In Defense of Donkey Kong

I'm a Sony fanboy, but I gotta defend Donkey Kong for a second. After seeing Destiny, Titanfall, Witcher 3, and scores of other ultra-violent hyper-masculine realism game trailers (after a 7-year gen full of them), I was left underwhelmed.

I'm not saying Donkey Kong is some kind of godsend, but I'm much more interested in his adventures rather than just another run-of-the-mill sword or gun game.

Right now Tropical Freeze is far from the top of my list, but games like MGS5 (which would've gone bananas over in 2010, lets say) really just don't interest me anymore.

The new Donkey Kong looks so good. But that's no surprise since it's Retro Studios.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze looks great.

Although I really didn't like that team attack move they showed at VGX, I have faith in Retro Studios and I consider their DKCR to be one of the two best games of the past generation and a platforming masterpiece. I hope they deliver with this new game in the end.

Yep and since it's not a new IP, or Metroid (Prime 4 or whatever), Retro are on quite a few s*** lists.

I really can't get over the motion controls in that game, they're just out of place and bad. That and the music is either dull or a bit metroidish, same with the enemy design. I can see the good in it though.

Tropical freeze looks a hundred times better.

And anyone expecting Metroid Prime 4 is an idiot. Hope, maybe. Expecting...idiot. The series is over, Retro have moved on.

I do wish Nintendo would give the side scrollers a rest though. A 3D WORLD style kong game would be insane.

Metroid is fine. Still waiting on Metroid V, in fact. But Metroid Prime is done.

I don't think people want another metroid Prime. I certainly don't, but i would love another Metroid game. No like other M though, maybe a 3DS one like the older ones ?

Well, as someone who'd like a new Metroid game myself, it seems Nintendo's not too sure about that (as much as Reggie and Miyamoto love to tease it, but as Nintendo has proven time and time again with other franchises, it means nothing), considering the last game sold so bad and has been poorly received by fans (you know, like Sonic fans and this game).

How doesn't it make sense? People hated Halo 4 (wasn't Halo 3 supposed to end it originally with the "finish the fight" slogan they had?) and I'm certain a Metroid Prime 4 will receive similar treatment after Prime 3 (which is supposed to end that part of the Metroid series). I know I'll be disappointed with Retro if they announce a new Metroid, because I don't want them to do nothing but that and know they have potential to spread their influence around (like Rare when they were with Nintendo since they worked on more than just Donkey Kong) and their resurrection of Donkey Kong proved that.

I'm a fan of Donkey Kong. It's always been a game that you can just relax and have fun with. I'm looking forward to it. It's isnt in my top 5 but pending reviews, probably going to pick it up.

Funny statement. Pick two Zelda games at random and two God of War games at random. There will be more to distinguish between the two Zelda games than the God of War games.

I'd rather play Destiny, Titanfall, and Witcher 3 over any Donkey Kong game. Metroid is another story, but Nintendon't gonna Nintendon't.

DKCR is a great game, Tropical Freeze is pretty much undoubtedly going to be a great one as well.

That's really awesome you love donkey kong. I love all of nintendos awesome franchise sequels!. They are so good that's all Nintendo does is make awesome sequel after sequel after sequel! When they don't do sequels they make franchise spinoffs and they are amazing! And then they make kick ass franchise remakes and re-releases also!

**** all the other companies with their variety and original ideas! Nintendos line of nothing but franchises is so awesome they don't need anything else! THey don't need to come up with new games, they haven't for the past 3 decades.

I always sort of chuckled at those complaining about it at E3. Retro arguably made the best 2D platformer that nintendo has released in quite sometime. But people are upset they are making a sequel to it?

Is it just this disdain people have for retail 2D platformers?

Retro is to talented to do 2D games they say but they want this talented studio to just continually pump out more of prime series? rather than exlpore different genres like they have been?

It is just kind of silly if you ask me.

From what I got out of it (and the YMMV page on TVTropes says the same thing), people hate it because Retro isn't making a new Metroid or a new IP. And there's also the usual "rehash" comments.
