In the era of 8/10's, is the GS rating system obsolete?

In the old days, the rating system made sense because there were all kinds of games. There were 2's and 3's. Lots of 6's. Nowadays, with GS's rating standard, most highly acclaimed games just get an 8.

9-10 are sacred numbers here and giving a highly acclaimed game any less than an 8 (unless its AC Unity bad) is too controversial.

8/10 is the perfect rating to give a game that you didn't go absolutely nuts over, but still was "objectively-speaking" great.

I've always like the 100 point scale. It was more fun. But of course people have to take these things so seriously.

Acclaimed games here don't just get 8s. GameSpot is actually diversifying its review scale too.

Also anyone with a lame one word drive by post, you are what's wrong with this forum.

How can GameSpot's review system is "obsolete" if fanboys continue to use it?

How can a random number tell you if a game is good or not. Best way is to play a game and judge for yourself. All numbers do is give fanboys something to argue over even if the difference is by one point.

Didn't Bayonetta 2 just score 10/10?

Talos Principle, Smash Bros. U, Tales From Borderlands Ep. 1, GTAV re-release, Dragon Age: Inquisition all just scored 9/10.

Sonic Boom scored 2/10.

WWE 2K15 scored 4/10.

And this is just back to the end of October. What are you on about here?

Numbered reviews in general are obsolete. Only reason they still exist is because people are too stupid to read.

Ratings, in the form of opinionated numbers, have always been self-serving and nothing more. One person's final judgement in the form of a simple number has never actually set a unified standard for any given game's quality.

We've seen it argued before that the whole rating system across the whole video game industry is obsolete or just a piss-poor way of showing how good a game is because reviewers only used the upper half of a ten-point scale for the longest time. I don't think Gamespot is in a much different place than other sites.

So I'd argue it's not that the rating system is obsolete, it's always been reviewers and gamers not having an understanding of the entire review scale.

Nah its a ok system. As far as systems go. Most of the issue would lie with the reviewer who has to interpret how the system would work.

What? RE HD and Gat out of Hell just a 7. Tons of games got 6, 7, 8 and 9s.

It's just the really, really shitty ones that get 5, 4 or lower.

What would your reaction be if Uncharted 4 got 10/10? Would game scores be obsolete then?

Also, even games that get 9s and 10s can still be subject to controversy. I don't agree but many people who play GTA 4 come on here to harp about how a dated game they just played was overrated. Hell, MGS4 got a 10/10 and I think it's the premiere case of mass psychological phenomena of everybody agreeing a shit sandwich is the creme de la creme, like watching North Koreans praise Kim Jong-Un for being so godly.

There's never been a way to tell if game scores or reviews will lead you to make the best choice as a gaming consumer. Still, take what they have to say into consideration, make an informed judgement is the more important thing for yourself as a consumer. Weigh every bit of info you have. Watch gameplay videos on YouTube. Take note of the substance of a reviews and not just the scores.

Eh.....they shouldn't be taken as gospel but they can give you an idea at least. That said.....review content can be helpful though.

They should just do thumbs up or down and have 10 people give their opinions. That would be the out-of-10 score.

Not really. They used to have .1 increments, then .5 and now it's whole numbers. It doesn't matter in the big scheme of things. A .5 score isn't going to sway me either way.

Reviewers shoud stick with actual reviews and abolish numbered scores altogether. Stick with either a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

READ THE REVIEWS. I mean seriously. Read them. This is why I love RPS reviews. NO BS scores. Just pure opinion.
