anything posted by Mr Dodds at all. My departure (and indeed the setup of my ‘indie’ operation, BigRedSwitch) is 100% driven by family necessity, not some professional failing on my part.

I left SONY on very good terms. There is no animosity there, and I was absolutely nothing to do with the recent redundancies – in fact, the news of those redundancies was probably linked on here before I knew about them.

The games industry is a tough place at the moment. My circumstances with my son mean that I’ve had to leave secure work in order to try to make my own way in the world. This may entail getting another job. With people who obviously know nothing about the situation blackening my reputation for the sake of internet ‘fame’, this could be made much more difficult. It’s nothing less than trolling.

I’ve contacted Mr. Dodd on his email address on his site. Due to the factual inaccuracy of his statements, I’ve informed him that he needs to remove the statements and apologise for the damage they have caused, as posting incorrect information and claiming it’s true is quite simply libel.

I’m sure you can all appreciate just how difficult things are for myself and my family at the moment. I’d genuinely appreciate it if you can take my statements as word from the origin, and realise that there has been no big cover-up when it comes to my departure from SONY/Evo.

Thanks, all.

______________________

Pete Dodd himself apologized for the faulty reporting, and while the correct report by Rodgers matches the vision that there’s no big disruption at Sony Computer Entertainment we apologize ourselves with our readers for relaying incorrect information on Rodgers’ departure."

I have talked to Col Rodgers personally and his side of the story is vastly different than what I posted yesterday on gaf.

I apologize. I shouldn’t have gone there. Office gossip isn’t news. Col is a good and talented guy who left on his own accord.

Ironic is this post....I'll let you think about why.

#40 Posted by DocSanchez (2600 posts) -

@whiskeystrike: You are in a spaceship capable of warp technology trying to get to Alpha Centauri before the opening of a supermarket, and racing Clarkson who is in a battered Ford Cortina....and he's going to win because he always does.

Can we get a hint or a feel for what the game was? I'd like to know what it was and why it failed so spectacularly when GOW III was great

Lol.

Anyways, I think all we knew was that it was the "space game" they were making. I'm sure concept art will leak one day.

Lol 'insider'

#45 Posted by f50p90 (3767 posts) -

You don't need to be an insider to know that if a game well into development is completely canned, and the entire team fired, the game probably wasn't very good
